This public lecture outlines my research into new (green) materials that are environmentally sensitive and have some of the properties of living systems. The development of these materials provokes a re-consideration of our understanding of sustainable architectural practice and expands the available design portfolio beyond alternative energy sources, efficiency and recycling in order to retool architects for the ambitious 'zero carbon' city targets set by the Brussels 2030 Energy Comission

PICNIC Organic Design, Living Architecture
Living Architecture is a new model of sustainable architecture that directly connects the built environment to nature. It views architecture as part of the biosphere, integrated through a common chemical language called metabolism. This allows living systems to be connected to their environment. Metabolic materials are capable of metabolism and can be considered a form of living technology. They possess some properties of living systems and can grow, move, and reproduce. For practical purposes in architecture, these materials need to be robust, safe, inexpensive, and ubiquitous. Innovation can occur by designing with existing metabolic systems and materials or inventing new low-tech chemical computers like programmable protocell technology.

A growing amount of architectural discourse explores analogies between ecosystems and living organisms, and architectural design that increases the capacity for regeneration. This is referred to here as bio-inspired design. This paper examines the relationship between biophilic and biomimetic approaches to architectural design as two aspects of bio-inspired design.
The theory that bio-inspired design is inherently linked in the creation of regenerative architecture, able to increase capacity for self repair in both living ecosystems and the human psyche is examined. Intersections, or mutualisms between design to improve the wellbeing of ecosystems and design to improve human wellbeing, such as biomimicry and biophilia, are analysed and may illustrate the key aspects of bio-inspired design that could contribute to regenerative design. Biomimicry, where flora, fauna or entire ecosystems are emulated as a basis for design, has attracted considerable interest in the fields of architectural design and engineering as an innovative new design approach and importantly as a potential way to shift the built environment to a more sustainable paradigm. The practical application of biomimicry as a design methodology, particularly in the built environment, remains elusive however. This paper seeks to contextualise the various approaches to biomimicry and provides an inte-grated set of principles that could form the basis for an ecosystem based design theory. This would enable practitioners to reach beyond sustainability to a regenerative design practice where the built environment becomes a vital component in the integration with and regeneration of natural ecosystems as the wider human habitat.

The recent winners of the Autodesk-sponsored Biomimicry Student Design Challenge come from the Art Institute of Isfahan in Iran. The team set out to use biomimicry-inspired design to reduce energy use in a building designed for Iran’s harsh desert climate. Biomimicry, where flora, fauna or entire ecosystems are emulated as a basis for design, is a growing area of research in the fields of architecture and engineering. This is due to both the fact that it is an inspirational source of possible new innovation and because of the potential it offers as a way to create a more sustainable and even regenerative built environment. The widespread and practical application of biomimicry as a design method remains however largely unrealised. A growing body of international research identifies various obstacles to the employment of biomimicry as an architectural design method. One barrier of particular note is the lack of a clear definition of the various approaches to biomimicry that designers can initially employ.
Through a comparative literature review, and an examination of existing biomimetic technologies, this paper elaborates on distinct approaches to biomimetic design that have evolved. A framework for understanding the various forms of biomimicry has been developed, and is used to discuss the distinct advantages and disadvantages inherent in each as a design methodology. It is shown that these varied approaches may lead to different outcomes in terms of overall sustainability or regenerative potential.

Abalone shells are 200% stronger than ceramics due to their layered structure of proteins and calcium carbonate, which provides both strength and flexibility. This natural material shows promise for developing new strong and durable materials through ambient manufacturing processes without high temperatures, as required for traditional ceramics. Over time, biomimicry has increased innovation from fields like transportation to new materials and could help address issues like energy production through artificial photosynthesis.

THE CONCEPT OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Major concerns are population growth straining resources, pollution from vehicles and industry, and inadequate infrastructure like transportation and roads. To achieve sustainable development, initiatives are needed like controlling population growth, public awareness campaigns, planned infrastructure expansion, moving industries outside the city, improved waste management, and increasing green spaces and healthcare access. Strict laws, welfare programs, and advanced technology adoption can also help address challenges and form a sustainable city.

the roof over the eastern stand makes the sports complex

A one day symposium on zero/low carbon sustainable homes took place at The University of Nottingham on the 24th October, 2012. The event offered professionals within the construction industry a unique opportunity to gain added and significant insight into the innovations, policies and legislation which are driving the construction of zero/low carbon energy efficient homes both here in the UK and elsewhere in Europe. It explored solutions to sustainability issues “beyond” the zero carbon agenda. BZCH followed on from the successful ‘Towards Zero Carbon Housing’ symposium the University hosted in 2007. This event is part of the Europe Wide Ten Act10n project which is supported by the European Commission Intelligent Energy Europe.
Bangladesh National Cricket Stadium Redevelopment
The Bangladesh Cricket Board hired ISFM to redevelop an existing 50,000 seat athletic center into a larger international cricket stadium and headquarters. ISFM's work included adding 5,000 seats, sponsor and corporate seating, media and hospitality facilities, and reducing the field size to improve sightlines while bringing spectators closer. The completed stadium in Dhaka has hosted international cricket matches and includes facilities like a cricket academy and offices to serve as the hub for Bangladeshi cricket.

Currently, there is a growing demand for standardization and interoperability in energy data and modeling. Open source standards and specifications within the energy sector can also alleviate challenges associated with data fragmentation, transparency, and accessibility. At the same time, it is crucial to consider privacy and security concerns throughout the development of open source platforms.
This webinar will delve into the motivations behind establishing LF Energy’s Carbon Data Specification Consortium. It will provide an overview of the draft specifications and the ongoing progress made by the respective working groups.
Three primary specifications will be discussed:
-Discovery and client registration, emphasizing transparent processes and secure and private access
-Customer data, centering around customer tariffs, bills, energy usage, and full consumption disclosure
-Power systems data, focusing on grid data, inclusive of transmission and distribution networks, generation, intergrid power flows, and market settlement data

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

Attributes & automation parameters enable the automation author to pass data values from one automation component to the next.
