 “A title sequence is a method by which films
and television programs present their title, key
production and cast members, or both, utilizing
conceptual visuals and sound. Typically
includes (or begins) the text of the opening
credits, and helps establish the setting and
tone of the program. It consists of live action,
animation, music, still images and/or
graphics.”
What is a title sequence?
Typical Conventions Of A Title
Sequence:
 2-5 mins long
 There’s an introduction to the characters and
plot (narrative – concept, montage fitting the
style of the film genre)/ themes.
 Key Cast and credits
 Non-diegetic sound to accompany the visual
for the pleasure of the audience.

 Main characters are introduced especially ‘David
Craig’ who is known to play the James Bond role, on
many occasions it says which actor plays what
character.
 The style of the sequence is very elegant showing
glimpses typically how a James Bond film looks like,
with glimpses of action.
 The soundtrack made for this film is purposely made
for this film ‘Spectre – Radiohead’, since James Bond
you could say is a genre of its own because the music
is characteristic of this film – sophisticated and action
at the same time matching the slow movement of
visuals, no dialogue is being used.

Characters introduction, key themes
(style), sound used in the
sequence… etc.
 Characters are not introduced but the idea of the film and setting is
(showing the key themes and what environment the film will take place
in), since the title sequence are silhouettes everyone looks the same,
making it hard to distinguish the characters who will act in the film
except from knowing the actors in the film.
 This title sequence is a conceptual, it shows a chain of events as the
title sequence develops over time – there is a chance of setting and
action.
 Sound in this sequence is non-digetic, it’s put into the title sequence for
the pleasure of the audience matching the visuals as the silhouette
changes and moves around the settings beginning as if someone is
sneaking around, changing into more relaxing music for e.g. when the
silhouette is swimming in the pool – to become more feminine and
around a feminine setting. The audience see that there is a problem
where there is ‘a change of costume’ – the character changes colour
from white to black and begins to run away, the music follows and
begins to speed up while causing suspicion. Later, the setting changes
to be more formal and the soundtrack becomes more classical once
again to match the setting of the scene. The scene ending has
suspicions music with the environment being where lights switch and
turn on as the character silhouette moves leaving an enigma code as

 The main character gets introduced slowly while the title sequence is
played, a close up angle shows the audience that she is important
because it allows them to pay attention to details to how the girl ‘Victoria’
looks like, once the title sequence ends she introduces herself through
dialogue to the man that opens the door.
 The title sequence is a narrative because it’s clearly shown that it takes
place in ‘film time’ rather than ‘real life timing’ showing a storyline that is
shown through a faster pace.
 Sound is used throughout the sequence by dramatic music (non-digetic
sound) which fades out to be rhythmic and upbeat from the time where
the film set to be by the “ ‘Moody Blues’ – Nights In White Satin”, fading
out once the girl gets in the car – it sounds quiet and faded out so the
audience can concentrate on the dialogue about to take place between
the characters. The soundtrack ends as soon as she get to the gates of
the castle she is going to with a change of music. On her way there is
ambient sound with foley sfx to represent for example the opening of the
gate. As soon as the girl is walking down there is a suspicion build
through music which makes the audience feel as if she shouldn’t be going

Title Sequence Formal Conventions Research Task

  • 2.  “A title sequence is a method by which films and television programs present their title, key production and cast members, or both, utilizing conceptual visuals and sound. Typically includes (or begins) the text of the opening credits, and helps establish the setting and tone of the program. It consists of live action, animation, music, still images and/or graphics.” What is a title sequence?
  • 3. Typical Conventions Of A Title Sequence:  2-5 mins long  There’s an introduction to the characters and plot (narrative – concept, montage fitting the style of the film genre)/ themes.  Key Cast and credits  Non-diegetic sound to accompany the visual for the pleasure of the audience.
  • 5. Cast & Crew Appearance  Production Name  Main Role Actor  Film Title  Actors/Actresses  Team Roles  Unique James Bond Musical Credits (Sam Smith)
  • 6. Scene clippings with explanations: • Introduces the production company behind the film. • Introduces key actor known to play ‘James Bond’ in past films. • Introduces actor playing character in the film. • Film Title • Unique James Bond Guest Singer • Production Team Credits
  • 7. Characters introduction, key themes (style), sound used in the sequence… etc.  Main characters are introduced especially ‘David Craig’ who is known to play the James Bond role, on many occasions it says which actor plays what character.  The style of the sequence is very elegant showing glimpses typically how a James Bond film looks like, with glimpses of action.  The soundtrack made for this film is purposely made for this film ‘Spectre – Radiohead’, since James Bond you could say is a genre of its own because the music is characteristic of this film – sophisticated and action at the same time matching the slow movement of visuals, no dialogue is being used.

Characters introduction, key themes (style), sound used in the sequence… etc.  Characters are not introduced but the idea of the film and setting is (showing the key themes and what environment the film will take place in), since the title sequence are silhouettes everyone looks the same, making it hard to distinguish the characters who will act in the film except from knowing the actors in the film.  This title sequence is a conceptual, it shows a chain of events as the title sequence develops over time – there is a chance of setting and action.  Sound in this sequence is non-digetic, it’s put into the title sequence for the pleasure of the audience matching the visuals as the silhouette changes and moves around the settings beginning as if someone is sneaking around, changing into more relaxing music for e.g. when the silhouette is swimming in the pool – to become more feminine and around a feminine setting. The audience see that there is a problem where there is ‘a change of costume’ – the character changes colour from white to black and begins to run away, the music follows and begins to speed up while causing suspicion. Later, the setting changes to be more formal and the soundtrack becomes more classical once again to match the setting of the scene. The scene ending has suspicions music with the environment being where lights switch and turn on as the character silhouette moves leaving an enigma code as

Characters introduction, key themes (style), sound used in the sequence… etc.  The main character gets introduced slowly while the title sequence is played, a close up angle shows the audience that she is important because it allows them to pay attention to details to how the girl ‘Victoria’ looks like, once the title sequence ends she introduces herself through dialogue to the man that opens the door.  The title sequence is a narrative because it’s clearly shown that it takes place in ‘film time’ rather than ‘real life timing’ showing a storyline that is shown through a faster pace.  Sound is used throughout the sequence by dramatic music (non-digetic sound) which fades out to be rhythmic and upbeat from the time where the film set to be by the “ ‘Moody Blues’ – Nights In White Satin”, fading out once the girl gets in the car – it sounds quiet and faded out so the audience can concentrate on the dialogue about to take place between the characters. The soundtrack ends as soon as she get to the gates of the castle she is going to with a change of music. On her way there is ambient sound with foley sfx to represent for example the opening of the gate. As soon as the girl is walking down there is a suspicion build through music which makes the audience feel as if she shouldn’t be going
