Tornadoes are violent whirling funnels made from wind that usually travel over land and can cause significant damage when they touch down. They form when hot and cold air collide, with the cold air moving under the hot air, causing an updraft that can spin into a tornado if rotating too quickly. The most dangerous tornado in recorded history occurred in the U.S. in the 1990s. Thunderstorms are a common cause of tornadoes, developing in warm, moist air masses, with factors like drylines and air flowing upslope near mountains also contributing conditions for tornado formation in some storms.
