Essay about Slaughtering for the Humanness of Horses
Slaughtering for the Humanness of Horses
The closing of slaughterhouses in the United States for horses has resulted in inhumane treatment and
gross neglect for thousands of horses. Congressmen, lobbyists, activists, actors, and every day people
have petitioned for these death traps to be destroyed, all for the benefit of the horse. The horse, who
cannot speak, can only react to his surroundings. The ones to be benefited are the people who see this
as cruel, and inhumane; to give them a clear conscious, because they feel endeared to this animal. I,
too, am endeared to this animal, but understand that the horse has been put in, an all too often,
precarious situation, that even death, cannot come quick enough.
Without slaughter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One horse rescue farm received calls on 230 horses from April 2008 to August 2009 (Lewis, 2009).
That s an increase of over 1800 percent from the previous year, when slaughterhouses closed. Horse
rescue farms rely on donations, whether in the form of food, labor, or money, to make ends meet. It s
always a struggle, (Myers), who owns Sunshine Acres rescue ranch, said. It s expensive to keep
horses, and there aren t enough donations coming in. Most of the horses I get are underweight and
have health problems, which requires more feed. (Lewis, 2009, p. 4A) Others have horses that are
geriatric or have medical issues. They are kept out of compassion, as not many would want the
financial burden of a horse that is unusable. These horses are even more difficult to find new homes
for and in some instances their quality of life has already passed. Other people refuse to try to make
arrangements for them when they experience a financial hardship and just quit feeding them. They re
emaciated. Some of them, their eyes are glazed over, said Holly Simpson, (Zaborney, 2010, p. 1) of
Arabian Rescue Midwest, who visited 30 plus horses after they were seized by the Humane Society.
One horse was already dead and six others had to be euthanized at the sight, as their state of

Women in Haiti
There is much to know about Haiti when it comes to the conditions as well as the events witnessed in
Haiti during the regime of the Duvaliers. However, little is knows about this country despite its
proximity to the United States. The Duvaliers caused a lot of injustice toward Haitians. In Edwidge
Danticat s Krik? Krak!, originally published in 1991, she brings out the suffering and violence that
were witnessed in Haiti through the resilience of strong women. Josephine s mother in Nineteen
Thirty Seven and Marie in Between the Pool and the Gardenias represent the strength of women,
which plays a significant part in most of the stories in her book; yet, their powers are seen as false and
threatening.
In Nineteen Thirty Seven, Danticat uses Josephine as the narrator, who speaks of her imprisonment for
being a witch, having managed to cross a bloody river when she fled from the Dominican Republic
(DR) to Haiti. At this time close to 20,000 Haitian workers were brutally murdered in the DR. In
Between the Pool and the Gardenias, Danticat introduces the reader to Marie, who picks up a dead
baby in the street and decides to name it Rose. She believes she is the baby s mother and shares secrets
about her life with it.
Defile, who is Josephine s mother in Nineteen Thirty Seven, is serving a jail term for being a witch.
Recalling her mother s arrest, she saw people took her mother away. Her face was bleeding

Scientific Paradigm
In social science, a scientific paradigm refers to a framework of the mostly accepted views about a
certain subject and its research should resume and how it should be done. There is what is known as
conflict paradigm which states that there are two major social groups. These social groups are the
ruling class and the subject class. It further states that the subject class is being ruled and oppressed by
the ruling class. This has led to a conflict of interest between the two classes. The legal and political
institutions are dominated by the ruling class and always look at advancing its interest. This conflict
paradigm makes us view social behavior in one way but another paradigm known as interactionist
makes us view it at a different angle (Miguel 2014).
Natural scientists have a belief that moving from one paradigm to another indicates progress from
false to a true view. Paradigm gains or loses popularity in social sciences but are discharged together
seldom.
There are differences between social science paradigm and several other differences between the
macro and micro level theories of social sciences. Micro level focuses on individuals and their
interactions. A good example is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Analysis Of The Book The New Witch
THE NEW WITCH IN TOWN!!!!!!!
Long ago there was a battle between good and evil. Many lives were taken and many were left
wounded and power less. I was the last survivor! Over 200 years have past and I ve seen friends and
family come and go. Now its different I m getting weaker and sicker so now I need to pass on my
powers to the newest members of our family. That Halloween was he day they got the best gift of all!
The oldest Melinda had the power bend the five elements and teleport. The middle child Misty, got the
power to fast forward and reverse time, and can make clones of her self or others. The youngest
Mandy got the power fly, and also able to read minds. These girls were the new witches in town! I
would have to teach them every ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I said to them, Girls this book is very important it s the Book Of The Craft, it holds every thing super
natural in it. The book also is protected. Evil cannot ever touch the book.
The girls looked at me as if I just gave them a new life. We took out an anathema and pricked our
fingers and each put our bloody finger on the book and as the Earth shook the girls became one and
received all my knowledge and powers. Early the next morning the girl s mother, Melody, went in to
labor. As we got to the hospital my head started spinning my heart fluttered then there was black! As I
slowly gained enough strength to open my eyes, I glanced around the room looking for my family. I
caught a glimpse of Mandy from the corner of my eye.
Come here, I said with a soft weak voice.
What do you need grandma, she said with fear in her eyes.
Get me my diary child.
Ok were is it.
Its at home.
Ok I ll fly there and back real fast just let me get Misty.
As Misty slowly walked in the room I saw another Misty walk past the door before it slammed.
Are you a clone or the real one?
I m the real one grandma the clone is with mom
Ok, I said, will you fluff my pillow?
Sure it s no problem.
Being in the hospital was really insipid. I wish Mandy would hurry up and come back with my diary
so I could wright a little before my time was up. I always had my diary on me and now with out it I
was board.
Ten minuets later Mandy burst threw the doors with a jolt of energy.

My Higher Education
Receiving a higher education has been a lifelong goal for me. All my life I wanted a job saving
animals, as I got older I knew being a veterinarian is my all time life objective. Although, I am
currently a veterinary technician I need to achieve a higher educational background to completely
reach my goal in life. Having a college degree gives me the nostalgia that I long for; being able to say
that I m in college achieving my goals as becoming a veterinarian is gratifying to me. Being a role
model to my daughter is also extremely important; having her see that anything is possible if you put
your mind to it, she will see that life is difficult and there will be constant road blocks but with
determination and hard work success is within ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being a role model for my young daughter is very important to me. Receiving a higher education is
not only important to me, but also to my daughter. A single mother is usually categorized in a negative
light. When one says she s a single mother the first initial thoughts of many are the stereotyping that
the single mother is on welfare, Medicare, and other government aids. Although the article Great
Expectations: Single Mothers in Higher Education, by Diana L.Haleman is about the minority group
of single mothers that live in poverty, I have some of the same issues that these women in the study
had; mother, employee, and a college student. Their educational experiences often provide an
opportunity for disrupting negative expectations directed toward them and also symbolize for the
women the possibility of realizing the hopes and dreams they hold for themselves and their children,
says Haleman, I couldn t agree more with that statement. Being a single mother, a hard worker, and a
college student is not an easy task, but having my daughter grow up watching all my willpower on
completing my goals will show her that no one can hold me down except myself. Money makes the
world go round. There have been many studies showing that having a higher education will lead to a
higher paying job. Although I personally didn t go back to college to give myself the opportunity for a
higher paying job, that is a bonus. In Haleman s article she shows documentation by M. C.

Olaudah Equiano s The Atlantic Slave Trade
The Atlantic slave trade, from its beginnings in the 1500 s to its end in the 1800 s was in itself the
largest forced migration in human history. Slavery was not a new concept to the Atlantic coastal
regions of Africa, but the Europeans were able to take hold of an age old tradition and blow it out of
proportion. Olaudah Equiano s story is especially unique, given the wide array of worldviews he came
in contact with, as well as the continued evolution of his own worldview throughout all of his
experiences.
In the first chapter of Volume I, Equiano goes into amazing detail as to the customs and day to day life
of the way his home community functioned. This provides real insight into how African communities
functioned before significant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Equiano made these associations front and center, as to verify the point of Africans being on the same
intellectual level as the Jews. He even goes so far as to make the suggestion that his people may be
Jewish, by pointing out that the discrepancy in coloring between their races could simply be explained
by having lived in a tropical zone for so long. Equiano supports this by citing research of Spaniards
becoming as dark colored as the native Indians...
Relating the traditions and practices of his native practices to those of Christianity may at first seem
like an isolated incident, but throughout the book he continually tries to make a case for the
similarities between his people and the Europeans. By doing this, he validates the belief of the
abolitionists that Africans are worthy of being treated as if they were humanity, and not as if they were
livestock. He even furthers this belief by enabling the reader to emotionally connect with a wide array
of Africans throughout the story. Such a strategy results in the (probably European) reader being able
to compare the way Europeans and Africans exist on an apples to apples level. This may seem like a
very basic thing to be able to do, but the reader of the time of publication would have a much harder
time as opposed to a modern reader.
Christians were almost

Erickson s Stages
Eric Erickson and Sigmund Freud both believed there are stages in personality development with few
differences. The Erickson theory is composed of eight stages that a normal human will go through
from birth until death or one lifetime. Each of these stages can be related to different characters so it is
easier to relate to. Trust Versus Mistrust The first stage of Erickson s theory is trust versus mistrust.
This stage is from birth to one year old and is based on the baby s environment and the baby s primary
care giver. During this period, the baby builds a feeling of basic trust. If the baby s primary care giver
is consistent, predictable, and reliable, then, most likely the baby will carry this trust into other
relationships, hoping ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this movie Mikey is taught by both fathers to be potty trained. Initiative vs. Guilt Initiative versus
guilt is the third stage of Erickson s theory and applies to children between three and five years of life.
In this stage the child begins emulate the actions of adults and take initiative in creating play
situations. They like to make up stories with their toys (i.e. Ninja turtles, matchbox cars, Barbie and
Ken) they are like to play out roles as what adults do. Basically learning what it means to be an adult.
They also begin to ask question like why so they can find a way to explore the world. Erikson has said
that at this stage they become involved in oedipal struggles a resolve these struggles through social
role identification. A good example of this theory is Michelle Tanner from Full House. Full house was
a television program that aired from 1987 to 1995. In this show, Michelle is a member of a large
family living under one roof in San Francisco. In this program, she is constantly observing the actions
of the adults and causing all kind of mischievous acts that are hilarious and to be expected based on
this theory. Industry (competence) vs. Inferiority The industry versus inferiority is the fourth stage of
this theory, also referred to as the Latency stage and takes place in children from year six to twelve.
During this stage, the children are able to learn, create and to accomplish a number of new skills and
knowledge. This is also

Nationalism And National Identity
Nationalism is a source of modernization and political legitimacy, especially in Latin American
countries such as Nicaragua, Argentina, and Mexico. An inclusive national identity can serve as a
means for the development of belonging, and this globally acclaimed notion of diversity is attractive
for nations struggling to find their footing in the international community. Looking towards the future,
the key to achieving this inclusion is the use of culture, specifically employing music as a tool of
integration. However, the decisive variable here is adolescents. Though these popular music forms
may be the music of the people, they are ultimately dictated by the youth. In modern times, music is
integral for youth as they delve into discourses of identity and equality, so focusing in on marginalized
youth gives the government an opportunity to explore attitudes and national inclusion among
individuals who are in a critical period of development. Even though teens are influenced by their
parents beliefs during childhood before advancing their own views, youth are ultimately the starting
point for incorporating ostracized groups into nationalist discourses because they are the developers
and executors of music movements. Furthermore, the attitudes of young people regarding inclusion
and exclusion provide an indication for the sustainability of such diverse national identities in the
future.
In Nicaragua, discourses of identity became prominent following the success of the

Wimax vs. Long Term Evolution
Wimax vs. LTE:
LTE and Wimax are 4G technologies. LTE is Long Term Evolution project which is been proposed by
3GPP (3rd generation partnership project) which is nothing but collaboration between various
telecommunication companies. So LTE has its background from the GSM technology. Wimax is IEEE
802.16 standard and it s mainly roots in CDMA.
Frequency of operation: LTE operates at lower frequency as compared to wimax. Higher the
frequency of operation, higher the attenuation.
Both wimax and LTE uses OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing). OFDM uses
orthogonal frequencies as carrier frequencies so that there will be no interference between the signals
i.e. it uses the principle of orthogonality. This in turn improves the spectral efficiency.
Multiple Access: Both LTE and wimax uses MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output), which a Space
Division Multiple Access technique. It is a smart technique in which the same signal is transmitted in
different streams to the receiver. The receiver choses the best of the transmitted signal streams and
decodes the signal. It is chosen such a way that, the best quality signal is obtained. So, even the
weaker signals are boosted up by this technique.
Infrastructure: Both LTE and wimax uses ip infrastructure. The flat structure of ip helps the mobile as
well as the base station.
Latency: Latency is less in LTE when compared to wimax.
Range: Theoretically LTE has better rang than wimax.
Speed: speed of LTE is way higher than

Beck s Theory Of Psychodynamic Research
History and Uses
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) grew out of dissatisfaction of certain therapists with traditional
psychoanalysis. Aaron Beck and Albert Ellis were both instrumental in the development of this
approach to psychotherapy (Van Bilsen, p. 7), though Beck, a psychoanalyst, is primarily credited with
its development. Beck did research on depression, in the 1950 s, which was intended to give evidence
in support of the theory that retroflected hostility was at the root of depression, but the research failed
to confirm his hypothesis. As a result, he expanded his research on depression and came to the
realization that depressed subjects held predictably negative thoughts about themselves, the future and

Beck, p. 3) Later in the book, he quotes the Stoic emperor, Marcus Aurelius as saying, If thou are
pained by any external thing, it is not the thing that disturbs thee, but thine own judgement about it.
And it is in thy power to wipe out this judgement now (Marcus Aurelius, quoted in A.T. Beck, p. 263)
In general, the Stoic philosophers believed that we should recognize the difference between things we
have power over and things that we have no power over. They taught that people are best served when
they put their energy into dealing with the things that lie within their control. This idea is succinctly
illustrated in the Serenity Prayer, used in numerous support groups. (Robertson, p. 20) One could say
that Beck s chief accomplishment was to take truths that had been known for centuries and apply them
in a way that was therapeutic. Although Ellis, Beck (and a few others) get a great deal of credit for the
creation of CBT, they freely admit to being influenced, not only by the ancient philosophers, but also
by earlier practitioners of the burgeoning art of psychotherapy. For example, referring to Paul Dubois
work around the turn of the century, Ellenberger said Dubois told of his method of treating phobias.
Emotions, he said, always follow ideas, so the treatment should go to the root, namely, the erroneous
idea the patient has allowed to creep into his mind (Ellenberger,

The Modern High Fat Diet
The modern high fat diet commonly referred to as a ketogenic diet can be achieved in a manner not
unlike a normal carbohydrate diet. Where roasts and salmon and vegetables are not just a normal part
of the diet but essential. Though it is dangerous to start a ketogenic diet without a little bit of research.
This is due to many essential nutrients that we normally source through plants such as wheat, potatoes,
rice, and corn, which are extremely high in carbohydrate. With these foods being too high in
carbohydrates to be a significant portion of one s diet when on a ketogenic diet, one must search for
alternatives. Spinach, avocado, and Swiss chard for instance is a very good source of potassium,
magnesium, and fiber. Let us break this down. Potassium is essential for maintaining a regular
heartbeat. Magnesium is used to make proteins and regulate nerve function. Both magnesium and
potassium deficiency can cause the development of psychological conditions. Finally fiber helps the
body keep itself clean. Though one may find that despite many excellent alternative sources of
required nutrients, the foods that one could prepare may seem very foreign to what one has known. It
is important to know that lacking any of these materials can result in serious side effects. In many
cases it is often necessary to supplement during the initial dietary switch as one takes for granted the
abundant quantities of potassium magnesium and calcium in the common staple diet. So while fat is

U.s. Maritime Transportation Security Act
Massport has enacted several policies and procedures to tighten security and better secure their
various waterfront terminals. These policies include, but may not be limited to:
1. Transportation Worker Identification Credential: Massport has mandated the use of the
Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) and Massport Maritime Credentials for all
workers entering Conley Terminal and Black Falcon Cruise Terminal. Required by the Maritime
Transportation Security Act, TWIC is a threat assessment tool used to vet workers who require
unescorted access to secure maritime facilities, vessels and other critical assets (e.g. cyber systems).
Types of workers include, but may not be limited to, U.S. Coast Guard documented mariners, port and
terminal operators, truckers, equipment maintenance personnel and port security personnel. Following
a successful background check, workers are issued an identification which contains key employee
information including name, a photo and biometric data. Personnel requesting a Massport Maritime
Credential must present a TWIC card at the time of their request. Massachusetts currently supports
five TWIC enrollment locations. They are located in Pocasset, Brockton, Boston, Worcester and

How Did Kraar Build Love On The B-Line Plot
Sarah Barbeau
Mrs. Love Hilliard
Creative Writing
25 January 2017
Love on the B Line Playwriting is made up of three simple ingredients that make up a delicious recipe
for entertainment. The structure/plot of a play, the characters, and the dialogue from these characters
are all essential parts of a play that make it possible to perform. A play must have each of these
ingredients in order to be a successful treat to its audience. Love on the B Line by Adam Kraar excels
at using the main ingredients in order to make the delicious (literature) piece. The plot of Kraar s play

Through dialogue, you can learn more about a character through what they say. The dialogue from
Love on the B Line is quite believable because it is similar to conversations heard from other couples
in other writings. Robbie questions, It s 2 A.M. You think I m going to let you go home alone? (Kraar

numerous times within multiple instances. All Robbie wants is for Marie to stay the night but Marie
refuses because her cat has yet to be fed. Marie often introduces and reintroduces backstory with the
dialogue of her character. She tends to repeat events that had already passed to distract Robbie from
thinking about the present. Marie and Robbie share a common bond within their dialogue that keeps
the audience on edge for what s next. Within the dialogue of the play, the actions of each character
steadily move, creating more entertainment for the audience. From both Robbie and Marie, the
verisimilitude of the play is high because of the realistic actions and thoughts that come within both

Monogamy And Polygamy
In Islam, there are two types of permissible marriages which are monogamy and polygamy.
Monogamy refers to singular marriages whereas polygamy are plural marriages. Polygamy branches
out into two types of plural marriages which are polygyny and polyandry. Polygyny are marriages
between a man with many women while polyandry are marriages between a woman with many men
(Wong and Cox). In Malaysia, plural marriages are lawful and occur as polygyny among Muslims.
Polygynous marriages have sparked debates on whether the principles of these marriages give justice
towards Muslim women. For years, polygyny has been viewed as a free practice, a way for men to
fulfil their sexual desires and contravention of women s rights. Yet, these arguments are misleading
because the principles of polygyny in Malaysia are irrefutably fair to women. This is due to the fact
that the principles of polygyny establish restrictions on the practice of polygyny, abide the nature of
polygyny in Islam and protect women s rights. Contrary to popular belief, ... Show more content on

Based on the Quran, verse 3 of Surah An Nisa serves as a proof that the primary purpose for polygyny
is to protect widows and orphans. This is because the verse was revealed after a war that killed many
Muslim men, leaving their wives and children defenceless (Grant). In the context above, the principles
of polygyny are fair to Muslim women because polygyny is not practised to fulfil men s sexual desire,
rather it is a means of allowing a man to take widows and orphans under their protection. Not only
that, on the same verse in Quran, it states that polygyny is not an obligation to women. Hence, women
can choose to engage in either monogamous or polygynous marriages. To put it briefly, the principles

Being Covered from the Truth in Araby by James Joyce Essay
Being Covered from the Truth in Araby by James Joyce
Araby by James Joyce, is a short story about a young boy trying to find and his search for inner
happiness. The main setting takes place in the boy s neighborhood where he lives with his aunt and
uncle. The sub setting takes place in an Araby or English bazaar, a carnival if you will. In the
neighborhood we find that there is; an uninhabited house that has not been occupied for some time, a
girl, who s referred to as Mangan s sister , whom the boy has a lustful crush on, and a story of a
deceased priest. In the Araby we find a lot of empty booths, along with some hollow characters. The
neighborhood, the Araby, the boy, and other characters in the story have an overall theme ... Show

They would play until fear came upon them of being seen by an adult or passerby. Then they would
stop, and keep themselves hid from the truth of sight , or someone seeing them, in the shadows. If my
uncle was seen tuning the corner we hid in the shadow until we had seen him safely housed. Or if
Mangan s sister came out on the doorstep to call her brother in to his tea we watched her from our
shadow... (para. 3).
The boy also hid his inner self from the truth, like the house, because of his own lust for Mangan s
sister. He, being a boy, did not understand what love was, yet pursued it trying to gain inner happiness.
Each morning he would lie on the floor in the front parlour watching her door. The blind was pulled
down to within an inch of the sash so that I could not be seen. When she came out on the doorstep my
heart leaped (para. 4). He lusts after her thinking that is was pure love.
Later in a conversation between the two they talked about going to the Araby and the boy told her that
if he went he would bring her something. Thinking that he could buy the love of the young flower, he
did not understand that the pure love, to which he clamed to have, could not be bought. Yet, because
of his lust which covered his reason, he went though an extreme amount of stress, getting money from
his uncle and finding a way to get to the bazaar, to be able to buy her a toy. So in search for his inner

Expansion and Risk at Hansson Private Label, Inc.
Evaluating Investment in the Goliath Facility HBS#4021
Vent Consulting takes pleasure in presenting our Hanson Private Label s (HPL) capital expansion
executive summary. We carefully reviewed all applicable case materials and believe we have
quantified your primary risks, benefits, and most attractive course of action.
1) HPL has performed exceptionally well since inception in 1992. Financial statements show that
operating revenues have increased from $503.4M in 2003 to $680.7M in 2007. During this time, gross
operating profit increased by $24.3M. This illustrates that the company is not sacrificing profits for
top level growth. Capital replenishment matches or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additionally, the calculated profitability index of 1.11 suggests the project should be pursued. Note
that the discounted payback period is just under 7 years, 4 years beyond the contractual commitment
under consideration with HPL s largest retail customer.
3) Sensitivity analysis reveals interesting factors, however. Note in the additional tabs:
Ramping up capacity utilization to 85% in 3 years instead of the projected 5 years yields a full 2%
IRR increase.
If aggressive marketing can capture secondary demand from competitors and increase capacity
utilization from 85% to 95% in years 4 through 10, IRR is increased to 14.8%.
The project is very sensitive to unit selling price. If expected annual growth in sales price rises from
2% to just 3.5%, IRR rises a full 6.7% to 17.8%.
The project is also very sensitive to commodity costs. A small .5% increase in expected inflation from
1.0% to 1.5% annual raw material costs reduce baseline IRR calculations to 9.5%, making the project
unattractive compared to the 9.38% discount rate.
Improved capital planning yields expected improved project returns. The last tab illustrates a potential
improvement of 2.5% IRR.
Given this information, Vent Consulting has identified 3 courses of action (COA): 1) Accept the
capital expansion proposal as written by Mr. Gates 2) Accept the retailer s 3 year contract, but reduce

Curse of Dimensionality Makes CBIR System is Necessary...
This is known as Curse of Dimensionality , which states that the number of examples necessary to
reliable generalization grows exponentially with the number of dimensions. Learn ability necessitates
dimensionality reduction, which is the process of reducing the number of random features under
consideration during image retrieval (Roweis and Saul, 2000).
In large multimedia databases, high dimensional representation is computationally intensive and most
users are unwilling to wait for results for a long time. Thus, for storage and retrieval efficiency
concerns, dimensionality reduction in CBIR systems is necessary. Example of these techniques
includes Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and Linear ...

1.3.4. Indexing
When manipulating massive image databases, a good indexing is necessary. Processing every single
item in a database, when performing queries, is extremely inefficient and slow. When working with
images, the feature vectors are used as the basis of the index. Popular multi dimensional indexing
methods include the R tree and the R* tree algorithms (Long et al., 2003). The Self Organizing Map
(SOM) is also one of the indexing structures (Laaksonen et al., 2000). Usage of indexing techniques
during searching reduces processing time and thus retrieves images quickly.
1.4. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF CBIR
Research and development issues in CBIR cover a range of topics which shares with mainstream
image processing and information retrieval. Some of the most important are:
to understand image users needs and information seeking behaviour
to identify suitable ways of describing image content
to extract features from raw images
to provide compact storage for large image databases
to match query and stored images in a way that reflects human similarity decisions
to efficiently access stored images by content
to provide usable human interfaces to CBIR systems
A wide range of possible applications for CBIR technology has been identified (Gudivada and
Raghavan, 1995). This section presents

Paul Johnson held Charles Darwin in very high regard, calling him a gentleman scientist many times
throughout his analysis. Overall he saw Darwin as inquisitive and conscientious of the world around
him; often not publishing anything that would cause an uproar in the public or the church. Johnson
also praises Darwin s ability to work in many different fields of science going as far at to call Darwin
a shavnt, or someone with an extreme ability and intelligence who often times burdened with a severe
mental handicap. It is unknown whether Darwin was, in fact, a shavant or not Johnson however

derived from Darwin s friends, (103). In the Descent of Man, Darwin had several racial and sexist
slurs that were highly unpopular to the point that his readers wrote him several letters asking him to
remove them. His generalizations were so that he had almost no concrete evidence to support his work
other than what was in uncivilized and backward cultures and history. Another attributing factor to the
failure of Decent is that he had no clear argument or direction of thoughts in this work as opposed to
Origins which had a clear thesis and concentrated argument throughout. But the most glaring failure
was the title. The Descent of Man implies that the book would be about humans; when in reality there
were only two chapters on the subject. The largest portion of the book was lower classes of the animal
kingdom, for which he had boundless knowledge. His lack of knowledge in anthropology is very
apparent in this. Even with a surgeon for a father he failed to understand basic human anatomy and
psychological makeup. This lack of understanding ultimately weakened his book to the point that it
would have failed if Oregon had not been published

Football Programs Should Have Athletic Scholarships
In my opinion, all football programs should have Athletic scholarships regardless of division. They all
are considered NCAA athletes and all abide by the same rules and regulations. Football is one of
America s favorite pass times and through this sport many athletes have been able to attend Colleges
and Universities, all over The United States, for free. Although there are currently 72,788 National
Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Football players, only the few that have the opportunity to
play Division 1 football are eligible to receive these full athletic scholarships also known as full rides .
Division 2 is an assortment of more than 300 NCAA colleges and universities that provide thousands
of student athletes the opportunity to compete at a high level of scholarship athletics. Some Division 2
schools also give their athletes full scholarships but these cases are rare, instead, they give partial
athletic scholarships to help lighten the load. Athletes that play Division 3 football are often seen as
playing For the love of the game or Love of completion and receive no sort of athletic scholarship for
playing a college sport. Players that decide to take the Junior College or JUCO route are playing, more
times than not, to attract the attention of Division 1 coaches in order to seize the opportunity of
attending college for free. The differences among the divisions emerge primarily in how schools
choose to fund their athletics programs. Division 1 is the

Beauty, and to outline what alcoholism is, the causes and effects of alcoholism, and how to get help if
you or someone you know is an alcoholic.
B. Portrayal of Alcoholism in Black Beauty
In the novel Black Beauty, by Anna Sewell, alcoholism is portrayed as an evil that leads to cruel
behaviour. It showcased how drunkenness leads to the downfall of Reuben Smith, his family, and
Black Beauty. Beauty describes Reuben as a faithful and valuable man, gentle and clear in his
management of horses when he is sober. He would not drink for weeks or months, then he would have

The severity of this dependence varies between individuals. Roughly 4% of the Canadian population,
over the age of 15, are suffering from an alcohol dependency or are alcoholics. The highest percentage
of these drinking problems are among people between the ages of 20 and 24. Roughly one fifth of
Canada s alcoholics have admitted that financial and job related problems have been caused by their
drinking ( Alcohol in Canada, 2016).
D. Causes and Effects
The effects associated with alcohol are produced by the ethanol in the alcohol. The severity of these
effects is reflected by the concentration of alcohol in an individual s blood, which is dictated by the
amount of alcohol ingested, the volume of blood, the individual s metabolism, and amount of time
since ingestion. In large doses, alcohol acts as a depressant of the central nervous system. A blood
alcohol level of 0.1% affects some of the motor areas of the brain associated with speech, balance and
manual dexterity. A blood alcohol level of 0.2% depresses all motor functions and the area concerned
with emotions is depressed. At a blood alcohol level of 0.45% the entire section of the brain that
handles perception is depressed and the individual becomes comatose. At a blood alcohol level of
0.7% the parts of the brain that control the heartbeat and breathing are depressed and the individual

Cash Management Modeling
Cash Management Modeling, Excel Assignment 3
Cash Management Modeling, Excel Assignment 3
Cash flow forecasts are a powerful management tool to help identify future deficits or surpluses in
liquidity. The cash flow forecast shows the total expected outflows and inflows during a given period;
i.e. a year. It is vitally important that this budget is prepared so the organization is aware of shortages
and surpluses during the year. These can help the business spot cash problems and cash opportunities.
A known cash shortage can be planned for and resolved proactively verses reactively. It would be
wrong to assume that if the organization is in surplus that it does not have a problem. Idle cash means

When showing data for different periods of time, such as the quarterly sales forecasts, it s horizontal
rather than vertical. Other data, such as the list of raw materials needed for a product, will be easier to
use when it s set up vertically. Doing this simply works better as we use Excel 2013.
Borrowing Effects; Cash Budgets. When the company pays the balance of short term borrowing this
will decrease available cash used for investing. Determining the amount of current borrowing and
current investing is the most complex part of this cash budget. We have already calculated current
borrowing, but because we are now considering investments and interest, the formula will need to be
changed. For current borrowing, the logic can be explained this way; if the unadjusted cash balance is
less than the minimum acceptable cash, then borrow enough to bring this balance to the minimum.
However, if the firm has some investments, reduce the amount of borrowing by an equal amount of
the investments. If the adjusted cash balance is greater than the minimum and the firm has pervious
borrowing, then use the cash above minimum to reduce the outstanding balance. Writing a formula for
this requires the use of the nested IF statement (Mayes, 2012, p. 89).
Conclusion. The cash flow forecast is produced by reference to the income and expenditure budget,
which serve as a basis for adjusting

The Dangers of Tanning Essay
Spring is finally here, and Spring Break and the Senior Prom are around corner. The teenagers and the

women that tan skin is a sign of youth and sex appeal. Some people go to the tanning salons and
others spend hours outside in the sun to achieve the sun goddess look. Many don t realize the dangers
that come with the sun or a box with light bulbs that has more UVA radiation than the sun does. From

which gives off thirteen times more radiation than the sun. It s easy for some people, who have read
the facts, to stop tanning in tanning beds, but others have fallen prey to it and they won t stop because
it s too enjoyable. Research has found that tanning beds seems affects more than just the skin. During
tanning sessions, exposure UV light seems to elevate people s mood and may be addictive. Those who
are addictive are called tanorexia. (Linke) According to the American Academy of Dermatology

do, they have symptoms of withdrawal including nausea and jitters. An infrequent tanner experiences
no withdrawal symptoms. People who are addictive can t stop, and are speeding straight towards
danger. Twenty minutes in a tanning bed is like spending a whole day at the beach with no sun block.
UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin tissue, changing the DNA structure. Scientists discovered that
tanning beds are as dangerous as arsenic and mustard gas. (Siddons) People tan

Dual Language Argument Paper
We learned in our text that the development of language is a complicated process that involves
phonemes, morphemes, syntactic development among several other factors (Siegler, DeLoache,
Eisenberg Saffran, 2014, p. 218). Proper and effective development of these language skills has been
shown to have a critical learning period that enables successful fluency of a language; this period
usually occurs between the ages of 5 and puberty (Siegler et al., 2014, p. 220). I believe that this
critical period is the backbone of the argument against bilingual education. Proponents of this
argument believe that the sooner a child is immersed in the new language, the better off they will be
with regards to mechanics and use of that language.
The problem with this argument, as our text points out, is that modern research does not support this

This model supports the use of both the native language and the new language within the daily

and negatively impacts bilingual education because of the high degree of emphasis that is placed on
standardized testing. The weight of standardized testing that is felt from the state all the way down to
the classroom level has forced curriculum to focus on the passing of these tests. Because bilingual
students must take the standardized test in English, this has caused a shift in the landscape of bilingual
education. Teachers of bilingual students are abandoning the DL method in favor of a more English
only environment as a means to help students pass standardized tests (Ray, 2008). This negates the
purpose of bilingual education and decreases the benefits that these students receive while learning in
a dual language

Negotiating Fine Lines between Women’s Work and Women’s...
Negotiating Fine Lines between Women s Work and Women s Worth
A woman s place is in the home. She should have babies and raise them well. Her job is to keep the
house clean and to take care of her husband. Although in today s society this is no longer an
acceptable classification, parts of it still exist within the minds of many. For example, the majority of
men and women in the United States would say that they are against inequality between men and
women; yet, the majority of women in America are living with their husband s last name. This practice
literally used to symbolize the ownership of the woman by the man, but people today fail to see the
connection between this tradition and the past. This inability to see the ... Show more content on

This is by far her most important technique as she uses narration, description and repetition to
overwhelm the reader and help them really feel what McBride s character did. The reason she wants
the readers to truly understand the emotional battle the women she describes went through is because
her goal is to reveal the reasons behind their low self esteem in the early 1900 s. Those reasons are
shown to have been largely a result of their work being demeaned as unimportant compared to the
man s.
McBride s essay is therefore intriguing and eye opening because she sparks the reader s interest by
contrasting common everyday beliefs about what is known as women s work and by provoking a
sense of sympathy and longing for more details about the plight of women in the early 1900 s. She
begins her essay using a logical appeal to provide background information about her subject. This is
useful to the reader as he/she attempts to grasp the reasons for which an argument is being made about
the inequality of women in a society where it is politically correct to say that it no longer exists.
McBride s opening historical paragraphs make today s reader wonder about what the rest of the essay
will contain and what sort of inequality she is going to focus on. The bulk of McBride s essay is
written in a narrative tone

The Legalization Of Marijuana For Marijuana
The legalization of marijuana in America
Overview
Issue
The new events of legalizing marijuana for recreational use has increased controversy in the United
States, those against it say it was bad enough before when it was merely allowed for medicinal use and
now that these new laws and rules are really infuriating those who are against it. However on the flip
side people are also arguing that now that it is allowed for recreational use people it will lessen crime
rates, related to selling and buying drugs, and have a positive effect on the culture and society.
History
The craze for marijuana started, in America, in the early 1600 s, at a point there was even a law passed
that required every famer to grow marijuana, it was not until the 1900 s that the growing and usage of
cannabis started escalating too quickly and in the 1930 s increase in crime and violence linked to using
marijuana caused 29 states to outlaw the use of marijuana, however in the 50 s to the 60 s a new hippy
culture had started and marijuana, and other drugs, were a large part of the culture. This caused new
laws to be placed, mandatory and stricter sentencing rules and larger fines. However in the 1970 s
there were political changes trying to decriminalize the possession of the drug for non medical
purposes as well as legalizing it for medical purposes. Then during the 1980 s due to large number of
protesting parents and campaigns from other parties, the government was compelled to start a war on

The Change Of Size In Alice s Adventures In Wonderland
In Alice s Adventures in Wonderland, Alice changes size constantly. When she first arrives in
Wonderland, she s too big to make it through the little door into the exquisite garden; after she drinks
from the mysterious bottle, she s too small to reach the key. Once she eats the special cake, she s
enormous, but the White Rabbit s fan makes her small again. In the rabbit s house, another bottle of
mystery cordial makes her swell up and get stuck in the room; pebbles thrown in the window turn to
cakes and eating them shrinks her. At this point, Alice meets the Caterpillar, who teaches her to use
pieces of mushroom to control her size nibbling a bit from one side to get larger and a bit from the
other side to get smaller. Just when we think

Essay on The Resistance to Change
Think back to the first day of any class one was allowed to choose the seating of their choice. The
second day, everyone decides to sit in the same seating as the previous day. The third day comes along
and as one walks into the class room, one notices that someone is sitting in their seat. The sensation of
being thrown off balance takes over along with being uncomfortable for the remainder of the day. The
following questions then arise: why does this phenomenon occur? Yukl states Resistance to change is
a common phenomenon for individuals and organizations (Yuki, 285). Let s now turn our attention at
the case study that was presented by Almah J. Joseph Dilemma at the Public Service Department.

Through his discovery of three letters, he begins to notice that there actually are some inconsistencies
within the department and decided to take action. As a leader, there are responsibilities that should not
be neglected. No matter how small the complaints are, as a leader, they are to take action and
investigate the claim. If upper management does not take any action, then who will? In Alex s case, he
under planned the situation. In order to bring change in an organization, there has to be well thought
out planning. He must consider asking questions such as: what is the trade offs between his loyalty to
the department as well as the governor, and the public interest? One must also look at the ethical
perspective of if the is taking the right action or not. As the commissioner of the public service
department, it is his responsibility to reassure that the public is receiving the most efficient, honest,
fare service that could be provided through the department. It is also his responsibility to make sure
there is no malpractice within the organization. If anyone is entitled to a right, than he needs to make
sure that right is being provided. It is the ethical action to take.
The way that Alex took action seemed to be under planned due to the lack of cognitive analysis on the
situation. He decided to make a call to a trusted colleague who was

My Favorite Season
Fall, one of my favorite times of the year. Filled with changing colors, special holidays, pumpkins, and
the best thing in the world, apple cider doughnuts. Every year me and my family spend one day to
rake all the leaves together. We usually only do it that once and we almost never finish. But we enjoy
ourselves all the same.
This occurs on the same day every year, the day we go to the pumpkin farm. That day always started
early. We would wake up, quickly get ready, then drive to Burnt Toast for breakfast. Just sitting there
talking, and eating for awhile. After that we d get back up and drive to Gobert s to begin the fun.
Only staying a little past lunch we would laugh, and play, and eat, and pick out our pumpkin. Then
right before leaving we would stand in line for half an hour. Just to get a dozen fresh apple cider
doughnuts. Even though they had the same doughnuts inside the main store with a shorter wait. On the
way home we divided all the doughnuts up between us. I always ate mine the quickest, dad was
usually second, and my mom and Noah, my brother, both only ever ate one of theirs and saved the rest
for later. Which Noah always ended up giving me one of his extras anyway. Once home it was time to
work , so we banded together to rake the leaves that are always overflowing in our yard. Don t get me
wrong we would work for a little bit, but then we d just end up making the biggest pile of leaves we
could, so Noah could jump in. Which caused my mom to demand family

Essay on Cultures Influences on Art
Cultures Influences on Art With changes in culture, come changes in art. Throughout history, artworks
have been produced as an imitation of the culture and society in which they were created. The cultural
frame examines the meaning of artworks in relation to the social perspective of the community from
which it grows. A reflection can be seen in Manet s realist artwork of Olympia, and similarly, Umberto
Boccioni s Unique forms of Continuity and Space reflects different beliefs and conventions merely as
a result of societal changes. Pop Art works such a Andy Warhol s Marilyn x 100 and Post modern

These particular artists chose to focus their interests on worldly, real, raw and pure subjects. They
wished to create simple art, painting exactly what they saw and how they saw it. Among these artists
was Edouard Manet. Manet was known as a rebel for his time most likely because of his rebellion
against Classic and Romantic traditions and his confronting and stirring painting of Olympia. Manet
takes Titian s Venus of Urbino as his model, yet instead of following accepted French art practices of
depicting historical, biblical or mythical themes, he paints a woman of his time. The subject is a real
female courtesan lying nude on a bed in a provocative position, with one hand covering her genitalia.
He paints in his own manner of quick, rough, visible brushstrokes and replaces deep perspective with
two flat frames. Olympia was a very confronting artwork to society as although many middle and
upper class gentlemen of the time were frequent customers of courtesans and prostitutes, but being
confronted by one on a canvas in a gallery was something different. Manet has broken away from
traditional practices of art in the 1860s, and created a unique realist artwork depicting a common
scene.
Dramatic events such as the Industrial Revolution, World Wars, and changes in the social world,
influenced new ideas and technology which revolutionized the way artworks

Sexual Identity And Cultural Identity In Mosquita Y Mari
Mosquita y Mari is a film about two sophomore girls who begin a friendship, and quickly develop
intimate feelings for one another. Main character Yolanda is a straight A, 4.0 GPA student who has the
goal of going to college in the United States as her main priority. Upon starting high school, Yolanda s
two best friends from middle school drift away from her, meeting new crowds and begin consuming
marijuana and alcohol regularly. Unable to ask her parents for advice due to the growing tension in
their marriage, Yolanda opts to start a new friendship with a neighbor and classmate by the name of
Mari. Mari is a rebel that does poorly in school, skips classes and sells shop flyers to help her mother
pay bills after the death of her father. Like many second generation Mexican immigrants in the United
States, Yolanda and Mari experience different cultural identities on a day to day basis. A cultural
identity is the feeling of belonging to a group of people. A majority of second generation immigrants
experience American cultural identities in public and Mexican cultural identities in the household.
Individual conflicts may arise when an individual tries to integrate a new culture into their lives,
which can create stress and identity issues. One identity issue that many immigrants struggle with is
the development of a sexual identity, also known as how a person views themselves in relation to
whom they are attracted to. Second generation immigrants to America fail to explore

Overview of US Tax Credits
U.S tax credits
Introduction
A tax credit refers to the sum deducted from the gross amount that a taxpayer owes the state (Tax
credits, 2012). A tax is usually granted for different types of taxes. Some of these include the income
tax, VAT or property tax. It may also come because of recognition of taxes already paid for the
purpose of encouraging investment as well as other behaviors. Concerning some systems, tax credits
are usually refundable such that they can exceed the relevant. Most of the tax systems usually grant
tax credits to individuals as well as business (Tax credits, 2012). These grants always vary by type of
credit. Many tax systems the taxes paid directly as credits but not prepayments. These are cases where
the tax credits are invariably refundable (Hammond, 2010).
The US tax system grants various types of low income tax credits (Tax credits, 2012). These include
earned income credit, credit for the disabled and elderly, retirement savings credit and mortgage
interest credit. Earned income credit is a refundable credit granted for a fraction of income earned by
an individual. Credit for the disabled and elderly is a non refundable credit which is up to 1125 US
dollars. Retirement saving credits is a nonrefundable credit which is up to 50 percent of IRAS
contributions (Hammond, 2010). Lastly, Mortgage interest credit is a non refundable credit which is
usually limited to 2000 US dollars. Apart from the tax credit on low incomes, the US tax system also

Margaret Atwood s Penelopiad
Humanist and feminist, Margaret Atwood retells the famous myth, The Odyssey, in Penelopiad.
Atwood creates voices for the women who did not have an important role in Homer s epic poems. The
writer also creates two levels of myths: the Homeric myth of faithful Penelope and cultural myths
about women as either submissive and domestic, or as duplicitous schemers (9 Homwells). In
Penelopiad, Penelope retells the story in her point of view and although she is the main narrator, the
twelve maids often interject their side of the story. Throughout the work Penelope creates herself as
the victim of society and is found, often times, contradicting herself.
As the novel unravels the reader finds that Penelope is not a reliable source since most ... Show more

... The more thickly they laid it on, the more costly were the gifts they expected from me. I always
complied. Even an obvious fabrication is some comfort when you have few others (Atwood 49).
Atwood shows how narratives may be altered or constructed differently depending on the audience.
While, Penelope s payment for the altered stories shows her desire to only believe the best about
Odysseus. However, the maids create Odysseus s character to be more scandalous and the complete
opposite, when compared to Penelope. Their narrative suggests that he doesn t seem to be bolting back
to Ithaca. Demonstrating, there is an alternative version of the story, where Odysseus is less admirable
and irresponsible. Also, through the maids, Atwood is able to depict women being submissive to men,
in a more rasping point of view. In particular, when Telemachus is born the maids state, We were his
pets and his toy things, mock sisters, his tiny companions. ... He saw us as rightfully his, for whatever
purpose (Atwood 42). Atwood shows that at a very early age women were domesticated and taught to
be submissive. As for the maids, they are telling the reader that they had no other choice but to obey in

Prenatal And Postnatal Health Care
With complaints of inadequate maternity health care services in newspapers and social media on the
rise, the issue of Ireland s poor services for women before and after birth has become an important
topic. Some health care officials believe there are already safe and effective services and staffing
levels implemented in prenatal and postnatal health care. Even government officials feel that there is
an abundant amount of government assistance services available for prenatal and postnatal women.
These views are predominately based on the data that Ireland has one of the lowest maternal and
perinatal mortality rates in the world (Larkin et al. 98). In a newspaper article by Sinéad Redmond,
she points out that in March of 2014, figures revealed that not a single maternity hospital in the
Republic of Ireland had staffing levels of midwife to women ratios that [met] international safety
standards ( Ireland s Maternity Units ). In a study conducted by Larkin, Begley, and Davane, it was
also found that women often felt alone and unsupported, and Some women would not have another
baby due to their childbirth experiences (98). Women who wish to be pregnant in Ireland are unhappy
with their prenatal and postnatal experiences on the account of inadequate health care services,
including job and government assistance. I will argue that the government and health care system in
the Republic of Ireland should work together to solve these problems. The lack of attentiveness to

  • 2. Essay about Slaughtering for the Humanness of Horses Slaughtering for the Humanness of Horses The closing of slaughterhouses in the United States for horses has resulted in inhumane treatment and gross neglect for thousands of horses. Congressmen, lobbyists, activists, actors, and every day people have petitioned for these death traps to be destroyed, all for the benefit of the horse. The horse, who cannot speak, can only react to his surroundings. The ones to be benefited are the people who see this as cruel, and inhumane; to give them a clear conscious, because they feel endeared to this animal. I, too, am endeared to this animal, but understand that the horse has been put in, an all too often, precarious situation, that even death, cannot come quick enough. Without slaughter ... That s an increase of over 1800 percent from the previous year, when slaughterhouses closed. Horse rescue farms rely on donations, whether in the form of food, labor, or money, to make ends meet. It s always a struggle, (Myers), who owns Sunshine Acres rescue ranch, said. It s expensive to keep horses, and there aren t enough donations coming in. Most of the horses I get are underweight and have health problems, which requires more feed. (Lewis, 2009, p. 4A) Others have horses that are geriatric or have medical issues. They are kept out of compassion, as not many would want the financial burden of a horse that is unusable. These horses are even more difficult to find new homes for and in some instances their quality of life has already passed. Other people refuse to try to make arrangements for them when they experience a financial hardship and just quit feeding them. They re emaciated. Some of them, their eyes are glazed over, said Holly Simpson, (Zaborney, 2010, p. 1) of Arabian Rescue Midwest, who visited 30 plus horses after they were seized by the Humane Society. Analysis Of Edwidge Danticat s Krik Vy Nguyen Dr. Lisa Muir ENG III 9 December 2015 Women in Haiti There is much to know about Haiti when it comes to the conditions as well as the events witnessed in Haiti during the regime of the Duvaliers. However, little is knows about this country despite its proximity to the United States. The Duvaliers caused a lot of injustice toward Haitians. In Edwidge Danticat s Krik? Krak!, originally published in 1991, she brings out the suffering and violence that were witnessed in Haiti through the resilience of strong women. Josephine s mother in Nineteen Thirty Seven and Marie in Between the Pool and the Gardenias represent the strength of women, which plays a significant part in most of the stories in her book; yet, their powers are seen as false and threatening. In Nineteen Thirty Seven, Danticat uses Josephine as the narrator, who speaks of her imprisonment for being a witch, having managed to cross a bloody river when she fled from the Dominican Republic (DR) to Haiti. At this time close to 20,000 Haitian workers were brutally murdered in the DR. In Between the Pool and the Gardenias, Danticat introduces the reader to Marie, who picks up a dead baby in the street and decides to name it Rose. She believes she is the baby s mother and shares secrets about her life with it. Defile, who is Josephine s mother in Nineteen Thirty Seven, is serving a jail term for being a witch. • 4. Scientific Paradigm In social science, a scientific paradigm refers to a framework of the mostly accepted views about a certain subject and its research should resume and how it should be done. There is what is known as conflict paradigm which states that there are two major social groups. These social groups are the ruling class and the subject class. It further states that the subject class is being ruled and oppressed by the ruling class. This has led to a conflict of interest between the two classes. The legal and political institutions are dominated by the ruling class and always look at advancing its interest. This conflict paradigm makes us view social behavior in one way but another paradigm known as interactionist makes us view it at a different angle (Miguel 2014). Natural scientists have a belief that moving from one paradigm to another indicates progress from false to a true view. A single mother is usually categorized in a negative light. When one says she s a single mother the first initial thoughts of many are the stereotyping that the single mother is on welfare, Medicare, and other government aids. Although the article Great Expectations: Single Mothers in Higher Education, by Diana L.Haleman is about the minority group of single mothers that live in poverty, I have some of the same issues that these women in the study had; mother, employee, and a college student. Their educational experiences often provide an opportunity for disrupting negative expectations directed toward them and also symbolize for the women the possibility of realizing the hopes and dreams they hold for themselves and their children, says Haleman, I couldn t agree more with that statement. Being a single mother, a hard worker, and a college student is not an easy task, but having my daughter grow up watching all my willpower on completing my goals will show her that no one can hold me down except myself. Slavery was not a new concept to the Atlantic coastal regions of Africa, but the Europeans were able to take hold of an age old tradition and blow it out of proportion. Olaudah Equiano s story is especially unique, given the wide array of worldviews he came in contact with, as well as the continued evolution of his own worldview throughout all of his experiences. He even goes so far as to make the suggestion that his people may be Jewish, by pointing out that the discrepancy in coloring between their races could simply be explained by having lived in a tropical zone for so long. Equiano supports this by citing research of Spaniards becoming as dark colored as the native Indians... Relating the traditions and practices of his native practices to those of Christianity may at first seem like an isolated incident, but throughout the book he continually tries to make a case for the similarities between his people and the Europeans. By doing this, he validates the belief of the abolitionists that Africans are worthy of being treated as if they were humanity, and not as if they were livestock. He even furthers this belief by enabling the reader to emotionally connect with a wide array of Africans throughout the story. Such a strategy results in the (probably European) reader being able to compare the way Europeans and Africans exist on an apples to apples level. This may seem like a very basic thing to be able to do, but the reader of the time of publication would have a much harder time as opposed to a modern reader. Christians were almost ... The Erickson theory is composed of eight stages that a normal human will go through from birth until death or one lifetime. This stage is from birth to one year old and is based on the baby s environment and the baby s primary care giver. During this period, the baby builds a feeling of basic trust. An inclusive national identity can serve as a means for the development of belonging, and this globally acclaimed notion of diversity is attractive for nations struggling to find their footing in the international community. Looking towards the future, the key to achieving this inclusion is the use of culture, specifically employing music as a tool of integration. However, the decisive variable here is adolescents. Though these popular music forms may be the music of the people, they are ultimately dictated by the youth. In modern times, music is integral for youth as they delve into discourses of identity and equality, so focusing in on marginalized youth gives the government an opportunity to explore attitudes and national inclusion among individuals who are in a critical period of development. Even though teens are influenced by their parents beliefs during childhood before advancing their own views, youth are ultimately the starting point for incorporating ostracized groups into nationalist discourses because they are the developers and executors of music movements. Furthermore, the attitudes of young people regarding inclusion and exclusion provide an indication for the sustainability of such diverse national identities in the future. In Nicaragua, discourses of identity became prominent following the success of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Wimax vs. Long Term Evolution Wimax vs. LTE: LTE and Wimax are 4G technologies. LTE is Long Term Evolution project which is been proposed by 3GPP (3rd generation partnership project) which is nothing but collaboration between various telecommunication companies. So LTE has its background from the GSM technology. Wimax is IEEE 802.16 standard and it s mainly roots in CDMA. Frequency of operation: LTE operates at lower frequency as compared to wimax. Higher the frequency of operation, higher the attenuation. Both wimax and LTE uses OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing). OFDM uses orthogonal frequencies as carrier frequencies so that there will be no interference between the signals i.e. it uses the principle of orthogonality. This in turn improves the spectral efficiency. Multiple Access: Both LTE and wimax uses MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output), which a Space Division Multiple Access technique. It is a smart technique in which the same signal is transmitted in different streams to the receiver. The receiver choses the best of the transmitted signal streams and decodes the signal. It is chosen such a way that, the best quality signal is obtained. So, even the weaker signals are boosted up by this technique. Infrastructure: Both LTE and wimax uses ip infrastructure. Aaron Beck and Albert Ellis were both instrumental in the development of this approach to psychotherapy (Van Bilsen, p. 7), though Beck, a psychoanalyst, is primarily credited with its development. Beck did research on depression, in the 1950 s, which was intended to give evidence in support of the theory that retroflected hostility was at the root of depression, but the research failed to confirm his hypothesis. As a result, he expanded his research on depression and came to the realization that depressed subjects held predictably negative thoughts about themselves, the future and the world around ... And it is in thy power to wipe out this judgement now (Marcus Aurelius, quoted in A.T. Beck, p. 263) In general, the Stoic philosophers believed that we should recognize the difference between things we have power over and things that we have no power over. They taught that people are best served when they put their energy into dealing with the things that lie within their control. This idea is succinctly illustrated in the Serenity Prayer, used in numerous support groups. (Robertson, p. 20) One could say that Beck s chief accomplishment was to take truths that had been known for centuries and apply them in a way that was therapeutic. Although Ellis, Beck (and a few others) get a great deal of credit for the creation of CBT, they freely admit to being influenced, not only by the ancient philosophers, but also by earlier practitioners of the burgeoning art of psychotherapy. Where roasts and salmon and vegetables are not just a normal part of the diet but essential. Though it is dangerous to start a ketogenic diet without a little bit of research. This is due to many essential nutrients that we normally source through plants such as wheat, potatoes, rice, and corn, which are extremely high in carbohydrate. Magnesium is used to make proteins and regulate nerve function. Both magnesium and potassium deficiency can cause the development of psychological conditions. Finally fiber helps the body keep itself clean. Though one may find that despite many excellent alternative sources of required nutrients, the foods that one could prepare may seem very foreign to what one has known. Polygyny are marriages between a man with many women while polyandry are marriages between a woman with many men (Wong and Cox). Financial statements show that operating revenues have increased from $503.4M in 2003 to $680.7M in 2007. During this time, gross operating profit increased by $24.3M. This illustrates that the company is not sacrificing profits for top level growth. Capital replenishment matches or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Additionally, the calculated profitability index of 1.11 suggests the project should be pursued. Note that the discounted payback period is just under 7 years, 4 years beyond the contractual commitment under consideration with HPL s largest retail customer. 3) Sensitivity analysis reveals interesting factors, however. Note in the additional tabs: Ramping up capacity utilization to 85% in 3 years instead of the projected 5 years yields a full 2% IRR increase. If aggressive marketing can capture secondary demand from competitors and increase capacity utilization from 85% to 95% in years 4 through 10, IRR is increased to 14.8%. The project is very sensitive to unit selling price. If expected annual growth in sales price rises from 2% to just 3.5%, IRR rises a full 6.7% to 17.8%. The project is also very sensitive to commodity costs. A small .5% increase in expected inflation from 1.0% to 1.5% annual raw material costs reduce baseline IRR calculations to 9.5%, making the project unattractive compared to the 9.38% discount rate. Improved capital planning yields expected improved project returns. The last tab illustrates a potential improvement of 2.5% IRR. Given this information, Vent Consulting has identified 3 courses of action (COA): 1) Accept the capital expansion proposal as written by Mr. Gates 2) Accept the retailer s 3 year contract, but reduce capital risk by ... • 24. Curse of Dimensionality Makes CBIR System is Necessary... This is known as Curse of Dimensionality , which states that the number of examples necessary to reliable generalization grows exponentially with the number of dimensions. Learn ability necessitates dimensionality reduction, which is the process of reducing the number of random features under consideration during image retrieval (Roweis and Saul, 2000). In large multimedia databases, high dimensional representation is computationally intensive and most users are unwilling to wait for results for a long time. Thus, for storage and retrieval efficiency concerns, dimensionality reduction in CBIR systems is necessary. Example of these techniques includes Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and Linear ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 1.3.4. Indexing When manipulating massive image databases, a good indexing is necessary. Processing every single item in a database, when performing queries, is extremely inefficient and slow. When working with images, the feature vectors are used as the basis of the index. Popular multi dimensional indexing methods include the R tree and the R* tree algorithms (Long et al., 2003). The Self Organizing Map (SOM) is also one of the indexing structures (Laaksonen et al., 2000). Usage of indexing techniques during searching reduces processing time and thus retrieves images quickly. 1.4. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF CBIR Research and development issues in CBIR cover a range of topics which shares with mainstream image processing and information retrieval. Some of the most important are: to understand image users needs and information seeking behaviour to identify suitable ways of describing image content to extract features from raw images to provide compact storage for large image databases to match query and stored images in a way that reflects human similarity decisions to efficiently access stored images by content to provide usable human interfaces to CBIR systems A wide range of possible applications for CBIR technology has been identified (Gudivada and Raghavan, 1995). Overall he saw Darwin as inquisitive and conscientious of the world around him; often not publishing anything that would cause an uproar in the public or the church. Johnson also praises Darwin s ability to work in many different fields of science going as far at to call Darwin a shavnt, or someone with an extreme ability and intelligence who often times burdened with a severe mental handicap. His generalizations were so that he had almost no concrete evidence to support his work other than what was in uncivilized and backward cultures and history. Another attributing factor to the failure of Decent is that he had no clear argument or direction of thoughts in this work as opposed to Origins which had a clear thesis and concentrated argument throughout. But the most glaring failure was the title. The Descent of Man implies that the book would be about humans; when in reality there were only two chapters on the subject. The largest portion of the book was lower classes of the animal kingdom, for which he had boundless knowledge. His lack of knowledge in anthropology is very apparent in this. They all are considered NCAA athletes and all abide by the same rules and regulations. Football is one of America s favorite pass times and through this sport many athletes have been able to attend Colleges and Universities, all over The United States, for free. Although there are currently 72,788 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Football players, only the few that have the opportunity to play Division 1 football are eligible to receive these full athletic scholarships also known as full rides . Division 2 is an assortment of more than 300 NCAA colleges and universities that provide thousands of student athletes the opportunity to compete at a high level of scholarship athletics. Some Division 2 schools also give their athletes full scholarships but these cases are rare, instead, they give partial athletic scholarships to help lighten the load. Athletes that play Division 3 football are often seen as playing For the love of the game or Love of completion and receive no sort of athletic scholarship for playing a college sport. Players that decide to take the Junior College or JUCO route are playing, more times than not, to attract the attention of Division 1 coaches in order to seize the opportunity of attending college for free. Determining the amount of current borrowing and current investing is the most complex part of this cash budget. We have already calculated current borrowing, but because we are now considering investments and interest, the formula will need to be changed. For current borrowing, the logic can be explained this way; if the unadjusted cash balance is less than the minimum acceptable cash, then borrow enough to bring this balance to the minimum. However, if the firm has some investments, reduce the amount of borrowing by an equal amount of the investments. If the adjusted cash balance is greater than the minimum and the firm has pervious borrowing, then use the cash above minimum to reduce the outstanding balance. Through his discovery of three letters, he begins to notice that there actually are some inconsistencies within the department and decided to take action. As a leader, there are responsibilities that should not be neglected. No matter how small the complaints are, as a leader, they are to take action and investigate the claim. If upper management does not take any action, then who will? In Alex s case, he under planned the situation. In order to bring change in an organization, there has to be well thought out planning. He must consider asking questions such as: what is the trade offs between his loyalty to the department as well as the governor, and the public interest? One must also look at the ethical perspective of if the is taking the right action or not. As the commissioner of the public service department, it is his responsibility to reassure that the public is receiving the most efficient, honest, fare service that could be provided through the department. It is also his responsibility to make sure there is no malpractice within the organization. If anyone is entitled to a right, than he needs to make sure that right is being provided. It is the ethical action to take. The way that Alex took action seemed to be under planned due to the lack of cognitive analysis on the situation. • 44. My Favorite Season Fall, one of my favorite times of the year. Filled with changing colors, special holidays, pumpkins, and the best thing in the world, apple cider doughnuts. Every year me and my family spend one day to rake all the leaves together. We usually only do it that once and we almost never finish. But we enjoy ourselves all the same. This occurs on the same day every year, the day we go to the pumpkin farm. That day always started early. We would wake up, quickly get ready, then drive to Burnt Toast for breakfast. Just sitting there talking, and eating for awhile. After that we d get back up and drive to Gobert s to begin the fun. Only staying a little past lunch we would laugh, and play, and eat, and pick out our pumpkin. Then right before leaving we would stand in line for half an hour. Just to get a dozen fresh apple cider doughnuts. Even though they had the same doughnuts inside the main store with a shorter wait. On the way home we divided all the doughnuts up between us. I always ate mine the quickest, dad was usually second, and my mom and Noah, my brother, both only ever ate one of theirs and saved the rest for later. Which Noah always ended up giving me one of his extras anyway. Once home it was time to work , so we banded together to rake the leaves that are always overflowing in our yard. Don t get me wrong we would work for a little bit, but then we d just end up making the biggest pile of leaves we could, so Noah could jump in. Which caused my mom to demand family ... Throughout history, artworks have been produced as an imitation of the culture and society in which they were created. The cultural frame examines the meaning of artworks in relation to the social perspective of the community from which it grows. A reflection can be seen in Manet s realist artwork of Olympia, and similarly, Umberto Boccioni s Unique forms of Continuity and Space reflects different beliefs and conventions merely as a result of societal changes. Pop Art works such a Andy Warhol s Marilyn x 100 and Post modern works, such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These particular artists chose to focus their interests on worldly, real, raw and pure subjects. They wished to create simple art, painting exactly what they saw and how they saw it. Among these artists was Edouard Manet. Manet was known as a rebel for his time most likely because of his rebellion against Classic and Romantic traditions and his confronting and stirring painting of Olympia. Manet takes Titian s Venus of Urbino as his model, yet instead of following accepted French art practices of depicting historical, biblical or mythical themes, he paints a woman of his time. The subject is a real female courtesan lying nude on a bed in a provocative position, with one hand covering her genitalia. He paints in his own manner of quick, rough, visible brushstrokes and replaces deep perspective with two flat frames. Olympia was a very confronting artwork to society as although many middle and upper class gentlemen of the time were frequent customers of courtesans and prostitutes, but being confronted by one on a canvas in a gallery was something different. Manet has broken away from traditional practices of art in the 1860s, and created a unique realist artwork depicting a common scene. Dramatic events such as the Industrial Revolution, World Wars, and changes in the social world, influenced new ideas and technology which revolutionized the way artworks ... • 48. Margaret Atwood s Penelopiad Humanist and feminist, Margaret Atwood retells the famous myth, The Odyssey, in Penelopiad. Atwood creates voices for the women who did not have an important role in Homer s epic poems. The writer also creates two levels of myths: the Homeric myth of faithful Penelope and cultural myths about women as either submissive and domestic, or as duplicitous schemers (9 Homwells). In Penelopiad, Penelope retells the story in her point of view and although she is the main narrator, the twelve maids often interject their side of the story. Throughout the work Penelope creates herself as the victim of society and is found, often times, contradicting herself. As the novel unravels the reader finds that Penelope is not a reliable source since most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... ... The more thickly they laid it on, the more costly were the gifts they expected from me. I always complied. Even an obvious fabrication is some comfort when you have few others (Atwood 49). Atwood shows how narratives may be altered or constructed differently depending on the audience. While, Penelope s payment for the altered stories shows her desire to only believe the best about Odysseus. However, the maids create Odysseus s character to be more scandalous and the complete opposite, when compared to Penelope. Their narrative suggests that he doesn t seem to be bolting back to Ithaca. Demonstrating, there is an alternative version of the story, where Odysseus is less admirable and irresponsible. Also, through the maids, Atwood is able to depict women being submissive to men, in a more rasping point of view. In particular, when Telemachus is born the maids state, We were his pets and his toy things, mock sisters, his tiny companions. ... He saw us as rightfully his, for whatever purpose (Atwood 42). Atwood shows that at a very early age women were domesticated and taught to be submissive. As for the maids, they are telling the reader that they had no other choice but to obey in order to ... • 49. Prenatal And Postnatal Health Care With complaints of inadequate maternity health care services in newspapers and social media on the rise, the issue of Ireland s poor services for women before and after birth has become an important topic. Some health care officials believe there are already safe and effective services and staffing levels implemented in prenatal and postnatal health care. Even government officials feel that there is an abundant amount of government assistance services available for prenatal and postnatal women. These views are predominately based on the data that Ireland has one of the lowest maternal and perinatal mortality rates in the world (Larkin et al. 98). In a newspaper article by Sinéad Redmond, she points out that in March of 2014, figures revealed that not a single maternity hospital in the Republic of Ireland had staffing levels of midwife to women ratios that [met] international safety standards ( Ireland s Maternity Units ). In a study conducted by Larkin, Begley, and Davane, it was also found that women often felt alone and unsupported, and Some women would not have another baby due to their childbirth experiences (98). Women who wish to be pregnant in Ireland are unhappy with their prenatal and postnatal experiences on the account of inadequate health care services, including job and government assistance. I will argue that the government and health care system in the Republic of Ireland should work together to solve these problems. The lack of attentiveness to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
