Abstract:
Shashi Deshpande is a famous Indian novelist who has won many awards for her magnificent writings.She is one of the most notable authors in Indian writing in English. Her famous novels are -The Dark Holds No Terrors (1980), if I Die Today (1982), Roots and Shadows (1983), Come Up and Be Dead (1983), That Long Silence (1988), The Binding Vine (1992), and A Matter of Time (1996). Her novel “Roots and Shadows” has won a prize for the best Indian novel of 1982-83. She is the recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1990 for her novel That Long Silence. She has also won ‘Padma Shri’ (2009) for the novel ‘That Long Silence’. Her leading ladies are married women and they are the true reflection of Indian women. Seeking for identity and self-liberation have become the most important themes of the contemporary novel. ‘That Long Silence’ (1988) is an expression of the Agony of housewives. The Story revolves around ‘Jaya’ an educated young woman lives with her husband Mohan and two children Rahul and Rati. Jaya is a sufferer of gender differentiation and patriarchy. After wedding she becomes speechless in order to be a good cultural wife. The novel questions the tradition-bound Indian society that treats women unkindly. My aim is to highlight how women are divided between traditional values of the society and her individuality. The essay analyses how the patriarchal domination and gender differentiation exist within the family.

ABSTRACT: The eminence of a woman in a society varied with each culture, each country and with each age. Of course, in most societies and in most cultures, like in Indian society and culture, the woman is given an eminent position, at least theoretically. However, in practicality, a woman was always regarded as secondary to a man and was forbidden from all centers of power. Naturally, women were oppressed through different means and ways peculiar to each culture and society which gradually led to the rise of the feminist movement. In which, women were authorized to express their opinions against restrictions and patriarchal injustices. Basically, feminism focuses on finding one’s own roots in the society.The word ‘Feminism’ deals with the higher perception of individuality of women and also the female conundrums. The last few decades have noticed this new genre of writing by women, for women, and about women, particularly in Indian English Writing. Needless to say, the Indian women in these writings are a blend of tradition and modernity enduring the trials of the past and yearning for a better destiny. This is the main essence of feminism in Indian Literature. Women’s writings have achieved a great deal of prominence all over the world. The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

One of the most interesting factor that played a

Ranghama acts as a source of information,
knowledge of inspiration to the village women.
While moorthy spent his days in prison, the
women of kanthapura took charges of strrugle
For freedom. they formed woman’s volunteer
corps under the leadership of rangamma who
instilled patriotism among the women by
presenting the historical figure like laxmi bai,
sarojini naidu etc.
Rao pictures women taking part in the national
movement in kanthapura.it is with the help of
women that moorthy, gandhi and other man,
brings in a lot of change in village.
7. In short we can say that women of
kanthapura are ignorant but we witnessed
the immense change that is gradually
brought about in psyche of the narrow-
minded, prejudiced and understanding.
There is one question raises that whether
their role is a heroic/dominant or subaltern
one. Are they Heroins Are victims of their
own that is being used to sacrifice their
physical and emotional need for the victory
of men ?Who gets the medal in end.
