UNIT 1 - FUNDAMENTALS OF MANAGEMENT
What is Scientific Management Theory?
Scientific management theory is a method of improving efficiency in the
workforce.
As its name implies, this management theory uses scientific methods to
assess work processes.
The scientific method consists of three steps:
• Observation
• Experimentation
• Analysis
The History of Scientific
Management Theory
Frederick Winslow Taylor, a 20th-century
mechanical engineer, pioneered scientific
management theory during the rise of
industrialization in the US.
Observing issues like lack of specialization,
inefficient tools, and disconnected
management, Taylor introduced specialized
tools, advocated for task-worker alignment,
and trained managers in his methods. Taylor's
ideas played a significant role in shaping the
Industrial Age and are often referred to as
"Taylorism." 1856 - 1915
Principles of Scientific Management
Frederick Winslow Taylor, often referred to as the
'Father of Scientific Management,' demonstrated the
applicability of scientific methods in management.
His focus was on both supervisory and operational levels
of management.
Taylor's five management principles are central to his
approach.
Principles of Scientific Management
Science, not the Rule of Thumb
Harmony, Not Discord
Mental Revolution
Cooperation, Not Individualism
Development of Every Person to his Greatest Efficiency
Science, Not The Rule of Thumb
Frederick Winslow Taylor emphasized
efficiency improvement in organizations
through scientific analysis instead of relying
on the 'Rule of Thumb' approach.
Taylor believed that even seemingly simple
tasks, like loading paper sheets into boxcars,
can be optimized through scientific planning,
resulting in time and energy savings.
He advocated making decisions based on
cause-and-effect relationships rather than
personal judgments, thereby enhancing
decision-making quality.
Harmony, Not Discord
Taylor indicated and believed that the
relationship between the workers and
management should be cordial and
completely harmonious.
Difference between the two will never be
beneficial to either side.
Management and workers should
acknowledge and understand each other’s
importance.
Taylor also suggested the mental revolution
for both management and workers to achieve
total harmony.
Mental Revolution
This technique involves a shift of attitude of
management and workers towards each
other.
Both should understand the value of each
other and work with full participation and
cooperation.
The aim of both should be to improve and
boost the profits of the organisation. Mental
Revolution demands a complete change in
the outlook of both the workers and
management; both should have a sense of
togetherness.
Cooperation, Not Individualism
It is similar to ‘Harmony, not discord’
and believes in mutual collaboration
between workers and the management.
Managers and workers should have
mutual cooperation and confidence
and a sense of goodwill.
The main purpose is to substitute
internal competition with cooperation.
Development of Every Person to
his Greatest Efficiency
The effectiveness of a company also relies
on the abilities and skills of its employees.
Thus, implementing training, learning best
practices and technology, is the scientific
approach to brush up the employee skill.
To assure that the training is given to the
right employee, the right steps should be
taken at the time of selection and
recruiting candidates based on a scientific
selection.

  • 3. What is Scientific Management Theory? Scientific management theory is a method of improving efficiency in the workforce. As its name implies, this management theory uses scientific methods to assess work processes. The scientific method consists of three steps: • Observation • Experimentation • Analysis
  • 4. The History of Scientific Management Theory Frederick Winslow Taylor, a 20th-century mechanical engineer, pioneered scientific management theory during the rise of industrialization in the US. Observing issues like lack of specialization, inefficient tools, and disconnected management, Taylor introduced specialized tools, advocated for task-worker alignment, and trained managers in his methods. Taylor's ideas played a significant role in shaping the Industrial Age and are often referred to as "Taylorism." 1856 - 1915
  • 5. Principles of Scientific Management Frederick Winslow Taylor, often referred to as the 'Father of Scientific Management,' demonstrated the applicability of scientific methods in management. His focus was on both supervisory and operational levels of management. Taylor's five management principles are central to his approach.

  • 7. Science, Not The Rule of Thumb Frederick Winslow Taylor emphasized efficiency improvement in organizations through scientific analysis instead of relying on the 'Rule of Thumb' approach. Taylor believed that even seemingly simple tasks, like loading paper sheets into boxcars, can be optimized through scientific planning, resulting in time and energy savings. He advocated making decisions based on cause-and-effect relationships rather than personal judgments, thereby enhancing decision-making quality.
  • 8. Harmony, Not Discord Taylor indicated and believed that the relationship between the workers and management should be cordial and completely harmonious. Difference between the two will never be beneficial to either side. Management and workers should acknowledge and understand each other’s importance. Taylor also suggested the mental revolution for both management and workers to achieve total harmony.
  • 9. Mental Revolution This technique involves a shift of attitude of management and workers towards each other. Both should understand the value of each other and work with full participation and cooperation. The aim of both should be to improve and boost the profits of the organisation. Mental Revolution demands a complete change in the outlook of both the workers and management; both should have a sense of togetherness.
  • 10. Cooperation, Not Individualism It is similar to ‘Harmony, not discord’ and believes in mutual collaboration between workers and the management. Managers and workers should have mutual cooperation and confidence and a sense of goodwill. The main purpose is to substitute internal competition with cooperation.
  • 11. Development of Every Person to his Greatest Efficiency The effectiveness of a company also relies on the abilities and skills of its employees. Thus, implementing training, learning best practices and technology, is the scientific approach to brush up the employee skill. To assure that the training is given to the right employee, the right steps should be taken at the time of selection and recruiting candidates based on a scientific selection.
