This document discusses toxic leadership. Toxic leadership occurs when a leader pursues goals that are ultimately against followers' self-interests in a way that has adverse effects on subordinates and mission performance. Toxic leadership emerges when destructive leaders who possess traits like charisma, a need for power, and narcissism gain support from susceptible followers in an environment conducive to toxic leadership, such as times of instability or perceived threats. The conditions for toxic leadership can be measured based on a leader's personality and values.
