Introduction of the novel
 The novel divided into three
volume. Volume 1, the largest of
the three ,22 chapter and 132
pages.
 Volume 2 , 14 chapters ,113
pages.
 Volume 3, 14 chapter ,123 pages.
 The first volume deals with mainly
introduction of a majority of the
characters and initial romantic
attachments.
 volume 2 Elinor and marianne’s
trip to London.
 Volume 3 resolve the relationship.
Theme of Marriage:
• Feeling on subjects of marriages.
• Marriage is only satisfactory when there
is love between the two people involved.
Jane Austen is very famous in social tendency. In the whole novel
Austen uses marriage as a plot and theme of the novel.
Here we can see marriage as a purely economic exercise and also
marriage for love.
 Marriage
 For Marianne and Elinor Marriage is not a choice but a necessity; and
their need to marry expediently and well is a pressing concern in the
novel as they look for suitors.
 Younger men are more free to chose a life partner for marriage for
example Mr. Colonel Brandon reach at the age of 35 and still
unmarried.
 For women who have money, marriage is necessary to secure their
social positions and ensure financial stability for future.
 SENSE/SENSIBILITY
 The main theme in this novel is the danger of excessive sensibility
(emotional ). The sentimentalism was the very popular at that time.
 Austen is concerned to emphasizing the emotional and sentimental
nature of people rather then their rational endowments.
 “ I could not be happy with a man whose taste did not in every
point coincide with my own. He must enter in all my feelings; the
same books the same music must charm us both.” (Marianne).
 Samuel Richardson's portrayal of women in his novel has some
influence on Austen’s novel also.
 As we can see in the character of Marianne who immediately falls in
love with John Willoughby without knowing his background.
Elinor Edward
Edward Lucy
– Lucy Robert
Marianne Willoughby
Willoughby Sophia Gray
Marianne Colonel
Elinor falls in love with Edward.
Edward has true with Elinor
because of that he Marries with
Elinor thought he disheritages
from will. That’s why call marriage
for love.
Love story between Marianne and
Willoughby. ALL think that Marianne and
Willoughby will marry but after some time
Willoughby runs away to London and never
comes back, later the news comes that he
married with Sophia who has plenty one
money
 For John, money is important not Marianne though he loves her, He
doesn’t marry with her because of money at the climax Marianne
marries with Colonel Brandon for social status.
 Marriage Between Lucy and Robert though Lucy wants to marry with
Edward when she Knows that he is disheritage from will. She Marries
with his brother Robert so this marriage Shows as a economical
exercise.
