FREEZE
PROTECTION
VOLUME
TONO FROST 593 FFG is a unique formulation
that helps you save up to 10 – 12% on
electricity consumption as compared to normal
Propylene Glycol.
The freeze protection is based on tests
performed on metallic components commonly
used in industrial and commercial systems
such as steel, copper, brass and cast iron.
Slightly higher percentage of the product may
be required in systems containing plastic or
ceramic components.
HOW DOES
CORROSION
HAPPEN
Propylene Glycol oxidizes when exposed to air
and heat. When this occurs, five organic acids
viz., Glycolic, Glyoxalic, Formic, Carbonic and
Oxalic Acid are formed.
If not properly inhibited, this fluid gets very
corrosive. These organic acids then chemically
attack and corrodes the system metal, causing
pitting, pinhole and stress cracking corrosion.

EFFECTS OF
CORROSION
Apart from the capital loss
of metal corrosion, glycol
system has a much higher
effect of corrosion -
POWER LOSS DUE TO LOW HEAT TRANSFERABILITY
REDUCED COOLING EFFICIENCY
LEAKS OF PIPELINES, SEALS AND HEAT EXCHANGER
SHUT DOWNS FOR MAINTENANCE RESULTS IN LOSS
OF PRODUCTION
GLYCOL FOULING (TURNS REDDISH IN COLOR AND

  • 11. 11 593 Series FREEZE PROTECTION VOLUME TONO FROST 593 FFG is a unique formulation that helps you save up to 10 – 12% on electricity consumption as compared to normal Propylene Glycol. The freeze protection is based on tests performed on metallic components commonly used in industrial and commercial systems such as steel, copper, brass and cast iron. Slightly higher percentage of the product may be required in systems containing plastic or ceramic components. HOW DOES CORROSION HAPPEN Propylene Glycol oxidizes when exposed to air and heat. When this occurs, five organic acids viz., Glycolic, Glyoxalic, Formic, Carbonic and Oxalic Acid are formed. If not properly inhibited, this fluid gets very corrosive. These organic acids then chemically attack and corrodes the system metal, causing pitting, pinhole and stress cracking corrosion.
  • 12. 12 593 Series EFFECTS OF CORROSION Apart from the capital loss of metal corrosion, glycol system has a much higher effect of corrosion - POWER LOSS DUE TO LOW HEAT TRANSFERABILITY REDUCED COOLING EFFICIENCY LEAKS OF PIPELINES, SEALS AND HEAT EXCHANGER SHUT DOWNS FOR MAINTENANCE RESULTS IN LOSS OF PRODUCTION GLYCOL FOULING (TURNS REDDISH IN COLOR AND LOSES PROPERTIES) Fig: Usual Challenges faced with Uninhibited Propylene Glycol – Power Loss Issue POWER CONSUMPTION Years Low High Tono Frost 593 Dosion Corrosion Inhibitor Uninhibited Propylene Glycol

The water/glycol solution used for dilution should be within the following limits: SYSTEM OPERATION PROTOCOL NEW SYSTEM OLD FOULED SYSTEM Flush entire system thoroughly with normal water to remove oil, grease or protective coatings. Flush entire system thoroughly with normal water until clean, clear, neutral pH water found in the outlet. The system should be free of all foreign matters and debris. Drain solution from system Descaling of the system is recommended to remove scales and corrosion deposits. Passivate system thoroughly with 2% solution of PASSIRINSE with hot water (60-70°C) for 24 hours (4 hours on 2 hours off) Flush system with soft water before final dosing of TONO FROST 593 Use only DM (De-mineralized) water for dilution of glycol Dip the return line inside the fluid
  • 18. 18 593 Series PRECAUTIONS • Use DM water for dilution of glycol • Use of leak detection dye is mandated if suspected for leaks • Presence of proper maintenance people and equipment during cleaning will result in a smoother operation. • Prior to addition of glycol into the system, calculate the total quantity of glycol and DM water for entire system. Circulate for a minimum of 6 hours and specific gravity after, to ensure proper dilution. • For corrosion prevention, use of pre-inhibited glycol is mandated. DOSAGE & QUANTITY CALCULATION For top up requirement following formula may be used to calculate the right top up quantity* ADDING GLYCOL QG = V(D - P) (100 - P) where, D = Desired Glycol Percentage P = Present Glycol Percentage V = Circulation volume *Avoid excessive glycol concentration because it increases initial cost and adversely affect physical properties of the fluid.
