Children develop a sense of self based on how accepted they feel by their parents. Research shows that before age 8, children rely on their parents' view of them to form their self-image. There are three ways parents can promote self-acceptance in children: 1) Accepting mistakes non-judgmentally while guiding them constructively; 2) Focusing less on their own aspirations and more on their child's strengths; 3) Parents being self-accepting themselves, as children learn attitudes like judgment from their parents' behavior. Fostering unconditional self-acceptance in children requires parents to convey predominantly positive messages about them.
