This document provides an introduction to the present tense and present progressive tense in English grammar. It discusses the formation of affirmative and negative statements as well as yes/no and wh- questions for both tenses. Examples are provided to illustrate the rules. The key differences in usage between the simple present and present progressive tenses are outlined. Students are assigned exercises to practice applying the tenses in sentences, questions, and an essay.

2. Introduction
Basically, we are going to study the form and function of
the Present Tense, the Present Progessive Tense in order
to communicate properly .

3. Course Objective
To learn and acquire new concepts that will enhance
fluency in communication
To apply the rules in grammar in writing and speaking

4. The Simple Present Tense
 Affirmative statements:
subject + a verb or verb + -s or –es
 Negative statements:
subject + do not/ don`t or does not/ doesn`t + a verb
Example:
I like music.
Jose likes music.
They don`t like basketball.
Emely does`t eats mango.

5. Yes/no questions in the Simple Present Tense
 We form yes/no questions in the simple present
tense with:
do or does + a subject + a verb
A: Do you like baseball?
B: Yes, I do. / No, I don`t.
A: Does Martha like swimming?
B: Yes, she does. / No, she doesn`t.

6. Wh- words: what, where, when, how which, why,
who and whom with questions
 If wh- word is the subject of the question, we do not use
the auxiliary verbs do or does, and we do not change the
word order of the subject and the verb.
Who wants to play soccer?
 If wh-word is not the subject of the question, we use the :
Wh- word + do or does + a subject + the base verb
Why do you like baseball?
What does catcher do in baseball?

7. The Present Progressive Tense
 Affirmative statements:
a subject + the present tense of be + a verb + ing
The players are trying to score.
 Negative statements:
a subject + present tense of be +not + a verb + ing
They aren`t welcome.

8. Wh- words: what, where, when, how which, why,
who and whom with questions
 We form wh- questions in the progressive tense in
the same two ways as in the simple present tense, but
we use present progressive verbs forms.
Who is winning ?
Why is that player running now?

9. Simple Present Tense Present Progressive Tense
To describe repeated actions or habits To talk about something wihich is in progress at
the moment of speaking.
It is raining right now.
To talk about things that are always or To talk about something which is in progress
generally true around the present
The sun sets in the west.
Marcos is looking for a new job these days.
To describe a permanent situation. To talk about situations temporary
