Few leaders embody the spirit of curiosity and innovation
as distinctly as Kristofer Skantze, the visionary Chief
Executive Officer of Xer Technologies. His journey into
the world of groundbreaking technology began during his
tenure as the Chief Commercial Officer at Rex International
Holding, where he spearheaded the evaluation of countless
technologies and business prospects for potential
investments.
In late 2020, a game-changing opportunity emerged on his
radar: a startup dedicated to hybrid electric drone
development. This venture aligned seamlessly with Rex's
vision of diversification, ticking all the boxes: innovative
technology, a rapidly expanding market, and the potential
for a substantial stake in the company. The question then
became: how could this promising idea transform into a
commercially viable product?
Stepping into uncharted territory, Skantze and his
colleagues took on the challenge of thoroughly examining
the startup, assessing its potential impact, and presenting
their findings to the Rex board. Little did he know that this
venture would mark a significant shift in his professional
trajectory. Entrusted with a new role as the CEO of the
startup, his mission was clear: to transform a cutting-edge

Could you please elaborate on Xer Technologies and its
inception story?
Xer emerged from a Swedish surveillance company with a
focus on monitoring rail yards using drones, successfully
apprehending over 500 individuals, and collaborating with
law enforcement. However, after years of night flights, it
became clear that battery-powered drones were ill-suited
for the task due to their limited flight time and rapidly
diminishing charge capacity. Recognizing the need for
innovation, the surveillance company embarked on a
journey to explore hybrid systems.
Despite a thorough assessment, it became apparent that
there was no existing hybrid electric multicopter drone on
the market that met the company's requirements. This
realization led to a pivotal decision—to pioneer the
development of the first hybrid electric multicopter drone
prototype.
Over the course of approximately four years, Xer engaged
in extensive testing of various market-available systems.
Early on, it became evident that existing hybrid electric

systems were inadequate for the specific demands of a
multicopter. Undeterred, the company made the strategic
choice to develop its own system, leveraging a combination
of standard and bespoke components to create a solution
tailored to the unique challenges of long-endurance flight
missions.
You've worked in various roles, from CEO to Chief
Commercial Officer and more. How have these diverse
positions influenced your perspective on business
development and innovation management?
Innovation is an intricate process marked by unique
dynamics, encompassing elements such as risk-taking, a
foundation of trust in the team, and a discerning market
perspective. When these components are effectively
addressed, the specific industry in which you aim to
establish a business becomes less pivotal. Despite the
diverse nature of industries, businesses share surprisingly
similar mechanics and challenges, allowing for a unified
approach to business development, staffing, and financing.
Having navigated through four distinct managerial careers,
I've consistently encountered a common thread to success:
management possessing both a technical vision and a
steadfast commitment to long-term business development
while remaining highly agile and fast-acting. This
dichotomy underscores the universal principles that govern
successful enterprises, transcending industry boundaries.
The linchpin to thriving in the unique realm of innovation
and business development also lies in the assurance of
stability and trust extended by company owners. This
foundational support empowers individuals to act in a
manner that aligns with the distinctive demands of fostering
innovation.
Living and working on three continents and in four
countries is quite unique. How has this global
experience impacted your approach to multinational
distribution setups and strategic liaisons?
While it may be tempting to prioritize the home market due
to reasons such as support, reduced travel costs, and
familiar language and culture, crafting an optimal sales
strategy involves a sober look at the global market.
Overemphasizing the home market often incurs a
significant opportunity cost, particularly when neglecting
the potential advantages of tapping into larger markets early
on. In essence, the key principle is to seek out funds and
customers where they are readily available, rather than
fixating on desired locations.
Having diverse experiences in various countries and
cultures undoubtedly enriches personal development.
However, it's essential to recognize that each business
venture represents a distinct journey with new stakeholders
and challenges, therefore offering limited leverage from
having lived in the country.
Nevertheless, the fundamental shift occurs in gaining a
broader perspective on markets, financing, and
opportunities after living and operating in different
countries. The apprehension of venturing into new
territories diminishes, allowing for a more focused
approach to core tasks such as customer acquisition,
network building, and understanding local market
dynamics. This shift in perspective enables a more strategic
and effective approach to business operations beyond the
confines of a singular, familiar market.
With expertise in business strategy and equity financing,
can you share a specific example of a successful strategy
implementation or a notable equity financing
achievement in your career?
Follow the path of investment, seizing opportunities as they
arise, as securing funding is often a crucial necessity.

During my involvement in the listing of Rex International
Holding in Singapore in 2013, we successfully raised close
to 200 million USD, including additional equity funding
events. Originally not planning to list in Singapore, the
decision was influenced by the sluggish and challenging
markets in Europe. At the time, the Singapore equity market
demonstrated enthusiasm for embracing new technology
companies, allowing us to leverage this favorable
environment. Local contacts with valuable insights into the
financial market further facilitated our successful listing.
In a similar vein, my prior experience as a manager with a
Swiss chemical company showcased the power of
leveraging external events. In response to the Gulf of
Mexico oil leakage, we innovatively developed a product to
protect beaches. This not only addressed a pressing
environmental concern but also garnered widespread
attention across Europe. The heightened visibility, in turn,
played a pivotal role in securing significant funding for the
company. The lesson here is clear: strategic leveraging of
market conditions and impactful events can be instrumental
in accessing essential financial support for your ventures.
As an inventor with 10 granted patents, how do you
balance your technical expertise with your roles in
marketing and sales management?
Expertise in patent design necessitates an in-depth
understanding of the field. During my tenure as an engineer
and project manager, I cultivated a profound technical
focus, leveraging my degree in engineering physics to
rapidly grasp the broader technical context and pose
pertinent questions. This educational foundation has proven
invaluable from a methodical point of view in discerning,
for example, what Xer should develop internally and,
conversely, which technologies to insource that are already
mature and more cost-effective than in-house development.
Furthermore, drawing upon my two decades of experience
in business development, sales, and marketing has equipped
me with a customer-centric mindset. This background
proves crucial in shaping product strategy decisions,
allowing me to identify critical needs, desired features, and
elements that can be replicated for a broader appeal. This
dual proficiency prevents the company from getting
entangled in pursuing market opportunities that may not
align with its core objectives, underscoring the significance
of a comprehensive skill set in navigating the intricate
landscape of technical development and business strategy.
