What are we talking about today?
First off, let’s give you some background on the LMS Market Landscape.
Then let’s talk about why the top must have features for organizations using an LMS.
Then we will highlight ways to save LMS Costs.
And finally we will talk about finding an LMS that will grow with your needs.
I expect that the total presentation to be around 30 minutes with time for questions and answers at the end. Feel free to ask questions throughout using the chat window.
Today’s session is interactive, so let’s start with Poll question one so we can get to know each other.
While there are over 500 LMS being tracked in the international market today, there are still three market leaders that are lighting the way
Interestingly enough, they all have open source roots
You can see on the graph that LMS’s leading the way in higher ed are Moodle, Sakai and Canvas
In 2014 alone, the market grew by 21% to $2.5 billion – in 2018 the market is expected to reach $8 billion
To keep apace with this rapid growth LMS vendors are revving up to meet end user demands
End users being institutions at large, faculty and students
Before introducing the 7 Top LMS features for higher ed we will highlight leading research from Edutechnica from a report that surveyed 17,000 faculty from 151 different institutions and more than 75,000 students
While nearly 75% of faculty agree that the LMS is a very useful tool for enhancing teaching, the majority of educators use the LMS to share content, rather than utilizing the LMS for interaction or engagement activities
This intersects with students’ desire for better interaction and communication features in their institutions LMS
More specifically, students are looking for LMS features that will enable them to meaningfully engage with instructors and with other students
They are also looking for better tools within the LMS to collaborate on group projects
Thus, for Feature # 1 of the Top 7 Features in an LMS for Higher Ed, is communication channels that help facilitate meaningful online interaction is at the top of our list
- This may take the form of live chat or instant messaging features that allow students to communicate in real time. If this feature has the ability to connect as an application on the learners mobile device, it will allow him or her interact in ways that is similar to leading messaging tools such as FB messenger, iMessage, WhatsApp and SMS
Interactive forums is a great feature for group communication. With the ability to upload documents, video and images in said forums, students can get creative for resource sharing and peer editing
Wiki’s are typically a great tool for amassing research and bringing together a body of agreed upon knowledge that has been peer edited
Blogs are good for personal expression and assignment submission. The LMS Moodle extends upon this and has a feature that allows students to integrate external blogs so that their entries can be automatically posted in their Moodle blog.
News feeds are great for instructors to communicate announcements to students…it can also be used by the universities administration to remind students of important deadlines
For integration with social media, it may be the live Twitter feed of a prof, department, university or even topic of interest news streams that are relevant to the course
The final communication channel I wanted to mention is webinar integrations. Similar to the platform I am presenting to you on, it is the ability to communicate with students that very much replicates live lecture halls. Applications like Big blue button provide live chat feeds, virtual blackboards and two-way VOIP communication
Engaging design in the LMS world is also known as a theme that is branded to your organization, and has a modern, user-friendly interface
A metaphor we like to compare this to is the experience in a live classroom. If the space is unapproachable, outdated and unfamiliar, you’re probably going to have certain negative connotations with the learning experience. It is important that the user interface is friendly and inviting for your learners
Branding within this theme allow your company’s message and values to be a uniform theme throughout the learning experience
It will also create consistency between your LMS and your institution's website, creating a seamless user experience, enhancing engagement, and ultimately increasing user adoption
We highly recommend you request a demo from the vendor that you are considering.
before you go into the demonstration it is a good idea to consider your audience and their technical expertise level.
You will want to do this to ensure the technical capabilities of your users aligns with the LMS you choose
In other words, are your user’s technologically adept, or are they novices? Depending on the answer to this question, your evaluation of the ease of use will vary
Net-net, choose an LMS that is easy to use. This will increate student and faculty engagement within the LMS to increase course completion and success rates

It is also a good segue to introduce the idea of responsive design…
With close relation to engaging design, ensuring your LMS also has responsive design is important so that users will have a uniform experience on all devices: desktops, laptops, tablets and mobile devices.
In other words, responsive designs will adjust to whatever device end users access your LMS from so that the learning experience is consistent.
While not a feature in the LMS itself, we wanted to highlight the importance of support as it is currently a gap for many north American institutions
Extensive Support will ensure that your needs are met on two-different levels, support for training and support for the actual LMS itself.
A key finding in survey data from Educause reports that students and faculty feel they are not able to take full advantage of all features in their institutions LMS
In particular, faculty members feel that they could be better instructors, and students could be better students if they were more skilled at using the LMS
Finding an LMS that provides extensive training on how to make full use of feature and function will empower teachers to optimize online learning experiences
Application support on the other hand, will ensure your IT team and administrators are equipped to maintain your LMS optimally.
- When working with expert, you are guaranteed that technical issues that may arise are dealt with promptly
Many higher education institutions also find it beneficial to consult with experts on how to make the best of use of the reporting and analytics in your LMS, in addition to provide use cases to meet your goals and objectives
Net, net: when your teachers and students know how to make the utmost use of your LMS, user adoption, engagement and participation will improve significantly
Learning analytics is an emerging idea that many intuitions are beginning to take notice of and it is the number 1 reason why 60% of organizations today are looking for new a LMS
On a wide-scale, bodies have begun to collect data from higher education institution across the world to better understand how students like to learn, why students fail and what can be done to improve student engagement and retention.
On a more granular scale, departments can use LMS reporting and analytics to understand learning effectiveness and analyze metrics to know where to invest in the future
Instructors and TA’s can also use reporting dashboards to better understand learners for areas they may need additional support in, or possible areas where they could be better challenged
Common reports and dashboards to look for to support these actions include:
Course Enrollments Dashboard
Course Completion Dashboard
Time Spent Learning Dashboard
User Login Activity Dashboard
Detailed Quiz Results Report
Detailed Quiz Statistics Report
User Grades By Activity Report
User Grades By Activity Report
Who Has Not Taken Courses Report
Learners Course Progress Report
Data is not an after thought

On the slide you will notice the 4 most common integrations we see..
Student Information systems is another common integration for Universities and schools. In essence, integration with a SIS will allow learning data such as test scores, completion rates and final grades to sync directly to the SIS.
SCORM is the most commonly used authoring file for online courses. You will want to ensure that your LMS is compatible with as many versions as possible. This is especially true if your institution has more than one LMS so that courses can be compatible between them. For example, Rutgers University, a client works with more than a few LMS’s
Google docs is becoming one of the most used collaboration tools for students, integration with this application is a must
Webinar applications like Big Blue Button are often used in distance learning course when face to face instruction is needed
Single-sign-on is likely one of the most popular integrations because it allows your learners to login with credentials from another application. This helps to streamline the login process. Common SSO integrations you will want compatibility for are: CAS, LDAP, and SAML Authentication
PDF Preview gives your students and faculty members the ability to view and edit PDF’s directly within the platform via Adobe reader
Additionally, Media Players ensure all types of video, audio and animation file can be read by the post popular video streaming applications
In the age of technology, if you’re anything like me—attention spans are shrinking. Gamification is increasingly being used by instructors to keep learners engaged, motivated and even excited to excel to greater heights. Why? It’s plain and simple, games motivate because people we like to have fun.
Research has shown, that when using gamification…
Learners will improve skill-based knowledge assessments by 14%
Factual knowledge by 11%
And 9% increase in retentions rates – or in other words, online learning completion rates will increase by 9%
When looking for an LMS it’s important to find one that has the tools to allow you to implement gamification into your learning
Such tools include:
Leaderboards that allow learners to see where they rank compared to their peers and your ability to assign points to their accomplishments
Levels that learners can pass through and,
Timers that motivate learners to work smarter and faster
Plugins and course authoring tools in Moodle and Totara LMS make it easier to implement gamification into your learning/training programs
Net-net, Backed with research, using game mechanics will increase knowledge retention, engagement and motivation in your online learning and training programs
Authoring flexibility will come from authoring tools either within your LMS, or external of your LMS
External course authoring tools ones like adobe captivate
These tools will provide you the creative freedom over the entire design of your online courses
In-house, self-authoring is the most common way courses are created in higher education institutes as professors and lecturers manage their own content
Look for an LMS that has a flexible course authoring tool which provides the 4 following features:
1) Options to set roles, permissions, course progression and group activity so that you can deliver instructor-led, self-paced learning or blended learning with ease
2) Publishing abilities in a number of different formats, including HTML, XML, Flash & SCORM
3) Easy customization and editing within the course so it is simple for educators or trainers to edit courses as they deem fit
4) Built out options for quizzes and exams
One of the tip that we like to tell clients is to find an open source LMS – there are many reasons for this which include:
feature & application flexibility
Continual development backed by a large user-base and coding community, and
Portability and ownership of the code and above all cost savings
For example – leading organizations chose Moodle as their LMS, because of its longevity
There are well over 500 LMS in the market today, and as supply and demand laws continue to play out…this number will begin to fall
What does this mean for you?
Well essentially, if the LMS provider you go with is not open source, and they go out of business, you are significant risk
With an open source LMS – the code of your infrastructure is yours – you own it – meaning that your LMS will live on, even if your provider doesn’t
An LMS like Moodle is backed by a community of global developers so it will be much easier to find services that ensure you LMS’s longevity
Our other recommendation is to scope out the amount of work that is needed to deploy an LMS. One of the biggest areas that we see underestimated, is the amount of labor needed to effectively deploy you LMS – leverage a expert who can not only reduce this cost but can save you time that can be freed up for other projects.
Customization will make it difficult for you to upgrade the the latest verison of your LMS. Most repuable LMS’s update their system for security and bug fixed every 6 months…don’t put yourself at risk
