Engineering
Closingthe
operational
gap
Every engineering project at an airport
or centre has many different elements,
from technology, regulation and
people change to procedural change,
safety management and programme
management. The difficulty lies in finding
a partner with experience in them all.
We can offer a total solution that
takes into account every element,
from environmental awareness and
local community buy-in to meeting
international regulatory compliance
standards. This ensures that every
project goes smoothly, with no
unexpected problems along the way.
Benefit from our experience
Our Engineering service manages
a vast number of projects each year.
This gives us a wealth of experience
that will inform every phase of your
project from inception to completion.
As well as working in the regulatory
environment, we have had many
years dealing in UK and international
contracts in the unregulated ATC
market, building up a deep working
knowledge. This includes all types of
airports, from Heathrow and Gatwick
– among the busiest and most
constrained airspaces in the world
– to smaller locations with their own
particular challenges, such as Jersey.
For each project, everything we do
is geared towards the benefit you want
to achieve, for instance greater efficiency
or increased capacity. We have a deep
understanding of how to do this because
our all-round experience allows us to
bridge both the operational and
engineering communities.
Our experience in ATC operations adds a vital
extra element to our Engineering service.
It provides us with a more rounded understanding,
which ensures your technology and infrastructure
projects are designed and transitioned with
the operational context in mind.
Expertise across the board
Whatever challenge you’re facing
Engineering can provide the range
of services and expertise you need.
Our control centre systems
services will ensure you manage air
traffic as safely and efficiently as
possible – providing your controllers
with workstations that enhance their
operational and environmental efficiency
– while our airport technology services
enable you to take advantage of step
changes in technology, helping you find
new opportunities for your business and
implementing them cost effectively.
Asset optimisation
Not every project has to start from
scratch. By optimising the value of your
assets we can improve the return on
your airport’s existing investments.
For instance, we can help you to grow
by improving runway capacity using the
infrastructure in place. We also use our
experience to recommend when or where
investments might need to be accelerated
or postponed in order to deliver improved
bottom-line performance.
Technology you can trust
As an equipment provider we offer
a vendor-neutral approach. This means
you can be sure that the technology
we recommend is fit for purpose, that
it has been chosen to comply with all
legislative and operational requirements,
and will deliver cost-effective benefits.
Again, our wide experience means
we are familiar with the different
technologies available and can
make recommendations based on
real-world results.
“Our engineering expertise has been gained over
numerous years. We have designed, installed
and maintained a wide range of safety critical

Information
Unlocking
thevalue
ofdata
While ANSPs have always collected
data in order to provide the right
navigation information to airlines and
pilots, that information has only been
used in isolation. We are working with
a number of partners to increase the
value of data by bringing it together
from disparate sources. This allows us
to generate information that will give
you a powerful commercial edge.
One of the ways we can do this is by
combining weather, aircraft positioning
and delay data, enabling airlines to offer
customers valuable real-time information
about arrival and departure schedules,
and to make air travel more predictable.
The same information can also be used
to anticipate problems and re-route
aircraft at an early stage in their journey
to ensure delays are kept to a minimum.
Taking data further
As data management is a complex and
still evolving area, many airports and
ATC providers are unlikely to have the
in-house resource available to deliver
this function. And the investment
to develop this capacity may well
be prohibitive.
We were one of the first ANSPs
to manage and track data, anticipating
that it will be a driving force behind
future ATC operations. The combination

Defence
Sharingcosts
andexpertise
As the financing of military departments
comes under ever-closer scrutiny, it’s
essential to find the most cost-effective
approach to ATC. This strategy must,
of course, make sure that security
and safety are never compromised.
With airspace around the world
becoming increasingly congested,
this is a tough challenge.
Our Defence service has the
expertise to work with you and bring
all these aspects together, finding
newer and smarter ways to improve
operational performance as well
as cost-efficiency. We have many
years’ experience in civil/military
harmonisation, finding solutions
that deliver airspace benefits for
both these stakeholders.
Understanding your
unique challenges
We have proven expertise in this area,
gained through decades working with
the Ministry of Defence integrating
civil and military airspace in the UK.
In 2011, NATS and the MoD were
awarded an Air Officer Commanding’s
Commendation for their outstanding
achievements delivering complex
projects through unique innovations
and a collaborative approach. Through
our close working relationship with
the UK MoD, we have developed an
innate knowledge of what needs to be
achieved in terms of ATM and airspace
requirements, allowing us to deliver
the right results at minimal cost.
The military across the world are under
pressure to share airspace with civil aviation
for commercial, political and environmental
reasons. As we have proven in the UK,
this needn’t be a compromise – it can
offer advantages for all concerned.
Our dedicated teams with civil/military
experience can share your issues and
challenges to streamline harmonisation.
They are experienced in integrating
systems for either joint or flexible
use by civil/military aircraft and can
help you restructure your airspace
to make it work seamlessly. You can
also benefit from innovative ATC
services, developed in the commercial
environment, which we have tailored
for civil/military use.
A range of services to prepare
you for the future
The challenge of shared airspace is,
of course, complex. National security,
passenger safety and commercial
performance all provide a potent mix
that has to be dealt with sensitively,
and needs a partner with experience
in all these areas.
The challenge is not to find a
satisfactory compromise, but to develop
a solution with benefits all round. You
may well be looking at combined ATC,
airfield management or even outsourcing
to help you meet it. Whichever direction
you take, our Defence service has the
innovative solutions you need in areas
such as aeronautical data, consulting
and surveillance that will meet
everyone’s needs.
With our help you can create
a more flexible future of constrained
costs, exceptional safety and
heightened efficiency.
“The close collaboration between NATS and
the MoD enables us to share both the airspace
and infrastructure capability to manage that
airspace. Using innovative solutions, which allow
us to harmonise both operations, we are able
to maximise the efficiency of civil and military
areas of operation.

Reducing
aviation’s
environmental
impact
The environment remains a top priority both
for us and for our customers. As part of our
environmental strategy we are implementing
smarter and more responsive ways to reduce
aviation’s impact through all of our service
lines. This allows us to provide both capacity
and sustainability at the same time.
Howwe’remakingadifference
Looking to the future
We are looking to the future in a wide
range of ways, such as extensive
training for our controllers and working
with airlines and airports to identify
best practice, which we are putting into
use in airspace design and daily ATC
operations. This means that whichever
service you need, from Airspace
to Information, you’ll benefit from
reduced environmental impact and,
as a consequence, reduced energy
costs and fuel burn.
Reducing CO2
emissions
The key issue facing NATS and the
aviation industry is the need to reduce
global greenhouse gas through fuel
burn, with the cost of fuel providing
a financial motivation.
With this in mind, we consider
the environmental impact of how we
control aircraft every day. This includes
improving the efficiency of our airspace
and route network as well as investing
in new technology.
Tracking our progress
Having developed techniques to
measure our environmental performance
daily, monthly and annually, we can now
track progress towards our CO2
targets
in detail. Our Operational Centres and
Airport Units have Environment Action
Plans and annual environmental targets
to improve fuel and emissions savings.
Our strategic target is now supported
by our 3Di metric, an incentivised flight
efficiency measurement for our en-route
services – a world first.
Putting our plans into action
We are concentrating on seven key
areas to ensure our commitment to
the environment produces substantial
results. These are:
Airspace
Reducing CO2
emissions through
airspace and procedure changes.
In-flight
Increasing in-flight efficiencies.
For instance, through focused and data-
led plans for airspace improvements
that reduce fuel burn and emissions.
Technology
Using innovative tools and precision
navigation techniques to allow aircraft
to fly closer to their optimum route,
profile and speed.
People and operations
Minimising our own environmental
footprint in areas such as energy,
water, waste management and recycling.
Innovative noise management
Working with airports, airlines and
communities to explore optional
procedures to limit noise disturbance
to people living under flight paths.
Innovation
We have introduced ground-breaking
ways to reduce emissions and save fuel,
such as a flight profile monitoring tool
and 3Di environmental metric.
Partnerships
We talk to airline and airport customers,
as well as industry partners such as
Sustainable Aviation and ICAO, to find
better environmental solutions.

It’s a small world, and the aviation industry
has a large part to play in making it so.
By partnering with NATS you can make
sure your organisation benefits, not just
from our international experience,
but also from our international outlook.
Aglobal
partner
Today our expertise is being recognised
by more and more clients internationally.
In particular, the knowledge we have
gained through first-hand experience in
the de-regulation of the UK market has
become valuable to customers worldwide
who now face similar scenarios.
Clients and strategic
developments on
a global scale
We have worked alongside clients from
Norway to Brunei to address their most
pressing issues, as well as being involved
in strategic aviation developments on a
worldwide scale. Our work encompasses
bringing together airspaces in different
jurisdictions. For instance, we helped set
up the UK – Ireland FAB, the first to be
established under the SES initiative.
We are also at the forefront of
the SESAR Programme, which will
provide advanced technologies and
procedures with a view to modernising
and optimising the future European
ATM network. As part of this we are
involved in running the environmental
research part of the programme.
