The end goal might be breaking your existing ASP.NET monolith into microservices which run cross-platform on .NET Core, but the first step can be as simple as packaging your whole .Net Framework application as-is into a Docker image and running it as a container.
In this session, we'll take an existing ASP.NET WebForms application and package it as a Docker image, which can run in a container on Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10. We'll show you how to run the app and a SQL Server database in Docker containers on Windows, and how to use Docker Compose to define the structure of a distributed application.
Then we'll iteratively add functionality to the app, making use of the Docker platform to modernize the monolith without a full rebuild. We'll take a feature-driven approach and show you how Docker makes it easy to address performance, usability and design issues.y and design issues.

This session will show you how to make that happen, but more importantly you'll see why it's a such an important capability - one that will change the way you design, build and deliver software. Vagrant is a great solution for providing all of your devs a standard dev environment, but like all the other great technology out there, you have to learn it, and then implement it.
Not anymore, this session will give you a well used, documented Vagrant Setup, with the flexibility to use it for all of your future dev projects too. Learn how this Vagrant Environment is setup, and how to extend it. Kill the learning curve, and spin it up today.
This setup is being used by several devs, on several projects, and has simple flexibility built in. Drop your repos in the main folder, follow simple conventions, and add a small amount of configuration and be able to spin up your environment in minutes. This setup can configure a simple welcome page, configure the web server and cfml engine mappings, datasources, web server settings per site, host entries, and much more.
As great as this sounds, nothing is ever perfect, learn how some assumptions left me looking silly, and owing another developer a meal, and how I resolved that issue and made this vagrant setup even better.

The services in a microservice architecture must be loosely coupled and so cannot share database tables. What’s more, two phase commit (a.k.a. a distributed transaction) is not a viable option for modern applications. Consequently, a microservices application must use the Saga pattern, which maintains data consistency using a series of local transactions.
In this presentation, you will learn how sagas work and how they differ from traditional transactions. We describe how to use sagas to develop business logic in a microservices application. You will learn effective techniques for orchestrating sagas and how to use messaging for reliability. We will describe the design of a saga framework for Java and show a sample application.

Introduced by Eric Evans in 2004 via his Blue Book, Domain Driven Design (DDD) has received tremendous positive feedbacks from many developers & communities over the years. On the other hand, we have to admit that DDD has since not been widely used in the trenches or within most of our development projects... How can we explain such failure in its diffusion? Is DDD in itself difficult or is it just the way people used to present it which makes it hard to grasp and inaccessible? Through our various (more or less successful ;-) experiences, we will try to highlight what DDD is using a simple and more accessible approach. The opportunity for us is to show you how helpful it can be for your day-to-day projects. Wouldn't be the perfect time for all of us to ease the DDD onboarding for beginners and to reboot DDD for experts?

It is an architectural style that structures an application as a set of loosely coupled services that are organized around business capabilities. Its goal is to enable the continuous delivery of large, complex applications. However, the microservice architecture is not a silver bullet and it has some significant drawbacks.
The goal of the microservices pattern language is to enable software developers to apply the microservice architecture effectively. It is a collection of patterns that solve architecture, design, development and operational problems. In this talk, I’ll provide an overview of the microservice architecture and describe the motivations for the pattern language. You will learn about the key patterns in the pattern language.

In a microservice architecture, each service has a private datastore in order to ensure that the services are loosely coupled. While loose coupling is essential, this architecture makes managing transactions and querying difficult. You can’t use traditional distributed transactions. Nor can you use distributed queries. In this talk you will learn about some patterns for solving these problems: Sagas, API Composition and Command Query Responsibility Segregation (CQRS).

In this talk we share our experiences developing and deploying a microservices-based application. You will learn about the distributed data management challenges that arise in a microservices architecture. We will describe how we solved them using event sourcing to reliably publish events that drive eventually consistent workflows and pdate CQRS-based views. You will also learn how we build and deploy the application using a Jenkins-based deployment pipeline that creates Docker images that run on Amazon EC2.

Containers are the runtime for distributed apps - that's old .NET monoliths being broken down into multiple components, as well as new .NET Core microservices projects. Your orchestrator can connect containers together without making any of them publicly accessible, so you can make your entire app private with just a single, secure entrypoint to your application.
That's a reverse proxy, a piece of software which receives all external network traffic and fetches the response from a private container, before sending it back to the client. You can offload a lot of concerns to your reverse proxy and keep your application code clean - the proxy handles SSL, compression, load-balancing, routing and healthchecks.
In this session you'll see the popular open-source reverse proxy Traefik in action. I'll use Traefik as the front-end to distributed .NET applications running in a Docker cluster, and show you to add the features of a reverse proxy without any changes to application code.

Communication is the backbone of distributed applications. Imagine you could control that backbone independently of all the components, so your application code just makes simple calls to other services, and your communication backbone does all the complex non-functional work. Load balancing, traffic management, fault tolerance, end-to-end monitoring, dynamic routing and secure communication could all be applied and controlled centrally. That's a service mesh.
In this session I'll cover the major features of a service mesh using Istio - which is the most popular technology in this space. I'll show you what you can do with a service mesh, how it simplifies application design and also where it adds complexity. My examples will range from new microservices designs to legacy monoliths, and you'll see what a service mesh can bring to different types of application.

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.
