A thermocouple is a temperature measuring device consisting of two different metals joined together at each end. One junction is placed at the location being measured, while the other is kept at a constant reference temperature. A temperature difference between the junctions produces an electromotive force that is proportional to the temperature difference, allowing an attached instrument to measure and report the temperature. The voltage generated depends on the specific metals used, and results from differences in the thermoelectric effect along the lengths of the two dissimilar metals when subjected to a temperature gradient.
