Making a difference in the world is not a
piece of cake; it requires curiosity, goals,
passion, and, of course, hard work.
Reflecting on the past, we can imagine the hardships
our ancestors endured without the convenience of
telephones, the luxury of electricity, or the availability
of sanitary napkins for women. It is indeed a
distressing thought.
However, in the twenty-first century, we have access
to nearly everything, including the ability to connect
with someone living thousands of kilometers away on
a different continent, allowing us to see them,
converse with them, and share laughter. It is definitely
a privilege to be born in this era, but when we
consider the origins of these developments, it becomes
evident that they were formed from someone's dream,
notion, drive to solve a problem, or passion. And
why? To make a difference!
The dreams, passions, desires to solve problems, and
ideas of individuals are now making a significant
impact, and our latest edition of The CIO World,
"Leading the Way: 10 South African Business Leaders
Making a Difference," strives to spotlight these
amazing individuals who are changing the world.
They are not only achieving their personal goals, but
they are also favorably influencing society.
7. As we delve into the biographies and narratives of
these exceptional leaders, it becomes evident that they
are not just shaping the future of their respective
businesses but also contributing to the overall
socioeconomic development of South Africa. Their
unrelenting commitment to innovation, ethical
business practices, and community engagement serves
as an inspiration to us all.
These leaders are shining examples of what can be
accomplished when one's goals and passions are
channeled towards creating a brighter and more
promising future for everyone. In a world where
effecting change may seem like an insurmountable
task, they show us that it is possible.

10. Life is a magnificent adventure, and its beauty lies in
the unpredictable moments that shape our destinies.
Just like a winding river, our journey is filled with
unexpected twists and turns that lead us to places we never
imagined. These surprises are the essence of life, making it
a thrilling and fulfilling ride.
For Eswee, the world of aviation chose him, and his career
took a turn toward the skies. With a passion for adventure
and a deep-rooted fascination for flight, his aviation journey
has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Eswee Vorster, the Chief Information Officer (CIO) of
FlySafair, whose serendipitous journey from e-commerce
to aviation technology has transformed the airline’s digital
landscape and enriched the customer experience.
Eswee’s career path took a fascinating turn towards aviation
when FlySafair recognised his exceptional e-commerce and
product development expertise. Before joining the airline,
he had explored various industries, from ERP and
telecommunications to e-commerce, which, in the early
2000s was still in its infancy. It was during this time that he
discovered his passion for technology and innovation,
particularly in the realm of product development and e-
commerce.
In 2015, FlySafair sought Eswee’s talents to enhance their
e-commerce platforms and create a robust website that
would set the stage for the airline’s growth. As it was still in
its early stages, Eswee found an ideal environment to work
his magic and make a lasting impact. His journey with the
airline began with a focus on building its digital presence,
and over the past nine years, his role has evolved, leading
him to his current position as the innovative CIO of
FlySafair.
Throughout his career, Eswee’s affinity for technology and
innovation has been the driving force behind his success.
His expertise has played a pivotal role in transforming
FlySafair’s digital landscape, curating a seamless and
enjoyable customer experience. By leveraging cutting-edge
technologies, he has helped to position the airline as a
leading player in the aviation industry, setting new
standards for innovation and customer engagement.
Let us delve deeper into his magnificent journey!
FlySafair’s Journey: Redefining Aviation Excellence
FlySafair embarked on its journey in October 2014, like any
small start-up, with a focus on laying a strong foundation.
Although the airline has experienced tremendous growth
since its inception, its core principles remain unwavering.
Eswee and the team emphasise data availability as a crucial
element in building the airline, using it as a guide to ensure
they make informed decisions.
From the very beginning, FlySafair distinguished itself
through its focus on on-time performance and hassle-free
customer service, principles that have remained central to
the airline’s ethos. Eswee attributes the disciplined
approach instilled early on as a significant factor in
achieving this level of consistency over the years. The
company’s dedication to innovation has also been apparent
from day one, pushing the boundaries and redefining the
norms of general airline operations.
Beyond its focus on excellence and innovation, FlySafair
has cultivated a vibrant and dynamic work environment.
The team consists of young, intelligent, and energetic
individuals who have been instrumental in building the
organisation and fostering its growth. A shared sense of
responsibility and a willingness to roll up their sleeves have
been key components to the team’s ethos, which has
endured even as FlySafair has expanded.
Pioneering Consumer Airline Business with
Technological Integration
FlySafair, a division of the esteemed Safair, has undergone
a strategic shift towards focusing on its consumer airline
business. While Safair has a rich history primarily centred
around cargo and leasing, FlySafair has emerged as a
vibrant force in the consumer airline market. Since its
inception, the brand has experienced remarkable growth,
even in the face of challenging circumstances.
Leading the Way: 10 South African Business Leaders Making a Difference
11. One of the key factors contributing to FlySafair’s success is
its low-cost model, which has resonated with customers
seeking affordable and efficient air travel. Additionally, the
airline places a strong emphasis on integrating technology
into its offerings to enhance the customer experience. By
leveraging technology, FlySafair ensures that its passengers
have access to seamless and user-friendly services, setting it
apart in the competitive aviation landscape.
Bridging Gaps and Spreading the Love for Flying
With a legacy dating back to 1965, Safair has long been a
prominent player in the cargo and leasing sector. The
wealth of knowledge and expertise held by the Safair team
played a pivotal role in propelling FlySafair to success.
Over the past nine years the low-cost passenger part of the
business has all but eclipsed the Safair business of
yesteryear.
What sets it apart is the passion for flying that the brand has
infused into the aviation space, in addition to its pioneering
low-cost model, which is still relatively new and
misunderstood in South Africa. Being the first to introduce
this customisable ticket concept to the South African
market, FlySafair has made air travel more accessible and
affordable for a new audience.
The airline’s dedication to achieving accessibility and
affordability has been realised through initiatives like its
renowned birthday sales, which have garnered nationwide
attention. These efforts have touched the lives of customers
who had never experienced flying before, now excited to
share in FlySafair’s love for aviation.
Moreover, FlySafair has risen to the challenge presented by
the Covid pandemic, endeavouring to close the market gap
left by industry closures. By increasing flight frequencies
and expanding destinations, the airline has made significant
strides in making air travel more feasible and convenient
for travellers, even extending its reach to neighbouring
countries.
Delivering Excellence to Customers
As the CIO at FlySafair, Eswee oversees two critical
components that are instrumental in driving the airline’s
success.
Cover
12. The IT team focuses on internal operations, managing
essential IT services such as network infrastructure, hosting,
and desktop support. They ensure the smooth running of the
business’s internal systems, allowing the organisation to
function efficiently.
On the other hand, the Innovation team holds a significant
emphasis within the company. This team is responsible for
every touchpoint where systems, applications, or processes
are linked to the airline. From ticket booking to boarding
systems at airports, technical maintenance systems, flight
operations, and pilot-facing applications—the Innovation
team plays a crucial role in managing and optimising these
processes. Moreover, they analyse and leverage data to
inform major business decisions, influencing the airline’s
strategic direction.
Eswee and his team’s diverse portfolio includes improving
internal processes and systems, aiming for enhanced
organisational efficiency. Their focus extends to designing
technology and systems that cater to both internal and
external customers, ensuring the best possible experience
for passengers and internal stakeholders alike.
Safety and Simplicity
At FlySafair, safety is paramount, and it governs every
decision made within the airline. Adhering to the rules set
out by the Civil Aviation Authority ensures that safety
standards are consistently met, both for customers and
within the organisation. Safety is an element that is never
compromised, reflecting the airline’s unwavering
commitment to the well-being of all stakeholders.
FlySafair distinguishes itself in Africa through its emphasis
on simplicity. With a clear focus on five key
pillars—managing costs, customer satisfaction, hassle-free
travel, on-time performance, and prioritising its
people—every decision aligns with at least one of these
pillars. This disciplined approach ensures that the airline
stays true to its mission and values while maintaining a
customer-centric approach.
Regarding technology, FlySafair embraces disruptive
innovation. This means that every technological initiative is
designed to delight customers and surprise competitors,
keeping the airline one step ahead in the industry. The speed
and urgency of technology delivery are critical elements of
FlySafair’s success, allowing the company to seize exciting
opportunities and stay agile in a rapidly evolving market.
He further states, “Beyond that, our strategy is quite clear,
no frills, no fuss, just great products which we always look
to improve on. Our focus on future technology is of equal
importance; with the current buzz around AI and Machine
learning, we are keen to see how we can explore those
principles to even further better the airline. My goal is to be
a world-class technology company that just happens to fly!”
Technological Innovations Elevating FlySafair’s Success
FlySafair has garnered numerous awards, and from a
technological perspective, one of its most significant recent
achievements is the successful implementation of the
WhatsApp feature—a first for any airline globally. This
addition has significantly improved the hassle-free travel
pillar, especially considering the extensive usage of
WhatsApp among the digital population in South Africa.
The WhatsApp channel’s seamless integration
automatically identifies customers based on their cell phone
numbers, retrieving their booking information without the
need for repetitive data entry. Furthermore, the recent
update allowing customers to purchase bags via the
platform is another global first. The channel has proven to
be an engaging and comfortable way for customers to
interact with the airline.
Additionally, FlySafair’s mobile application and website
have been major successes from an e-commerce standpoint.
The airline has made continuous improvements to these
platforms, setting a commendable internal KPI of 52
website releases per year and pushing for ongoing
optimisation. Notably, FlySafair’s fraud department has
achieved remarkable results, maintaining impressively low
fraud numbers despite offering a wide range of payment
methods.
Embracing a culture of constant improvement, FlySafair’s
change agents remain focused on exploring new avenues
and staying hungry for progress. They prioritise growth and
innovation to elevate their services continuously.
Finally, FlySafair’s renowned birthday sales, which
garnered enormous attention in the market, have been a
testament to the airline’s technological prowess.
Successfully managing the high traffic and ensuring smooth
operations during these events has been a commendable
feat, showcasing FlySafair’s ability to handle significant
challenges with efficiency and excellence.

14. Key Insights for Success
While advising aspiring entrepreneurs,
Eswee said, “Understand the complexity
of an airline operation, manage your cost
and understand the factors you need but
are reliant on external parties. Start small
and simple. Frills are simply distractions
that detract from customer experience.
The basics are very important; focus on
those. From a technology perspective, do
not overextend yourself, especially in the
beginning. Look at the absolute essentials
and scale up as you grow. Once you have
invested in some of the bigger
technologies, it is extremely hard to get
out of them.”
According to Eswee, the key to success in
the technology space lies in building a
strong team comprising of like-minded
and passionate individuals who fully align
with the company’s strategy and goals.
Empowering these team members to
excel, encouraging them to take risks and
learn from failures, and embarking on the
journey together are essential elements
for success.
Eswee strongly believes that the people
component in the technology industry is
often underestimated. Having a team of
dedicated and enthusiastic individuals
who wholeheartedly buy into the
company’s vision can drive innovation
and propel the organisation to new
heights.
In the challenging aviation industry,
where margins are notoriously low,
precise decision-making becomes
paramount. Eswee emphasises the
importance of being critical of the
resources and investments needed,
ensuring that every decision made is
strategically aligned with the company’s
objectives.

Accessibility, Inclusivity, and Security!
Technology is always changing and captivating the
minds of those who are creatively inclined. Every
day, new advancements and innovations are
reshaping the way we live, work, and interact with the
world. From the latest gadgets to groundbreaking software
and cutting-edge research, technology never ceases to
amaze us. Amidst the charismatic prospect of technology
and innovation, where advancements occur swiftly, there
emerge remarkable individuals distinguished by their
passion, vision, and determination.
Gur Geva, the Founder, and CEO of iiDENTIFii, is
undeniably one of these remarkable individuals. Armed
with a Chartered Accountant’s background and an
unrelenting commitment to leveraging AI and intelligent
technologies for societal betterment, Gur Geva is on a
mission to redefine digital identity in Africa.
His journey began in the field of finance, where he honed
his skills as a Chartered Accountant. Yet, his fascination
with technology and its potential to reshape the world was
an ever-present driving force. “I consider myself a
technologist,” Gur Geva says with a twinkle in his eye.
“I’ve always believed that technology can be harnessed to
solve complex problems and drive meaningful change.”
This belief led him to establish iiDENTIFii, a cutting-edge
technology company that specializes in digital identity
solutions. Gur Geva’s vision was clear from the start: to
make digital identity more accessible, inclusive, and secure
across the African continent.
His journey from Chartered Accountant to digital identity
trailblazer is nothing short of remarkable. His career has
always been marked by a deep interest in leading

innovations within the financial sector. However, Gur
doesn’t merely view himself as a financial expert; he
considers himself a technologist with a mission to harness
the power of cutting-edge technologies like AI for the
betterment of society.
At the heart of Gur Geva’s mission lies the recognition that
effective and secure digital identity is the cornerstone of the
future financial services sector. It’s not just about
innovation; it’s about making digital identity accessible,
inclusive, and, above all, safer for individuals across the
African continent.
iiDENTIFii has become a beacon of progress in the world
of digital identity. With an exceptional team and strategic
technology partnerships, Gur embarked on a mission to
redefine the way individuals establish and verify their
digital identities.
Below are the highlights of the interview:
Could you please brief us on iiDENTIFii and tell us
about its inception?
iiDENTIFii is an enterprise-grade, African-centred digital
identification program that uses biometric facial liveness to
determine whether a person conducting a digital transaction
is who they say they are. We use face biometrics, which has
been proven to be the safest and most effective way to
determine a person’s identity, and we use passive liveness
to ensure that it is indeed them performing a transaction and
not a fraudster using their likeness. At the heart of this
solution is a deep desire to combat money laundering and
financial crime on the continent. This desire stems from a
personal experience I had several years ago.
When my daughter was learning to walk, I took her to the
park around the corner from our apartment each day.

18. It was a memorable time for me as a parent, surrounded by
nature and watching her grow.
A few months later, a family friend’s nanny was approached
at the same park and offered a large sum of money in
exchange for walking away from the pram where my
friend’s child slept. The incident shook me to my core. We
were in that park every day, only a few months before. That
could have easily been my child in that situation. This
personal experience made me all the more attuned to the
pervasive threat of human trafficking in our society. I
became determined to find a way to use my strengths to
stop trafficking in its tracks.
I realized that the silent driver and enabler of human
trafficking is money. In order for criminals to successfully
transact, sums of money need to be exchanged and
laundered without raising the suspicion of the authorities. I
saw a gap in the African market for a platform that could
guarantee that the person making or receiving a transaction
is live, real, and who they say they are. Human trafficking,
as abhorrent as it is, exists because it is lucrative. However,
the funds obtained from these illegal activities need to be
washed. In doing so, criminals need to steal the identities of
others. By making it as difficult as possible to steal a
person’s identity, we can help combat human trafficking and
more.
How would you describe your leadership style, and how
has it contributed to the growth and success of
iiDENTIFii?
As a leader, I am inspired by my vision of a future where
everyone is able to access and use a safe and functional
digital identity. I have surrounded myself with a team that
shares my passion for this vision and believes in its
relevance. We started out small, with our founders taking
care of every aspect of the business, so we celebrate the
specific expertise of all our employees and value the
contributions they make to the business.
I feel that iiDENTIFii has continued to grow and be
successful owing to the foundation of a clear leadership
vision and continued motivation for every member of our
team.
The fields of digital identity, biometric verification, AI,
and machine learning are rapidly evolving. How does
iiDENTIFii stay ahead of the curve and continue to be
an industry and thought leader in these areas?
We are grateful to draw on the global, market-leading
insight of our technology partner, iProov, in our
understanding of high-level international trends. We also
bring our own deep African technology services expertise,
complemented by the on-the-ground insight of our local
African partners.
Could you provide some examples of how iiDENTIFii
has enabled the digital identity journey of Tier 1 Banks
in Africa? What sets your solutions apart from
competitors in the market?
In the context of the country’s recent greylisting,
iiDENTIFii has to date partnered with three leading South
African banks to fortify their digital identification and
onboarding processes. This is part of a wider banking
strategy to protect companies and consumers against money
laundering and fraud.

19. Our 4D Liveness solution stands apart with its resilience to
deep fake and replay attacks. It comprises different color
lights that reflect in a certain sequence of the user’s face,
which helps determine true biometric liveness. This is not
only the most secure approach but also the most scalable.
As a result, iiDENTIFii has been the solution of choice for
South Africa’s leading banks.
As a CEO, what are some of the challenges you have
faced in your role, and how have you overcome them?
As with many high-growth startups, one of my core
challenges has been to scale and empower my team fast and
efficiently to meet exponential demand. Thankfully, we
built the business on a strong technological foundation that
was fully equipped to scale at pace. I have focused my
energies on assembling a capable and powerful team that
can grow and run the business effectively, while I turn my
focus to iiDENTIFii’s future.
How does iiDENTIFii prioritize innovation and research
in order to continuously improve its technology and stay
competitive in the market?
Innovation is not separate from business; it is an innate part
of our DNA. Practically, this means that our product team is
continually learning from technological updates in the
market, brainstorming approaches to emerging security
threats, and listening carefully to our customers to
understand their needs on the ground.
Can you share any upcoming projects or initiatives that
iiDENTIFii is working on that you are particularly
excited about?
I am excited to be working with leading financial
institutions across the wider African continent to champion
Africa-led identity solutions. This plays into our long-term
focus on becoming the default enterprise-grade identity
verification service provider on the continent.
In your opinion, what do you think is the biggest
opportunity or potential impact of digital identity,
biometric verification, AI, and machine learning in the
future?
I believe the biggest opportunity lies in the potential for
greater socio-economic inclusion. AI and machine learning
are built to simplify complex processes. Not only will this
benefit businesses weighed down by legacy processes and
information, but it will have a powerful impact on
consumers as well. Thanks to these emerging technologies,
those who were previously unbanked or did not have access
to essential services will be afforded greater inclusion
because technology can meet them where they are.
What are some of the values and principles that drive
iiDENTIFii as a company, and how do these translate
into the work you do and the relationships you build
with your clients?
We are driven by principles of the right to inclusion,
integrity, innovation, and a continued commitment to our
customers and their end users. This informs the open,
productive working relationships we build for our clients,
as well as the fully customized solutions we create for
them.
Finally, what advice would you give to aspiring
entrepreneurs or individuals looking to enter the field of
digital identity and biometric verification?
I would advise entrepreneurs to focus on building a strong,
scalable technology foundation that has the power to meet
their vision.

Jessica
A Champion for Jus ce in South Africa
The world is teeming with opportunities for positive
change. We’ve all experienced them in some form
or another: the time we were denied a loan because
of our race; the time we were denied medical treatment
because of our gender; and the time we were told we
weren’t qualified for a job because of our age.
But what happens when you’re wronged? What if you’re
not afforded justice?
You have a choice: you can become frustrated or you can
take action. That’s precisely what Jessica chose to do. She
committed herself to ensuring that fairness prevails, and she
dedicates herself to helping others receive the recognition
and support they rightfully deserve.
In the heart of South Africa, a young girl named Jessica
Dewhurst began to see the world around her through
different eyes. The “Rainbow Nation,” as her country was
known, boasted of equal rights and freedoms for all, but the
reality she witnessed was one of deep division and
inequality. This realization ignited a spark within her, a
passion to make a change.
Growing up in a land marred by a history of racial
segregation and apartheid, Jessica knew that her privilege
as a white South African could be a powerful tool for
justice. Under the mentorship of remarkable teachers, Dr.
Evona Rebelo and Brother Paul Hurley, her anger
transformed into a lifelong commitment to addressing the
injustices that plagued her beloved nation.
A Story of Grassroots Activism, Empowering Communities,
and Transforming Injustice
Today, Jessica stands as the Founder and Chief Executive
Officer behind “The Justice Desk,” an international non-
profit organization dedicated to human rights. Her journey
from anger to activism has not gone unnoticed. She’s been
recognized as one of Africa’s and South Africa’s most
inspiring youth, earning accolades from leaders, royalty,
and global organizations, including the likes of the South
African presidency, Prince Edward, Countess Sophie, The
Obama Foundation, and Lead SA.
Her commitment to doing what is right has earned her the
title of Glamour Magazine’s “Woman of the Year” for her
relentless activism. Her efforts have even drawn the
attention of global figures like Prince Harry and Meghan
Markle, who, after witnessing The Justice Desk’s impact.

24. Below are the highlights of the interview:
Could you please tell about yourself and what motivated
you to embark on this sector? Could you please brief
about Justice Desk Africa and its inception story?
I began trying to address injustice by working for multiple
charity-based organizations, but I soon realized that no
matter how many people we helped, the same people
continued to need the same help each and every day,
meaning that the injustices they were experiencing were not
being addressed effectively enough. I asked myself, “What
are we actually solving here?”. I was happy that we were
able to feed, clothe, and give people access to shelter, but I
was extremely conscious of the fact that these efforts were
not actually ending hunger, poverty, and homelessness. We
were addressing the symptoms of injustice, but not the
injustice itself that forced the people I love to need these
services in the first place.
I then decided to spend time at the United Nations (UN)
Human Rights Council with Edmund Rice International,
where I began engaging in various advocacy and human
rights mechanisms. However, I then began reflecting on the
fact that even though we were doing good work and
influencing policies and changes in law, that did not
necessarily mean that the lives of the people I loved across
Africa were actually being positively changed as a result. I
realized that although laws were important and contained
wonderful ideas for change, if there were no people to
actually implement those laws, then surely they were just
words on a page.
It was after working in both the charity and international
advocacy sectors that I decided to go home, to the very
grassroots communities that I was fighting for, in order to
heal, learn, love, be molded, and be challenged, and in the
process, I was shown by our people how we could really
affect systemic change. Firstly, I was shown that the true
experts in any community as to what their issues are and
how to solve them are the community itself. Because of
injustice, not all people had access to the knowledge,
platforms, and resources to respond to these issues, but they
most definitely knew what they were and had insightful
ideas as to how to address them. Secondly, I was taught that
every person has their own voice, story, and experiences;
it's theirs, and so they should be the ones telling it.
Moreover, they should be the ones empowered to lead and
sustain their own change and transform their own
communities, not having to rely on others to speak for
them.
During my time working across countless communities in
Africa, it was through spending time and learning from the

25. real experts, the everyday people, that I was shown what
my role in this world was. If I could simply educate, equip,
and empower the everyday person to be able to lead their
own change, then they could make those laws a reality,
ensure true transformation, sustain it, and finally build the
country that we all dreamed of.
This was the spark that lit the flame, which, in 2013, led me
to found what is today known as Justice Desk Africa.
What is the primary focus of Justice Desk Africa’s
mission and work, and in which countries have it
operated in as of 2023, and are there plans to expand to
other regions?
JDA fights for Human Rights across Africa, by educating,
training, and empowering everyday people to become
Human Rights Defenders. Since our establishment in 2013,
we have impacted the lives of over 2 million people. We
currently operate in 7 African countries: South Africa,
Zambia, Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, Liberia,
and Ghana, with plans to expand into Kenya, Tanzania, and
South Sudan.
Could you describe a specific project or initiative by
Justice Desk Africa that you are particularly proud of
and explain its impact?
I am incredibly proud of the work done within our Youth
Ambassadors Project, where we educate, equip, and
empower young people from across Africa to stand up
against human rights violations within their schools,
communities, and countries. The countries we currently
have ambassadors in include South Africa, Zambia,
Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone, Liberia, The Gambia, and Ghana.
We train our YAs to be able to identify injustice at a
systemic level as well as to run high-impact advocacy
campaigns to challenge and address it.
We’ve seen incredible results and impact from this project,
including boys helping to abolish the Tampon Tax in South
Africa, schoolchildren bringing an end to corporal
punishment in their schools in Zambia, and even students
leading the call to end the practice of child brides in their
community.
Some of our YAs have been responsible for the capture of
human traffickers, the rescue of victims, and the
establishment of anti-trafficking strategies that still save
lives to this day. People too often say children are the

Justice Desk Africa works alongside the United Nations in
order to challenge human rights violations across Africa.
We are also a core partner of Edmund Rice International, an
ECOSOC adviser to the Human Rights Council.
Together, we continually submit joint oral and written
submissions based on the information our everyday
activists in each country give us regarding the human rights
violations they are experiencing in order to use that
information to engage in various UN mechanisms, such as
Treaty Body Committees and the Universal Periodic
Review process.
We also do a lot of national and grassroots advocacy work,
trying to strengthen laws, hold leaders accountable, and
hopefully bring about positive change across Africa as a
result.

“I have been able to see firsthand how much of a positive
effect the early intervention work at JDA has on children.
The children in our projects come from communities where
abuse, violence, crime, substance abuse, and other negative
influences are very common. Furthermore, many of these
children do not have support or positive role models at
home or in their community. This often contributes to
children adopting negative behaviors and actions because
that is what they are exposed to on a daily basis.” - JDA

The Justice Desk is a relatively small organization, but the
impact of its work is substantial. Its sectors of work include

There are so many memorable stories, but one of
the most recent is of one of the boys in our
iNtsika yeThemba Project who made a significant
difference in his community. The project focuses
on empowering young boys who are at risk of
joining gangs, especially boys without posi ve
male role models, to become women’s rights
defenders. The boys challenge toxic masculinity,
build posi ve ideas of masculinity, and ensure
that they never grow to be someone who
perpetuates violence against anyone else.
During a social gathering one evening, he no ced
a man who had started to get quite aggressive
and physical towards a woman. Eventually, he
started to beat her up, and it became quickly
evident that her life was at risk. The adults, for
the most part, either ignored it or just sat back as
it happened. However, this incredible 16-year-old
boy from our iNtsika Project stood up and
stopped him, saving the woman’s life.
Seeing this, the community as a whole responded
by a acking the man, and through vigilante
jus ce, they wanted to kill him. But again, our
young man stood up and said, “No! Stop this;
violence is never the answer.” He began to explain
that what they were doing was wrong and that
responding to violence with more violence just
makes things worse, never solving anything. He
then told them that they should take the man to
the police sta on, open a case, become witnesses
for the woman, and help her seek jus ce. The
community was so taken aback by his bravery and
commitment to doing what was right that they
stopped, and another life was saved.
The community that day recognized that the
young boy was right; his way of preaching
kindness and understanding managed to get
through to them. The iNtsika boy that day
became an Everyday Ac vist, empowered by all
he had learned through Jus ce Desk Africa. I can't
tell you enough how proud I am of him and our
many other kids who make such a difference.

29. eadership, often mistaken as a job title or a set of
Lresponsibilities, is, in fact, a skill that can be
cultivated and honed over time. It's not something
you are born with or acquire solely through a promotion.
True leadership transcends the boundaries of hierarchy and
encompasses a broad spectrum of qualities and behaviors.
In this article, we'll explore the idea that leadership is a
skill to cultivate and discuss how you can grow as a leader,
regardless of your current role or position.
Leadership Beyond Titles
The traditional view of leadership is often associated with
positions of power and authority. However, contemporary
leadership theories emphasize that anyone, irrespective of
their title or role, can be a leader. Leadership is about
influence, not control. It's about inspiring, motivating, and
guiding others towards a common goal. Therefore, to
become a true leader, one must look beyond job titles and
responsibilities and focus on personal growth and
development.
Skills to Cultivate
Leadership is a multifaceted skill, and it involves a wide
range of competencies. Here are some key skills that
leaders should cultivate:
1. Self-Awareness: True leadership begins with self-
awareness. Understanding your strengths, weaknesses,
values, and beliefs allows you to lead with authenticity and
integrity. Self-aware leaders are better equipped to make
informed decisions and build trust with their teams.
2. Emotional Intelligence: Empathy, social skills, and
emotional regulation are crucial for effective leadership.
Leaders who possess high emotional intelligence can
connect with their team members on a deeper level,
fostering a positive and productive work environment.
3. Communication: Effective communication is at the core
of leadership. Leaders must be able to articulate their
vision, give constructive feedback, and listen actively to
their team members. Clear and open communication fosters
trust and collaboration.
4. Adaptability: In today's fast-paced world, change is
constant. Leaders need to be adaptable and open to new
ideas and perspectives. They must be willing to embrace
change and guide their teams through transitions.
5. Decision-Making: Making sound decisions is a critical
aspect of leadership. Leaders should be able to analyze
situations, weigh the pros and cons, and make choices that
benefit the team and the organization as a whole.
6. Problem-Solving: Leadership often involves addressing
complex challenges. Leaders need to be effective problem
solvers, capable of breaking down issues into manageable
parts and finding creative solutions.
7. Delegation: Delegating tasks and responsibilities is a
vital skill for leaders. It allows leaders to focus on strategic
aspects while empowering their team members to take
ownership of their work.
8. Conflict Resolution: Conflicts are inevitable in any group
or organization. Leaders should be skilled at managing and
resolving conflicts in a constructive and respectful manner.
9. Vision and Strategy: A strong leader has a clear vision for
the future and the ability to create a strategic plan to
achieve it. This vision inspires and guides the team.
10. Team Building: Building a high-performing team is a
fundamental leadership skill. Leaders should know how to
select, develop, and motivate team members.
Cultivating these skills can help individuals grow as
leaders, whether they currently hold a leadership role or
not.
Leadership as a Continuous Journey
Becoming a leader is not a destination; it's a journey.
There's no fixed point at which one can say, "I am now a
leader." Leadership development is an ongoing process that
requires dedication and self-improvement.
Here are some steps to consider in your leadership journey:
1. Self-Reflection: Start by examining your own behaviors,
values, and beliefs. Assess your strengths and weaknesses
as a leader. Understand your motivations and what you
hope to achieve as a leader.

30. 2. Seek Feedback: Solicit feedback from your peers,
superiors, and team members. This can provide valuable
insights into your leadership style and areas for
improvement.
3. Learn from Others: Study the leaders you admire,
whether they are within your organization or from other
walks of life. What qualities and practices make them
effective leaders? Learn from their experiences.
4. Set Goals: Establish clear, measurable goals for your
leadership development. What specific skills or qualities do
you want to improve? Create a plan to work on these goals.
5. Practice Leadership: You don't need a formal leadership
title to practice leadership. Take on leadership roles in
projects or initiatives. Offer to mentor or guide colleagues.
The more you practice, the more you'll learn.
6. Embrace Challenges: Challenges and setbacks are part of
the leadership journey. Embrace them as opportunities to
learn and grow. Overcoming obstacles can be a powerful
catalyst for leadership development.
7. Stay Informed: Leadership is not a static field. Stay
informed about current trends and best practices in
leadership. Attend workshops, seminars, or read books and
articles on leadership.
8. Network: Connect with other professionals, both within
and outside your organization. Networking can provide you
with diverse perspectives and opportunities for growth.
The Importance of Mentorship
Mentorship plays a significant role in leadership
development. A mentor can provide guidance, share their
experiences, and offer constructive feedback. They can help
you navigate the complexities of leadership and provide a
sounding board for your ideas and concerns. If you have the
opportunity, seek out a mentor who can support your
growth as a leader.
Leadership in Practice:
One of the best ways to cultivate leadership skills is by
putting them into practice. Here are some strategies to
integrate leadership into your daily work:
1. Lead by Example: Demonstrate the qualities and
behaviors you expect from your team. Your actions set the
tone for the work environment.
2. Build Relationships: Invest time in building strong,
positive relationships with your team members. Trust and
respect are the foundation of effective leadership.
3. Encourage Growth: Support the professional and
personal growth of your team members. Provide
opportunities for them to learn, develop new skills, and take
on greater responsibilities.
4. Communicate Effectively: Be clear and transparent in
your communication. Foster open dialogue and encourage
your team to share their ideas and concerns.
5. Recognize Achievements: Acknowledge and celebrate
the achievements of your team. Recognition boosts morale
and motivation.
6. Adapt to Change: Embrace change with a positive
attitude and guide your team through transitions. Show
resilience and a willingness to learn from challenges.
7. Inspire and Motivate: Paint a compelling vision for the
future and motivate your team to work towards it. Inspire
them to give their best effort.
8. Provide Constructive Feedback: Offer feedback in a
constructive and empathetic manner. Help your team
members grow by highlighting their strengths and areas for
improvement.
In conclusion, leadership is not confined to job titles and
responsibilities. It is a skill that can be cultivated and
developed by anyone willing to embark on the journey of
self-discovery and personal growth. Leadership
encompasses a wide array of skills and qualities that go
beyond organizational hierarchies.
Whether you are a team member, a middle manager, or a
CEO, you can continually grow as a leader. The key lies in
self-reflection, learning, practice, and a commitment to
becoming the best leader you can be. By focusing on your
personal development and striving to inspire and guide
those around you, you can make a positive impact in your
workplace and beyond. Remember, leadership is a lifelong
journey, not a destination.

Building Dreams, Leading Change
A Visionary Leader's Journey Through Diverse Sectors,
Cultures, and High-Performing Teams!
uccess isn't merely a solitary pursuit but rather a
Scollaborative symphony conducted by high-
performing teams. These teams are the driving force
behind innovation, productivity, and the achievement of
ambitious goals. However, the ability to build and empower
such teams is an art form, a strategic skill possessed by
leaders who understand that the whole is greater than the
sum of its parts.
One individual who adheres to this philosophy is Stuart
Kent. His journey is not just a testament to his professional
acumen but also a reflection of his unrelenting commitment
to excellence and innovation. With a career spanning over
two decades and a passion for taking on the most
challenging projects in the energy sector, he is not just a
leader; he's a visionary driving the future of industrial

Stuart's journey with his current company began in 2000 as
a Field Engineer, and over the years, he has ascended
through various management roles. His tenure has been
marked by a deep understanding of complex turnaround and
construction projects, making him a go-to expert in the
field.
In December 2020, Stuart embarked on an extraordinary
journey by leading a management buyout that completely
transformed his company, Aurex Constructors, into a
proudly South African-owned entity. Since then, the
company has experienced unprecedented growth, evident in
its impressive EBIT figures that highlight its financial
strength.
Furthermore, a recent merger between RMB Ventures and
Bopa Moruo has opened up exciting new opportunities and

its position in the market. With CEO Stuart at the helm, a
team of passionate and diverse leaders has been carefully
assembled to execute the company's growth strategy.
Together, they are driving Aurex towards a future filled with
immense potential.
Below are the highlights of the interview:
Aurex Constructors' Proven Legacy
Aurex Constructors has a rich history dating back to the
1980s, when it was originally known as Kentz in South
Africa. In 2014, it was acquired by the Canadian
multinational company SNC-Lavalin. However, in 2020,
Aurex Constructors underwent a management buyout and
rebranded itself. Throughout its existence, Aurex
Constructors has accumulated over 40 years of valuable
experience. This experience has allowed the company to
specialize in Industrial Construction, Turnarounds, and
Maintenance services, particularly within the energy sector.
Aurex Constructors has successfully completed numerous
complex projects in various industries, including oil and
gas, mining, renewable energy, and conventional power
plants.
In June 2023, Aurex Constructors achieved a significant
milestone in its growth and development by forming a
strategic equity partnership with RMB Ventures and Bopa
Moruo. This collaboration brings together three influential
entities, marking an important step forward for Aurex. The
partnership unlocks new opportunities and resources that
will contribute to Aurex's market position. With RMB
Ventures' extensive investment expertise and Bopa Moruo’s
deep knowledge of emerging markets, this alliance
establishes a solid foundation for continued success and
innovation within the Aurex ecosystem. The future looks
promising as these three entities combine their strengths to
deliver sustainable value for stakeholders and make a
positive impact on the global business landscape.
The Secrets of Being a CEO
As a leader in the organization, Stuart's main responsibility
is to shape the strategic direction of the business. This
involves clearly articulating a vision, establishing
expectations, and defining the necessary deliverables with
the team, to achieve their goals. Additionally, he focuses on
proactively identifying and removing any obstacles that
could impede their progress. When objectives are clearly

34. defined and the team is motivated to achieve them, it
greatly simplifies Stuart's responsibilities and facilitates a
smoother path to success.
Leader's Experience
The involvement of SNC-Lavalin played a significant role
in the development of Aurex Constructors, as it influenced
the formation of various policies and procedures to meet
global standards. Aurex Constructors greatly benefited from
SNC-Lavalin's emphasis on compliance and ethics,
particularly in their dealings with Sub-Saharan nations. The
decision to separate from SNC-Lavalin occurred during the
challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic, requiring
prompt strategic choices to ensure the company's long-term
sustainability.
Driving Strategic Direction
When determining the strategic direction of Aurex
Constructors, Stuart emphasizes the importance of
considering several crucial factors. First and foremost, it is
essential to ensure that the strategy aligns with the
macroeconomic dynamics of the identified regions that
offer promising opportunities. Anticipating and planning for
long-term prospects that align with the envisioned path for
the business is also key. Additionally, assessing the
organization's competence and capacity is necessary to
effectively execute the key objectives that support the
chosen strategy. Rather than waiting for a market gap to
emerge before building capacity, it is crucial to anticipate
these opportunities and be prepared to quickly take
advantage of them when they materialise.
Lastly, the organization must demonstrate agility in order to
adapt to the evolving landscape and adjust its strategy
accordingly. The strategic direction of the company is a
dynamic process that continually evolves as market gaps
are observed and opportunities are swiftly responded to.
Power of Ethical Operations
The culture within an organization takes a long time to
build and can erode quickly. The importance and value of
engaging with the wider organizational team are often
underestimated. Stuart emphasized the direct correlation he
has personally observed between connecting with
individuals across the organization and the resulting
motivation and positive culture. It is furthermore crucial not
to restrict social interactions to just customers and
employees, as maintaining strong relationships with the
supply chain is equally important.
October, 2023 www.thecioworld.com
32
35. Measuring Success and Igniting Continuous
Improvements
Stuart emphasized the importance of tracking success and
progress to ensure that the company is on the right path. He
mentioned that they have a balanced set of key performance
indicators (KPIs) that measure organizational performance
across various crucial elements. Additionally, they place
significant emphasis on the happiness and well-being of
their staff through surveys, one-on-one discussions, and
peer reviews. The company also focuses on measuring its
impact on the environment and takes appropriate measures
in this regard. Stuart highlighted that making a profit is
crucial for the sustainability of the organization, as it
enables the development of employees and benefits the
wider communities they work in.
Skyrocketing Dynamic Leadership
Aurex Constructors has undergone significant changes in
response to the dynamic environment in which it operates.
A recent decision has been made to merge the Construction
and Turnarounds & Maintenance business lines into a
unified solution known as "One Aurex." This consolidation
allows for the integration of diverse talents and skill sets
within project teams, enabling the successful completion of
complex projects within tight timelines. In addition, Aurex
Constructors has chosen to establish an engineering
department dedicated to Renewable Energy projects. This
strategic move aligns with the increasing demand for
sustainable energy both in South Africa and internationally,
with a particular focus on pursuing EPC contracts in this
sector.
Conquering the Unconquerable
Developing a sustainable project pipeline within the
challenging economic environment of South Africa is an
ongoing obstacle. Stuart emphasizes that the ongoing
struggle to recover business costs in a consistent manner
directly influences the ability to effectively employ and
develop resources. This situation highlights the necessity
for innovative solutions and strategic interventions to
overcome these barriers and pave the way for economic
stability and growth. In recent years, focused efforts have
been made to enhance the skills and capabilities of the core
staff to be able to operate across multiple sectors, project
types and disciplines. As a result, the company has
positioned itself to successfully navigate the cyclical nature
of project environments. This adaptability ensures
operational resilience and enhances overall organizational
agility, enabling the company to thrive in different business
landscapes.
Foreign investment plays a crucial role in addressing the
persistent unemployment challenges in South Africa.
Increased investment leads to a surge in project
development, which in turn provides more predictable
project timelines. Consequently, companies like them can
allocate more resources to recruit and develop teams,
strengthening their ability to effectively support and deliver
on these projects.
To mitigate the risks posed by the struggling South African
economy, a strategic decision has been made to actively
pursue project opportunities beyond national borders. This
proactive approach not only supports the continued growth
and development of the staff but also contributes to
establishing a more sustainable and diversified pipeline of
opportunities.
Mastering Market Competitiveness
To ensure the company remains competitive in the market
and adjusts to evolving industry trends, it is crucial to strike
a balance between acquiring the required expertise, which
may involve additional costs, and respecting customers'
budget constraints. Stuart said project-centric companies
heavily rely on efficient project execution for their
sustainability. Achieving this involves effective project
planning and adhering closely to the established plan. By
doing so, customer demands can be met while also
maintaining cost efficiency and upholding high standards of
safety and quality.
Exciting Initiatives
Stuart enthusiastically said, "We are excited to see how the
"Just Energy Transition" initiatives develop over the next
few years. The recent advancements in the Renewables
sector in South Africa are particularly encouraging and
poised to unlock numerous job opportunities within the
country.
Supporting our customers within Sub-Saharan Africa and
the Middle East on various projects is also an exciting
journey that we are actively engaged in. The prospect of
exporting the expertise we've cultivated over the last 3
decades in South Africa to other regions is exhilarating,
both for our company and our dedicated staff.”

36. Rethinking Traditional
and
Notions of Authority
Titles
Ever had a boss who abused their power or a leader
who just didn't seem to get it? We've all dealt with
authority figures who made us roll our eyes. The
problem often comes down to outdated ideas of what
leadership should look like. But times are changing.
Hierarchies are flattening, access to information is rising,
and people are increasingly skeptical of the "because I said
so" style of leadership.
Authority and titles used to be everything, but today
leadership is all about trust, relationships, and actually
listening to the people around you. The leaders of the future
are collaborative, not commanding. They're in the trenches
with the rest of us, not shouting orders from some corner
office. Leadership 2.0 is about empowering others, not
controlling them. It's time we rethought traditional notions
of authority and what real leadership looks like. The future
is flat, open, and democratic. The question is, are you ready
to join it?
Questioning the Value of Titles and Positions
Today, traditional hierarchical structures and notions of
authority don't always lead to the best outcomes. Relying
on titles and positions alone to determine who leads and
who follows can be shortsighted.
True leadership comes in many forms and from unexpected
places. Maybe the intern sees a solution no one else has
considered. Perhaps the entry-level employee on the front
lines has insight into customers' needs that executives lack.
When we're open to input from any source, we benefit from
a diversity of perspectives.
Rather than assuming the highest-ranking person should
make all key decisions, look for leadership ability,
expertise, and sound judgment wherever they exist. Shared
and rotating leadership models where people lead based on
the needs of each situation are becoming more common.
They help organizations stay agile and innovative.
Of course, titles still have their place in establishing
accountability and compensation. But they shouldn't be the
only factor that determines who gets a say or how much
influence each person wields. Look beyond the nameplates
and corner offices. See people for their talents, knowledge,
and potential, not just their job descriptions.
When you do that, you'll find leadership everywhere. And
your organization will be all the better for it.
Focusing on Skills and Merit Rather Than Authority
When it comes to leadership, it's time to rethink the
traditional model of authority and titles. In today's fast-
paced, global workplace, skills, and merit matter more than
position or status.
Effective modern leaders lead through influence and
expertise, not control or power over others. They earn
respect through their vision, communication, and the ability
to develop others. Title and authority mean little without the
right skills and mindset.
What really counts is a leader's competence, emotional
intelligence, and ability to motivate and empower teams.
October, 2023 www.thecioworld.com
34
38. The authority that comes with a title won't make up for a
lack of people's skills or technical expertise. Teams today
want mentors and coaches, not bosses.
The key is focusing on developing leadership qualities and
a growth mindset, not chasing a higher position or more
impressive title. Earning trust and influence is about
continuously improving your skills, expanding your
knowledge, and improving your communication and
relationship-building abilities.
When leaders focus on empowering others through
mentorship and coaching, it creates highly engaged teams
that can adapt to change. Valuing skills and merit over
authority and status is the hallmark of progressive, forward-
thinking organizations poised for success. The leader of the
future leads through inspiration, not control, creating space
for innovation, collaboration, and peak performance.
Let go of traditional notions of leadership. Titles and
authority are fleeting, but skills and expertise endure.
Continuous self-improvement, maintaining a growth
mindset, and empowering others—that's the new leadership
model to aspire to. Focus on merit and competency, and
your influence and impact will grow.
Building a Collaborative Team Culture
To build a collaborative team culture, start by rethinking
traditional authority structures. Leaders should empower
teams by distributing authority and encouraging shared
decision-making.
Teams work best when each member feels heard and
valued. As a leader, make space for all voices to be
represented in discussions. Pose open-ended questions to
draw out different viewpoints and facilitate meaningful
conversations. Shared understanding and consensus-
building, not unilateral directives, should guide team
decisions.
Foster psychological safety by modeling openness and
vulnerability yourself. Admit when you're unsure of the best
path forward and invite the team to problem-solve together.
Thank members for challenging ideas and taking risks.
Their input makes the team smarter and more capable.
Evaluate team success based on group accomplishments,
not individual achievements. Celebrate wins together and
recognize collaborative efforts. This reinforces the mindset
that "we're all in this together.”
Mentor new team members to understand your
collaborative culture. Explain that titles and hierarchy
matter less than working as partners. Set clear expectations
for open communication, co-creation, and shared
leadership. The more people adopt this mindset, the
stronger your team will become.
Building a collaborative team culture requires patience and
a commitment to continuous improvement. But by valuing
each voice, empowering shared decision-making, and
focusing on group success, you'll develop a self-reliant,
high-performing team. And that is worth the investment.
Conclusion
So don't be afraid to shake up the status quo and challenge
traditional power structures. Question preconceptions about
who deserves a seat at the table and make space for fresh
voices and perspectives. The future is unwritten, so take a
chance on people who don't necessarily fit the typical mold
of a leader. You'll likely be pleasantly surprised by the
results. At the end of the day, true leadership comes in
many forms. And the leaders of tomorrow may look nothing
like the leaders of yesterday. But that's a good thing—it
means we're evolving. And evolution is what ensures
progress.
