The Internet is constantly evolving. As the speed, flexibility and complexity of connections increase exponentially, the Web is increasingly beginning to resemble a biological analog; the human brain. But what exactly is it that’s makes us, or the Web, smart?
In the brain, neurologists now believe that it is the density and flexibility of the connections between neurons, not simply neurons themselves, which are at the root of intelligence. These connections are called Synapses.
Even if the total number of brain cells, or neurons, begins to diminish in early adulthood, our ability to generate new connections between neurons and between different parts of the brain – what neurologist call “plasticity” - persists throughout life. What's more, the brain seems to be like any other muscle in that plasticity can be increased with exercise.
It is at the synapse, the "gap" between one neuron and another, where neural connections are consummated to create pathways that, when used, are reinforced with additional connections and, when unused, are "pruned" to make way for new, more useful pathways. It is these incredible chemical bridges that define the patterns of communication that, at any given time, define our cognitive capacity.
We believe that this evolving view of neural science provides an increasingly apt metaphor for what we call the "Synaptic Web" in that the connections between objects are more important than the objects themselves. The question is; how are these connections changing to create new experiences? In other words, there is an opportunity to stop looking at the nodes and start looking at the space between them.
The exploding variety, speed and flexibility of electronic connections - those between people, data sets, applications, the real world and the online world, gestures and meaning and content and communication – is at the root of what some have called an evolving “collective intelligence.” Thus, the Synaptic Web is about the evolution of the Internet from document delivery platform, to a platform for communication ("2.0") and now towards something much more profound: a dynamic web of adaptive "organic" and implicit connections whereby real-time information flows give structure and meaning to previously unconnected sets of data. The Strands Community Collage (CoCollage) is designed to cultivate community in a café, a quintessential "third place", by bringing the richness of online social software into a physical community space. The system shows photos and quotes uploaded to a web site by café patrons and staff on a large computer display in the café, providing a new channel for awareness, interactions and relationships among people there. We describe the CoCollage system and report on insights and experiences resulting from a 2-month deployment of the system, focusing on the impact the system has had on the sense of community within the café.

Creation of visualizations based on Linked DataAlvaro Graves
A common task with any relatively large amount of data is to create visual representations that help users to make sense of such data and observe trends that otherwise would be hard for them to appreciate. The creation of these visual- izations usually requires some knowledge in a programming language, making it difficult for non-technical savvy users to create visualizations. In this paper we present Visualbox, a system that makes it easier for non-programmers to create web visualizations based on Linked Data. These visualiza- tions can be accessed by any modern web browser and can be easily embedded in web pages and blogs. We describe how people can create visualizations using Visualbox and we show examples of work done by real users. Finally we present a study that shows that Visualbox makes it easier for users to create Linked Data-based visualizations.
In this talk I will show Visualbox, a "visualization server" based on LODSPeaKr that can make easy for non javascript experts to create simple but meaningful visualizations.

My talk is called "New and Emerging Forms of Data: Past, Present, and Future” and I will be giving a perspective from my role as one of the ESRC Strategic Advisers for Data Resources, in which I was responsible for new and emerging forms of data and realtime analytics. The talk also includes some of the current work in the Oxford e-Research Centre on Social Machines (the SOCIAM project) and an introduction to the PETRAS Internet of Things project.
The talk raises a number of important issues looking ahead, including massive scale of data that is already being supplied by Internet of Things, the implications of automation in our research, reproducibility and confidence in research results. I will also ask, how can the new forms of data and new research methods enable social scientists to work in new ways, and can we move on from the dependence on the traditional investment in longitudinal studies?
Objectives: 1. Gain an understanding of key trends in ICT innovation which are influencing/disrupting crisis informatics. 2. Be able to trace these trends through discussions later this semester, and understand their influence and potential. 3. Introduce visualization lab
On September 19, 2011, ITIF Senior Analyst Daniel Castro spoke on a panel at the Global IP Academy’s “Copyright in the Digital Age” program sponsored by the United States Copyright Office and the Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). His panel was entitled “Copyright Technology 101” and he discussed the various controls that can be used to protect intellectual property in different parts of the Internet ecosystem. The program was held at the USPTO in Alexandria, Virginia and included approximately 50 foreign government officials working on copyright issues.

Digital Identity is fundamental to collaboration in bioinformatics research and development because it enables attribution, contribution, publication to be recorded and quantified.
However, current models of identity are often obsolete and have problems capturing both small contributions "microattribution" and large contributions "mega-attribution" in Science. Without adequate identity mechanisms, the incentive for collaboration can be reduced, and the utility of collaborative social tools hindered.
Using examples of metabolic pathway analysis with the taverna workbench and myexperiment.org, this talk will illustrate problems and solutions to identifying scientists accurately and effectively in collaborative bioinformatics networks on the Web.

Part 1: Information networking as technology: tools, uses, and socio-technical interactions
Information overload! The phrase alone is enough to strike terror into the hardiest of managers; it presages the breakdown of society as we know it and the failure of management to cope with change. The media constantly dissect the forthcoming collapse brought on by TMI ("Too Much Information"), even as they themselves pile up larger and larger dossiers on the subject, and we are frequently informed that it is our own damn fault that we are drowning in data, since we simply can't discriminate between the important stuff and everything else. Hence, the info-tsunami warning signs posted all along what we once so naively called the "information superhighway".
Of course, this is arrant nonsense -- human beings have been suffering from information overload in varying forms since about the time we hit the ground and found ourselves simultaneously running after the antelope and away from the lion. There's no question that the human mind has a limited capacity to process information, but after several million years we've gotten pretty good at figuring out how to handle a lot. The two basic tricks turn out to be distinguishing between short-term and long-term information storage, and "chunking" -- putting things in a limited number of baskets. This isn't primarily a course in the psychology of memory -- it's about information tools and systems -- but in fact the same things that make our information tools and systems work are the same things that have kept us near the antelopes and away from the lions (mostly) for the last million years or so. So we're beginning this course by thinking about information tools, what makes them like and unlike other kinds of tools, how the concept of a socio-technical system (in which social and behavioral functions shape results as much as does the technology itself) helps make sense of what we're facing, and why the technology just might win after all.
Let's start with a little historical review. Amy Blair has recently done a very intriguing summary of just why information overload isn't something that we, or still less our kids, dreamed up -- people have been drowning in data for ages regardless of the tools at their disposal:

We thought we had it all nailed down when the information theorists came up with their typology distinguishing between "data" (raw stuff), "information" (cooked stuff), and "knowledge" (cooked stuff that we've eaten). Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students.
