Growth Mindset
2017 Convene Canada
Veronica Carroll MBA CFRE
What will we cover?
Why does leadership matter?
Private sector studies…
Things that influence leadership
My own story & past leadership presentations
What’s the urgency for leadership
Growth vs. fixed mindset
How to develop your own growth mindset
Wrap up
Why does leadership matter?
Deloitte study results
In 2011/12 Deloitte studied investment analysts
perception of the relationship between corporate
leadership and performance
Interviewed 445 analysts and found that effective
senior leadership can add 15% to a company’s value
This is about the perception of good leadership
Forbes study results
CEO Genome Project
Results
10 year study was to identify the specific attributes that
differentiate high-performing CEOs
Looked through 17,000 assessments of C-suite executives
They discovered that successful CEOs tend to demonstrate
four behaviours critical to their success:
Decisiveness
The ability to engage stakeholders
Adaptability
Reliability
In summary - Research findings
The perception of good leadership adds value to an
organization
Good leaders add financial value to the bottom line
of an organization and great leaders add even more
value to the bottom line
Leaders who focus and develop their skills of
decisiveness, stakeholder engagement, adaptability
and reliability increase their chances of not only
succeeding in their role but in becoming a high
performer
Things to consider
My own story…
• Leadership – A personal interest
• 30 years in social impact sector
• Worked at 9 non-profits – global, national,
provincial and community based
• 12 transitions into new roles
• 6 organizational leadership roles
A Leadership Journey
Good leadership is essential
Organization wide impact
It makes good business sense
Leadership succession
Leaders are wanting other ways to structure work
Leadership tenure/leadership burnout
The challenge to attract and retain talent
And Time is ticking…
Exercise
Turn to the person next to you
and talk about the following:
• A time when you either
practiced good
leadership or you saw
someone else do so
• share the one or two
key elements that
enabled that to happen
Growth vs. Fixed
What’s your mindset?
Your intelligence is something very basic about you that
you can’t change very much.
You can learn new things, but you can’t really change how
intelligent you are.
No matter how much intelligence you have, you can
always change it quite a bit.
You can always substantially change how intelligent you
are.
*“Mindset. The New Psychology of Success.” Carol S. Dweck, Ph. D.
What is a growth
mindset?
What is a fixed mindset?
How do you challenge a fixed
mindset?
How do you encourage a growth
mindset?
Ask yourself these questions to
encourage a growth mindset:
What are the opportunities for learning and growth
today? For myself? For the people around me?
As you think of opportunities, form a plan and ask:
When, where and how will I embark on my plan?
And when you succeed, don’t forget to ask yourself:
What do I have to do to maintain and continue the
growth?
