Hello. A shadow casted itself over the tattered menu in Addison s hand as she shifts her gaze to the
figure standing over her. An overwhelming sensation embodies her as she meets the spellbinding
green eyes that stare back. The bottle green eyes that dance with gold flecks were once her grounding
point yet now look so alien. Her gaze drifts along his features, taking in each of them as though he
was a painting she was seeing for the first time. A painting that had been so carefully crafted yet
seemed so effortless with his slightly crooked nose and flawlessly tousled hair. A small smirk
playfully tugs at the corner of his lips as he slides into the battered booth seat across from her. It s
been a while, he huskily remarks. A cloud of steam escaped the machine and encompassed Addison s
face, fogging up her glasses and dampening her skin as she finished brewing the order. Her feet
swiftly padded again the retro black and white checked tiles as she moved to the red counter. ... Show

Kate Chopin s Symbolism
Kate Chopin is an author who stands out to society for being primarily a skillful colorist. Chopin is
recognized for her novels and short stories written as a young adult. As an author, the literary world
knows her for the themes of her many novels; trite and sordid, although many authors still praised her
as a realist. Kate Chopin was a masterful colorist representing her personal and professional Louisiana
life, and labeled writings with unpleasantness.
Kate O Flaherty was brought to the world on February 8, 1851 in St. Louis, Missouri. Born to her
parents Eliza Faris and Thomas O Flaherty . Her father, Thomas, was an irish born business man for
the family. He died in a railroad accident when Kate was only five years old. Her mother s side ...

Commotion occurred when Herbert S. Stone and company published The Awakening in 1899. The
novel has an exerted appeal in countries ranging from France to Japan. Kate s book was received with
great indignation. Critics claimed that Chopin was a pornographer and that her novel was immoral and
even perverse. A critic for Nation noted the unpleasantness of reading about the allegedly headstrong
protagonist. Willa Carter also complained that Chopin had wasted her writing skills on a sordid and
trite theme. Kate s novel was widely criticized for going against society s moral standards. There was
some praise for the novel s artistry and insight, critics generally denounced Chopin for her failure to

Role of the Fathers in Chaim Potok’s The Chosen Essay
Role of the Fathers in Chaim Potok s The Chosen
Chaim Potok s The Chosen is the story of a lasting friendship that blossoms between two Jewish boys,
Danny Saunders and Reuven Malter, during and after World War II. On a deeper level, much of the
plot focuses on the character of their fathers Reb Saunders and David Malter whose beliefs and ideals
are rooted in two separate worlds. Reb Saunders is a zealous Hasidic rabbi who wants to impart his
knowledge of his religion upon Danny and expects his son to follow in his footsteps. David is a
professor and single father who comes from a liberal Jewish background. As the friendship between
Reuven and Danny grows, both fathers try to reconcile their views with their sons and with their own

For hours, no words are traded, with the exception of a discussion of a Talmudic passage.
On the other hand, Reuven and David mutually support the notion that the lines of communication
between them should always be open. Whenever Reuven struggles with a problem or simply a
question, regardless the significance, he comes directly to his father for assistance. David listens
intently and offers a few suggestions or delivers a thorough answer to his son s query. For example,
when Reuven wonders about Danny, David answers with a lengthy and detailed account. This
demonstrates not only the comfort they bear in talking to each other but also the patience they ve
developed that has stemmed from their communication. Despite their lack of communication, Reb
Saunders and his son share the same admiration, respect, and trust for each other that are consistent
with Reuven s and David s relationship.
Although Reb Saunders carries the overwhelming responsibility of being tzaddik and David Malter is
often absorbed in his journalistic efforts, both fathers demonstrate through their actions the
tremendous concern they possess for the well being and overall happiness of their sons. At first, the
caring nature of Reb Saunders is not apparent, especially considering his complete silence with
Danny. However, toward the end, he reacts to Danny s decision to become involved in the secular
world not with rage but acceptance. This

Interconnections between Population Policies in China and Cultural, Historical Perceptions regarding
Sexuality, Reproduction, and Health
Introduction
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Chinese government put in place the One Child Policy in order
to limit the majority of families to one child each and reduce China s population growth rate. In
reality, China s One Child Policy consisted of many one child policies, which were generally better
implemented and stricter in urban areas than in rural areas. Variations of the general one child policy
included allowing the rural families in some areas, families of some ethnic minority groups, families
with handicapped firstborn children, and families with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(100) Because of the sharp drop in fertility rates and rise in longevity since 1980, elderly people
currently constitute a large, growing proportion of China s population. In addition to these
demographic transformations, the human consequences of China s population policies are widespread.
Women forced to undergo abortions and/or sterilizations suffer from emotional trauma, whereas non
firstborn children are undocumented and legally unrecognized by society, lacking access to education,
public services, and employment. In accordance with the goals of state population policies, China s
fertility and birth rates after 1980 have drastically dropped, yet the unforeseen consequences of these
population policies will continue to affect China for many years to come.
Many scholars have researched China s population policies and its consequences. The health effects
from sterilizations and forced abortions have been well investigated.1 The mental health of the first
versus second and third children has also been compared in multiple studies.2 In Just One Child,
Susan Greenhalgh argues that a lack of scientific judgment and input gave rise to the One Child
Policy. However, there is a lack of research into the cultural determinants leading to the development
of China s population policies and the effects that state population policies have had on ideas about
sexuality and sexual health in China.

The Use Of Anticoagulant Therapy And Its Effects On The...
Introduction
Epistaxis is defined as the occurrence of haemorrhage from the nose, which is relatively common and
does not always need professional medical attention. However, prolonged or repeated events of
nosebleeds, also known as recurrent idiopathic epistaxis may indicate certain bleeding disorders or
potential adverse effects from the use of anticoagulant therapy. Warfarin (Coumadin) is a common
anticoagulant that affects clotting factors that are produced in the liver. It is often administered after an
myocardial infarction in order to prevent thrombosis and thromboemobolism which could lead to the
development of a stroke, most of which are ischemic in origin. Despite its effectiveness, warfarin has
been implicated in 50 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His laboratory tests showed an abnormal coagulation profile, which is perhaps attributed to his daily
medication regime. Prothrombin time(PT) was significantly prolonged, whereas partial
thromoboplastin time(PTT) was only mildly prolonged. The tests also revealed a lower than normal
haematocrit, that being a direct result of prolonged bleeding. Also, his stool sample was tested positive
for blood.
Homeostasis of Hemostasis
Blood coagulation is the process whereby a blood clot (thrombus) is formed. The formation of a
thrombus represents the second stage of hemostasis, following vasoconstriction and platelet
aggregation at the site of injury. The clotting process is very complex and its role is to maintain
vascular integrity and to induce rapid clot formation after a vascular injury. It is vital to be able to
regulate the production of thrombin, in order to prevent thrombosis, as well as maintaining normal
blood circulation.
As shown by figure 1, the coagulation cascade is a protein based system which is initiated through the
activation of two separate pathways designated extrinsic and intrinsic. These two pathways proceed
through the common pathway of coagulation until fibrin is formed. The extrinsic pathway is generally
the first pathway to be activated, and it is stimulated by tissue factor thromboplastin coming into direct
contact with factor VII. Factor VII is

Red Glass Character Analysis
Throughout Red Glass, by Laura Resau, the characters have to overcome many changes. One
character that changes dramatically is the main character, Sophie. At the beginning of the novel,
Sophie is introduced as a sheltered girl, terrified of the outside world. Sophie experiences many things
that influence her to become a young woman that is willing to sacrifice her safety for the people she
loves. She is influenced mostly by the antagonist, Angel. Angel supports Sophie in ways that make her
want to change herself. Sophie changes positively throughout the story into a strong, fearless person,
and Angel s love for her is what makes her capable of that change. In the beginning, Sophie introduces
herself in the story as a nerdy, outcasted teenage girl, I always thought of myself as a free floating one
celled amoeba, minding my own business. The other kids at school were all parts of a larger organism.
. . Not particularly noticed, definitely not appreciated, just an amoeba swimming around aimlessly (9).
Sophie feels as if she does not belong where she grew up, she has always felt like she was on the
outside. Her father, a drug dealer and felon, left her mother when she was first born. Because of her
extreme self esteem issues, Sophie blames herself for her father leaving. She recalls what she believes
happened when she was born, When Mom was a teenager, I started making her belly fat. And then my
dad left. And then I was born too soon. And he came back to get us. But I was

Autism- Developmental Disability
Autism is a developmental disability that significantly affect a person s verbal and nonverbal
communication, social interaction, and educational performance. This developmental disability affects
the brain, communication and interaction with others. People with this disability often have trouble
relating and forming relationships with other people. Autism occurs very early on in the development
of the brain. The most obvious signs can be found at the ages of two or three years old.
There is no known single cause of autism. however, it is generally accepted that autism is caused by
abnormalities in the brain. Autism has been linked to genetic and environmental factors. Researchers
have identified a number of genes associated with the disorder.
There are six main characteristics of autism. They include: atypical language and development,
atypical social development, repetitive behavior, problem behavior, sensory and movement disorder,
and differences in intellectual functioning. People with autism have a broad range of language abilities
ranging from no verbal communication to quite complex communication.
Autism causes atypical social behaviors such as social interaction and social skills. people with autism
have a lack of reciprocity and they do not share enjoyments, achievements, and interests with others.
Sometimes they can have difficulty making friends. People with autism are often confused about the
appropriate social behaviors.
Another characteristic of autism is

The universe contains many galaxies and the galaxies have millions and billions of stars, here are 10
well known stars from the universe. First one is a stellar nebula , a stellar nebula is is a cloud of
superheated gases and other elements formed by the explosive death of a massive star. A stellar nebula

stellar nebula is also really big,it s a huge interstellar cloud of dust and hydrogen and helium that

When a star explodes as a supernova, most of its matter is blown away into space to form a nebula.
The ultra dense remnants of the imploding core which are lefts behinds are known as a neutron star, as
it s electrons and protons are crushed together in the huge gravity to form neutrons. The temperature
inside a newly formed neutron star is from around 1011 to 1012 kelvin. However, the huge number of
neutrinos it emits carry away so much energy that the temperature of an isolated neutron star falls
within a few years to around 106 kelvin. Then we have the average star , The average star or
intermediate mass star, is a star with an initial mass of 0.5 to 8 times that of Earth s sun . Its spends
most of its time on the main sequence as an orange, yellow , or blue white dwarf star. An average star
is a massive ball of hot gas/plasma .An average star is held together by gravity. The sun is an example
of an average star . Next, is planetary nebula , planetary nebula is a growing and glowing cloud of hot
gas/plasma that occurs near the end of a low mass star s life. Actually it has nothing to do with planets
. Planetary nebula s occur in the last stage of a dying star. Though our own star , the sun , may not die
for another 5 billion year about 10,000 of these nebula s are estimated to exist in the Milky Way. It s

Essay on The Importance of Freedom
The Importance of Freedom Many of us take freedom for granted. Many of us tend to forget the
hardships and sacrifices our forefathers of freedom went through. Many of us fail to cherish and value
our granted freedom. Many of us do not apprehend the full meaning of freedom. However, a few
among the society realize the value of such a bestowment. Our Freedom today exists as of the actions
of those who believed that it was a necessity to live by and disallowing it is a relic of days more
barbarous than ours.
But those mere sentences will never illustrate to us the hardships and rigorous tasks undertaken to give
us our freedom. At a time many of our forefathers took up arms ... Show more content on

Yet a year after these horrible events countless innocent Iraqi civilians are thrown in jails. Yet a year
after these horrible events innocent Iraqi prisoners are dragged like dogs on leashes and sexually

They have been ceaselessly fighting the occupational forces demanding their withdrawal. Many Iraqis

The Iraqi people yet stand alone in the mist of their battle for freedom and are overshadowed by the
forces of evil yet they do not give up hope. For hope is all they have.
Likewise individuals in Canada fought for their freedom but they resorted to less extensive measures.
The famous five Emily Murphy, Henrietta Edwards, Louise McKinney, Irene Parlby, and Nellie

the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that persons were males. Can you believe that at the dawn of the

The Level Of Self Esteem And Academic Performance Of...
Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the relationship between the level of self esteem and academic
performance of PSY105 student at the HELP University Campus in 2014. Convenience sampling was
used to collect the 30 samples from the population, without specific gender and ethnicity. Based on the
literature it is stated that having a high self esteem produces higher academic performance. The
researcher used an existing Rosenberg Self Esteem scale to obtain a raw data of each participant. The
statistical test used is the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. The study was based on a
non experimental correlational design. The results shows a significant negative correlation between
the level of self esteem and academic performance, this concludes the level of self esteem do influence
academic performance.
The level of Self Esteem and Academic Performance Self Esteem has been one of the elements that
play a role in the student s life of education. Past study has found high correlation between the level of
self esteem as the elements that affects academic performance, it shows that majority of student with
higher self esteem would be enthusiastically motivated to get involved in the learning environment
(Colquhoun Bourne, 2011). The aim of this research is to determine the correlation between the level
of self esteem and academic performance. This research begin focusing on two general factors of self

The Political Compass
Politics is intricate and complex, not black or white, therefore deciding where one stands isn t as
simple as being either liberal or conservative . Thus, a more three dimensional approach was created:
The Political Compass. This multifaceted analysis includes not only the traditional economic stance
but a social stance as well. Although someone claims they re a liberal, they might tend towards
communism. With the traditional left or right scale, it would be impossible to know that; The Political
Compass, however, has a dimension for fascism and anarchism along with communism and neo
liberalism which would indicate both the economic scale (communism) and social scale (libertarian).
It is also a more accurate way to determine where certain politicians lie. Take Angela Merkel,
Chancellor of Germany. She s a moderate neo liberalist who is neither full fascist or anarchist. By
understanding her policies and background and comparing her to others on the Political Compass, one
can see that this is, in fact, true. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The CDU is a liberal conservative party and those apart of it tend to be center right on the traditional
left right scale. According to The Political Compass, Merkel is pulled more towards neo liberalism,
which means that she supports a free market. The CDU implemented Germany s Social Market
Economy, an economy that doesn t want the government to have complete control over prices. This
shows that Merkel is indeed a more neo liberalist than communist. However, Germany s current
economy still has regulations in place that prevent the market from being wholly free, which is why
Merkel cannot be classified as a full neo liberalist. She also grew up in East Germany, the section of
Germany that was a proponent of communism and was a part of the Free German youth, a communist
organization. In the writer s opinion, this proves that Merkel is positioned correctly on the Political

mattered less (Abrajano, Nagler, Alverez, 2005). In the spatial model, voter s ideology had a positive
significance in both races (Abrajano, Nagler, Alverez, 2005). The more liberal the voters in the mayor

Home Office
Abstract A day at the office no longer means long commutes, dressing in a suit and tie or a dress, and
performing work according to a 9 to 5 schedule with the boss looking over your shoulder. With the
Industrial Revolution came change in how and where people work. The changes were seen subtly at
first; people slowly moved to the cities to find work in factories, but then the changes started
becoming more noticeable. People flocked to the cities because that is where a person could find
work. The days of the small farmer who grew food for his own family were gone. Big corporations
moved in and people were hired in by the hundreds, usually to perform meaningless, dreary, work.

When you travel to Madrid, Spain you look around and you see soccer, otherwise known as futbol

Tyranny Of The Majority Analysis
As an illustration about Alexis description of the Tyranny of the Majority, first we need to understand
his suspicions of its ability to protect the minority. The fact that the majority agree with slavery is
proof that majority rule did not protect the minorities. Alexis also viewed people as seeking their own
personal goal, and if placed in a position of power over the majority there could be a conflict of
moralities. For example, those in the majority who have the financial and educational advantage over
those in the minority, can maintain this advantage over those in the minority. One of the most
objections Alexis had with America were, the few protections against tyranny (Alexis de Tocqueville
74). Another opinion was about the aristocratic

Religious Beliefs And The Bible
Religious beliefs have been around for almost as long as man himself, emphasizing the importance of
existential meaning. These beliefs hold very important values that are often neglected by many.
Almost every religion teaches the overall importance of morality, defining the need for one to protect
themselves and others from the dangers that are present in the world. However, many religions have
conflicting views on the ideals that are not related to morality. For example, Judaism teaches that the
Messiah, or Son of God, has yet to arrive on Earth, while Christianity teaches that the Messiah had
already appeared as Jesus Christ, and they are awaiting the Second Coming. This is a very
contradictory aspect of either faith, and would be expected to cause much rage between the two faiths.
Yet, this anger has been subsided through the very similar teachings of both religions. Both Judaism
and Christianity have sacred text known as the Ten Commandments, which are religious laws
emphasizing the importance of morality and, of course, faith. Through this book, I will be identifying
the various world religions and ideals, from Judaism to Hinduism to Satanism, and expanding upon
the various factors that make these religions unique. These factors include, what each religion has to
offer, what the differences are among religions, and what each teaches. However, the primary focus of
this book is to emphasize that the continuing arguments among religious groups are absolutely
unnecessary,

The Milgram Experiments
1. The Milgram experiments tests males from varying ages, and education levels, to see how far the
will follow orders at other person s expense. The test was well prepared, and had a base line for
responses, that would give accurate data. The teacher in the experiment would issue shocks to the
learner for each wrong response, with increasing voltage each time. The study found that 50% of the
40 males completed the test; issuing a shock of 450 volts 3 times, in the end of the test. Although,
most people during the test wanted to stop, the experimenter would instruct them to keep going, and
claim all reasonability for the test. The results of the test show that people are willing to follow orders,
even if it harms another human being. 2. The

SAP s major competitor. SAP also competes in the customer relationship management, marketing

Realism Is The Most Convincing Paradigm For International...
WOULD YOU AGREE THAT REALISM IS THE MOST CONVINCING PARADIGM FOR
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS? WHAT ARE THE STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF
REALISM AS A THEORY FOR INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS?
Realism has dominated international relations theory since emerging in the 1930 s. The era of state
conflict lasting from the 1930 s to the end of the cold war in 1947, proved the perfect hostile
environment to fit the largely pessimistic view of world politics. While many aspects of realism are
still alive in International Relations today; including the dominant presence of states, intrinsic of war
and the decentralised government. However, realism only reaches so far in explaining and creating a
structure for international relations. Whilst the strengths of the theory lie in its pragmatic approach to
power politics and conflict. However, the realist view is weakened by changes in the way that conflict
is fought, the ineffectiveness of the balance of power model and the increasing global and
interconnected world. Thus, using realism as a structure to explain international relations today is to
some extent, a theory of the past.
There are two, key conflicting theories in the study of international relations, idealism and realism,
known to scholars as the Great Debate . Realism, offers an account of international affairs through
four central ideas; that states are the key players in international relations, the decentralised
international stage is anarchic, actors are rational and self interested

Legalization In Canada
Legalization of marijuana, also known as cannabis, weed, etc. has been a trending controversial topic
in many sectors of Canada. Although, there have been several studies, organizations and celebrities
endorsing the legalization; marijuana should not be legalized due to its severe health effects. Cannabis
has both short and long term effects on an individual s health. These effects range from brain function
and development, mental illness, heart rate to lung damage. With almost 44 percent of Canadians who
have tried marijuana, the health of Canadians is at stake. Marijuana has a significant effect on the
general physical health. One of the short term and obvious effects is the reddening of the eyes. This
occurs due to expanding blood vessels ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Marijuana in the late 1960s had only one percent of tetrahydrocannabinol, compared to present day
where Health Canada has discovered there is at least 10 percent of tetrahydrocannabinol and 30
percent in some cases. The tetrahydrocannabinol is a strong chemical and works immediately after one
has inhaled it. Tetrahydrocannabinol mimics the neurotransmitter anandamide, which fills in the
synapse between neurons and this disrupts the brain s regular functions. In a normally functioning
brain, anandamide activates the cannabinoid receptors but when smoking marijuana
tetrahydrocannabinol activates these receptors which are in the hippocampus, cerebellum and basal
ganglia. This affects the short term memory, coordination, and learning and problem solving skills for
an individual. Brain development is also affected by the use of cannabis. Dr. Harold Kalant conducted
a study in the 1980s with rats and cannabis use. He separated the rats into two groups; rats exposed to
cannabis at adolescents and rats exposed to cannabis in adulthood. Kalant observed the rats exposed to
cannabis as adolescents, had difficulty with memory and learning even after nine years of no
exposure. In comparison, the rats who were adults when exposed to cannabis didn t have long term
effects. It is evident that brain development was disrupted by the use of cannabis in the growing years.
Also, Dr. Andra Smith saw in her functional magnetic resonance imaging of brain activity of regular
cannabis smokers and non smokers, that the smokers had a more brain activity. She stated it was due
to the brain having to work hard to respond accurately . It is obvious that brain function and
development is harshly impacted by the use of

America Needs Change, But Why Not Start With The...
America needs change, but why not start with the Canadians?
It was a few years ago, and I had gone grocery shopping with my mother. I d always shop with her just
so I could get out of the house, walk around, and pick out food that I wouldn t have thought of for the
grocery list. My mother was a conservative person. She had grown up on a farm in a small town where
change would least occur. She was a spiteful person whose insecurities led her judgments. Despite her
animosity to most things, she would tell me stories to inform me on matters she finds important, like
how much money I should save for a car, or how she earned a high credit score. On our way home
from the grocery store, she decided to tell me a story she heard from her coworker. My coworker, she
has a pool in her backyard, and one day she found the black neighbor s kids swimming in her pool.
She told them that they should ask to use her pool and told their mom, but their mom said, and my
mother used her best, yet ear aching impression of a black woman and belted: you ain t using no pool!
We can use it all we want! She decided to follow her story with also, I m going to refer to black people
as Canadians. That way no one complains about it. Nobody cares what the actual Canadians, so my
coworker found Canadians in her pool.
I nodded silently because I had always found her racism distasteful. I had been quite used to her
prejudice, so it was natural for me to passively await her to stop. At the time, I

Promoting Universal Design Of Learning
The cast website was designed to give teachers, and future teachers some tools on how to better teach
their students. It also helps promote the use of a learning curriculum design called the Universal
Design of Learning also known as (UDL). One other thing about the website it looks like it was
designed to be of easy use, and easy access of the materials that are on the site. A reason that the
website is promoting Universal Design of Learning is so that teachers can reach all of their students
learning types, while only having to teach a subject one time rather than multiple times. Some other
reasons why this program is important for teachers to know about is that according to the cast website
CAST researches and develops innovative solutions to make education more inclusive and effective
(cast.org, 2015). An important thing to know is it allows teachers more ways of differentiating in their
classrooms, so that they can make sure to get all of their students learning needs met when they are
teaching their classes. It is important to know because according to the website it is researchers are
working to:
Develop promising approaches for increasing the accessibility and potential effectiveness of online

John s Journey In Search For Truth By C. S. Lewis
Throughout history, many people have dedicated their lives to search for the truth. Consequently, this
has resulted in many different philosophies and religions. Likewise, C.S Lewis writes a book dealing
with his conversation and spiritual journey in search for the truth. He uses a character named John and
this boy s journey to represent his own journey through life. The first way John searches for the truth
is in his search for happiness. He searches for happiness in many forms, but eventually finds the true
source. Another way that John searches for the truth is through the different philosophies that various
people present to him along his journey. Though at the time the different philosophies may have
seemed correct, after closer examination ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mr. Enlightenment is the first person that John meets on his travels. Accordingly, he introduces John
to the philosophy of modern science and rationalism. According to Mr. Enlightenment, modern
science and rational thinking can explain anything. Moreover, he tells John that, the Landlord is an
invention of those Stewards (Lewis 1 2), and many people believe them because they lack scientific
training. This leaves John with the notion that the landlord is a fake. Soon after, the Spirit of the Age
captures John and holds him prisoner in a cell for many days. While he is imprisoned the Spirit of the
Agee attempts to convince John and the rest of the prisoners, that they are nothing more than their
internals. Nevertheless, a woman named Reason comes and rescues John. She tries to reach John that
to find the truth, reason must be used. Reason explains to John that he is more knowledgeable than he
perceives. It is just a matter of bringing, dark part of your mind into the light part of it (Lewis 2 4).
Likewise, she talks about the importance of not making a decision without proof and how it is not bad
to stay in wonderment. John meets History sometime after his encounters with Reason. He explains to
John the nature of man in a relationship with the Landlord and the Island. He proposes that the Island
is a means to attract us to the true source of happiness which is the landlord. Additionally, he proposes
that the only way to truly reach the Landlord is through mother Kirk. This helps John come to realize
the truth about what he was searching for and how to attain it through the

10,000 employees. With an unbroken record of growth and profitability, SAS had revenue of $1.18

Satisfied employees make for satisfied customers, and satisfied customers make for an ongoing stream
of revenue and profits for SAS. SAS s leaders recognize both the benefits and costs associated with
keeping employees satisfied. One of the most significant benefits for SAS is a very low annual
turnover rate. The company s turnover rate is less than four percent, as compared to approximately 25
percent for the industry as a whole. This low turnover saves the company about $70 million annually
in employee replacement costs. (14) On the cost side, of course, is the company s monetary outlay for
the various programs. David Russo, the human resources director, argues that the employee
replacement cost savings more than pays for the company s generous benefits. That s the beauty of it,
says Russo. There s no way I could spend all the money we save. (15) Perhaps of more concern on the
cost side is the potential for employees failing to perform. In commenting on the company s
performance expectations for employees, Goodnight says: I like to be around happy people, but if they
don t get that next release out, they re not going to be very happy. (16) Pondering the likelihood that
SAS employees would take advantage of the company s relaxed atmosphere, John Sall, co owner of
SAS, observes: I can t imagine that playing Ping Pong would be more interesting than work. (17)

The Color Purple by Alice Walker
The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than
black people were made for white, or women created for men. Straight from the mouth of Alice
Walker this quote was spoken in order to point out that fact that none of God s creatures were put on
this Earth to be someone else s property. Alice Walker is an African American novelist and poet who
took part in the 1960 s civil rights movement in Mississippi. Walker s creative vision was sparked by
the financial suffering and racial horror of African American life and culture in the rural South. Her
writing explores different relationships among women and embraces the compensating power of social
and political revolution. Walker was a catalyst for change during her lifetime.
Alice Malsenior Walker was born on February 9, 1944, in Eatonton, Georgia. Alice Walker is one of
the most admired African American authors writing today. Because she was the youngest daughter of
sharecroppers, Walker grew up fairly poor. Her mother spent her days as a maid in order to provide for
her eight children. When Walker was about 8 years old, she was victim to a serious injury that
impacted her life and personality. She was shot in the right eye with a BB pellet dur8ing agame of
cowboys and Indians with two of her brothers. Pasty scar tissue formed in her damaged eye, and
caused her to become self conscious of this visible mark. After the incident, Walker largely withdrew
from the world around her.

Analysis Of The Kite Runner
One major theme that is evident in The Kite Runner is that scars are reminders of life s pain and
regret, and, though you can ease the regret and the scars will fade, neither will completely go away.
We all have regrets and always will, but though it will be a long hard process we can lessen them
through redemption. The majority of The Kite Runner is about the narrator and protagonist, Amir.
Almost all of the characters in The Kite Runner have scars, whether they are physical or emotional.
Baba has scars all down his back from fighting a bear, but he also has emotional scars from not being
able to admit that Hassan was also his son. Hassan is born with a cleft lip, but for his birthday Baba
pays for it to be fixed, which left a small scar above his mouth. Hassan also has emotional scars from
being raped. The reader is probably shown the emotional scars of Amir the most. Amir has emotional
scars because he feels that he killed his mother, and also because his father emotionally neglects him.
In the end of the novel, Amir receives many physical scars from getting beaten up by Assef, when
rescuing Sohrab. Though scars will never go away and are a reminder of the past, not all scars are bad.
The book The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is a story about two brothers who develop both
emotional and physical scars that in the end shape them as individuals. This amazingly written novel
will leave the reader sobbing at times of sorrow, and smiling and laughing at times of joy. This

  • 2. Senior Project Descriptive Writing Hello. A shadow casted itself over the tattered menu in Addison s hand as she shifts her gaze to the figure standing over her. An overwhelming sensation embodies her as she meets the spellbinding green eyes that stare back. The bottle green eyes that dance with gold flecks were once her grounding point yet now look so alien. Her gaze drifts along his features, taking in each of them as though he was a painting she was seeing for the first time. A painting that had been so carefully crafted yet seemed so effortless with his slightly crooked nose and flawlessly tousled hair. A small smirk playfully tugs at the corner of his lips as he slides into the battered booth seat across from her. It s been a while, he huskily remarks. A cloud of steam escaped the machine and encompassed Addison s face, fogging up her glasses and dampening her skin as she finished brewing the order. Her feet swiftly padded again the retro black and white checked tiles as she moved to the red counter. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Looking at the stranger, Addison s gaze met the most hypnotising eyes she had encountered in her 19 years. • 3. Kate Chopin s Symbolism Kate Chopin is an author who stands out to society for being primarily a skillful colorist. Chopin is recognized for her novels and short stories written as a young adult. As an author, the literary world knows her for the themes of her many novels; trite and sordid, although many authors still praised her as a realist. Kate Chopin was a masterful colorist representing her personal and professional Louisiana life, and labeled writings with unpleasantness. Kate O Flaherty was brought to the world on February 8, 1851 in St. Louis, Missouri. Born to her parents Eliza Faris and Thomas O Flaherty . Her father, Thomas, was an irish born business man for the family. He died in a railroad accident when Kate was only five years old. Her mother s side ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Commotion occurred when Herbert S. Stone and company published The Awakening in 1899. The novel has an exerted appeal in countries ranging from France to Japan. Kate s book was received with great indignation. Critics claimed that Chopin was a pornographer and that her novel was immoral and even perverse. A critic for Nation noted the unpleasantness of reading about the allegedly headstrong protagonist. Willa Carter also complained that Chopin had wasted her writing skills on a sordid and trite theme. Kate s novel was widely criticized for going against society s moral standards. There was some praise for the novel s artistry and insight, critics generally denounced Chopin for her failure to condemn Edna s actions and for allowing Edna to make her final choice in life (Telgen and Hile ... • 4. Role of the Fathers in Chaim Potok’s The Chosen Essay Role of the Fathers in Chaim Potok s The Chosen Chaim Potok s The Chosen is the story of a lasting friendship that blossoms between two Jewish boys, Danny Saunders and Reuven Malter, during and after World War II. On a deeper level, much of the plot focuses on the character of their fathers Reb Saunders and David Malter whose beliefs and ideals are rooted in two separate worlds. Reb Saunders is a zealous Hasidic rabbi who wants to impart his knowledge of his religion upon Danny and expects his son to follow in his footsteps. David is a professor and single father who comes from a liberal Jewish background. As the friendship between Reuven and Danny grows, both fathers try to reconcile their views with their sons and with their own ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For hours, no words are traded, with the exception of a discussion of a Talmudic passage. On the other hand, Reuven and David mutually support the notion that the lines of communication between them should always be open. Whenever Reuven struggles with a problem or simply a question, regardless the significance, he comes directly to his father for assistance. David listens intently and offers a few suggestions or delivers a thorough answer to his son s query. For example, when Reuven wonders about Danny, David answers with a lengthy and detailed account. This demonstrates not only the comfort they bear in talking to each other but also the patience they ve developed that has stemmed from their communication. Despite their lack of communication, Reb Saunders and his son share the same admiration, respect, and trust for each other that are consistent with Reuven s and David s relationship. Although Reb Saunders carries the overwhelming responsibility of being tzaddik and David Malter is often absorbed in his journalistic efforts, both fathers demonstrate through their actions the tremendous concern they possess for the well being and overall happiness of their sons. At first, the caring nature of Reb Saunders is not apparent, especially considering his complete silence with Danny. However, toward the end, he reacts to Danny s decision to become involved in the secular world not with rage but acceptance. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Emily Truong Honors Thesis 12/16/15 Interconnections between Population Policies in China and Cultural, Historical Perceptions regarding Sexuality, Reproduction, and Health Introduction In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Chinese government put in place the One Child Policy in order to limit the majority of families to one child each and reduce China s population growth rate. In reality, China s One Child Policy consisted of many one child policies, which were generally better implemented and stricter in urban areas than in rural areas. Variations of the general one child policy included allowing the rural families in some areas, families of some ethnic minority groups, families with handicapped firstborn children, and families with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (100) Because of the sharp drop in fertility rates and rise in longevity since 1980, elderly people currently constitute a large, growing proportion of China s population. In addition to these demographic transformations, the human consequences of China s population policies are widespread. Women forced to undergo abortions and/or sterilizations suffer from emotional trauma, whereas non firstborn children are undocumented and legally unrecognized by society, lacking access to education, public services, and employment. In accordance with the goals of state population policies, China s fertility and birth rates after 1980 have drastically dropped, yet the unforeseen consequences of these population policies will continue to affect China for many years to come. Many scholars have researched China s population policies and its consequences. The health effects from sterilizations and forced abortions have been well investigated.1 The mental health of the first versus second and third children has also been compared in multiple studies.2 In Just One Child, Susan Greenhalgh argues that a lack of scientific judgment and input gave rise to the One Child Policy. However, there is a lack of research into the cultural determinants leading to the development of China s population policies and the effects that state population policies have had on ideas about sexuality and sexual health in China. However, prolonged or repeated events of nosebleeds, also known as recurrent idiopathic epistaxis may indicate certain bleeding disorders or potential adverse effects from the use of anticoagulant therapy. Warfarin (Coumadin) is a common anticoagulant that affects clotting factors that are produced in the liver. It is often administered after an myocardial infarction in order to prevent thrombosis and thromboemobolism which could lead to the development of a stroke, most of which are ischemic in origin. His laboratory tests showed an abnormal coagulation profile, which is perhaps attributed to his daily medication regime. Prothrombin time(PT) was significantly prolonged, whereas partial thromoboplastin time(PTT) was only mildly prolonged. The tests also revealed a lower than normal haematocrit, that being a direct result of prolonged bleeding. Also, his stool sample was tested positive for blood. Homeostasis of Hemostasis Blood coagulation is the process whereby a blood clot (thrombus) is formed. The formation of a thrombus represents the second stage of hemostasis, following vasoconstriction and platelet aggregation at the site of injury. The clotting process is very complex and its role is to maintain vascular integrity and to induce rapid clot formation after a vascular injury. It is vital to be able to regulate the production of thrombin, in order to prevent thrombosis, as well as maintaining normal blood circulation. As shown by figure 1, the coagulation cascade is a protein based system which is initiated through the activation of two separate pathways designated extrinsic and intrinsic. These two pathways proceed through the common pathway of coagulation until fibrin is formed. The extrinsic pathway is generally the first pathway to be activated, and it is stimulated by tissue factor thromboplastin coming into direct contact with factor VII. Factor VII is ... • 13. The Political Compass Politics is intricate and complex, not black or white, therefore deciding where one stands isn t as simple as being either liberal or conservative . Thus, a more three dimensional approach was created: The Political Compass. This multifaceted analysis includes not only the traditional economic stance but a social stance as well. Although someone claims they re a liberal, they might tend towards communism. With the traditional left or right scale, it would be impossible to know that; The Political Compass, however, has a dimension for fascism and anarchism along with communism and neo liberalism which would indicate both the economic scale (communism) and social scale (libertarian). It is also a more accurate way to determine where certain politicians lie. Take Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany. She s a moderate neo liberalist who is neither full fascist or anarchist. By understanding her policies and background and comparing her to others on the Political Compass, one can see that this is, in fact, true. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The CDU is a liberal conservative party and those apart of it tend to be center right on the traditional left right scale. According to The Political Compass, Merkel is pulled more towards neo liberalism, which means that she supports a free market. The CDU implemented Germany s Social Market Economy, an economy that doesn t want the government to have complete control over prices. This shows that Merkel is indeed a more neo liberalist than communist. However, Germany s current economy still has regulations in place that prevent the market from being wholly free, which is why Merkel cannot be classified as a full neo liberalist. • 16. Home Office Abstract A day at the office no longer means long commutes, dressing in a suit and tie or a dress, and performing work according to a 9 to 5 schedule with the boss looking over your shoulder. With the Industrial Revolution came change in how and where people work. The changes were seen subtly at first; people slowly moved to the cities to find work in factories, but then the changes started becoming more noticeable. People flocked to the cities because that is where a person could find work. The days of the small farmer who grew food for his own family were gone. Big corporations moved in and people were hired in by the hundreds, usually to perform meaningless, dreary, work. Modern society is seeing a new kind of Industrial Revolution ... • 23. Religious Beliefs And The Bible Religious beliefs have been around for almost as long as man himself, emphasizing the importance of existential meaning. These beliefs hold very important values that are often neglected by many. Almost every religion teaches the overall importance of morality, defining the need for one to protect themselves and others from the dangers that are present in the world. However, many religions have conflicting views on the ideals that are not related to morality. For example, Judaism teaches that the Messiah, or Son of God, has yet to arrive on Earth, while Christianity teaches that the Messiah had already appeared as Jesus Christ, and they are awaiting the Second Coming. This is a very contradictory aspect of either faith, and would be expected to cause much rage between the two faiths. Yet, this anger has been subsided through the very similar teachings of both religions. Both Judaism and Christianity have sacred text known as the Ten Commandments, which are religious laws emphasizing the importance of morality and, of course, faith. Through this book, I will be identifying the various world religions and ideals, from Judaism to Hinduism to Satanism, and expanding upon the various factors that make these religions unique. • 26. Realism Is The Most Convincing Paradigm For International... WOULD YOU AGREE THAT REALISM IS THE MOST CONVINCING PARADIGM FOR INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS? WHAT ARE THE STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF REALISM AS A THEORY FOR INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS? Realism has dominated international relations theory since emerging in the 1930 s. The era of state conflict lasting from the 1930 s to the end of the cold war in 1947, proved the perfect hostile environment to fit the largely pessimistic view of world politics. While many aspects of realism are still alive in International Relations today; including the dominant presence of states, intrinsic of war and the decentralised government. However, realism only reaches so far in explaining and creating a structure for international relations. Whilst the strengths of the theory lie in its pragmatic approach to power politics and conflict. However, the realist view is weakened by changes in the way that conflict is fought, the ineffectiveness of the balance of power model and the increasing global and interconnected world. Marijuana in the late 1960s had only one percent of tetrahydrocannabinol, compared to present day where Health Canada has discovered there is at least 10 percent of tetrahydrocannabinol and 30 percent in some cases. The tetrahydrocannabinol is a strong chemical and works immediately after one has inhaled it. Tetrahydrocannabinol mimics the neurotransmitter anandamide, which fills in the synapse between neurons and this disrupts the brain s regular functions. In a normally functioning brain, anandamide activates the cannabinoid receptors but when smoking marijuana tetrahydrocannabinol activates these receptors which are in the hippocampus, cerebellum and basal ganglia. This affects the short term memory, coordination, and learning and problem solving skills for an individual. Brain development is also affected by the use of cannabis. Dr. Harold Kalant conducted a study in the 1980s with rats and cannabis use. He separated the rats into two groups; rats exposed to cannabis at adolescents and rats exposed to cannabis in adulthood. Kalant observed the rats exposed to cannabis as adolescents, had difficulty with memory and learning even after nine years of no exposure. In comparison, the rats who were adults when exposed to cannabis didn t have long term effects. It is evident that brain development was disrupted by the use of cannabis in the growing years. • 36. Analysis Of The Kite Runner One major theme that is evident in The Kite Runner is that scars are reminders of life s pain and regret, and, though you can ease the regret and the scars will fade, neither will completely go away. We all have regrets and always will, but though it will be a long hard process we can lessen them through redemption. The majority of The Kite Runner is about the narrator and protagonist, Amir. Almost all of the characters in The Kite Runner have scars, whether they are physical or emotional. Baba has scars all down his back from fighting a bear, but he also has emotional scars from not being able to admit that Hassan was also his son. Hassan is born with a cleft lip, but for his birthday Baba pays for it to be fixed, which left a small scar above his mouth. Hassan also has emotional scars from being raped. The reader is probably shown the emotional scars of Amir the most. Amir has emotional scars because he feels that he killed his mother, and also because his father emotionally neglects him. In the end of the novel, Amir receives many physical scars from getting beaten up by Assef, when rescuing Sohrab. Though scars will never go away and are a reminder of the past, not all scars are bad. The book The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is a story about two brothers who develop both emotional and physical scars that in the end shape them as individuals. This amazingly written novel will leave the reader sobbing at times of sorrow, and smiling and laughing at times of joy. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
