Metals and Non-metals
Metals and non-metals have distinct physical and chemical properties. Physically, metals tend to be solid, shiny, malleable, and good conductors of heat and electricity, while non-metals are usually brittle solids, liquids, or gases that are poor conductors. Chemically, metals react with non-metals like sulfur to form compounds called metal sulfides, and they react with oxygen to form metal oxides, which may dissolve in water to form bases. Non-metals also react with oxygen to form oxides, which dissolve in water to form acids like sulfurous acid. Common metals and non-metals have a variety of industrial and domestic uses based on their properties.

to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover

- 6. PROPERTIES OF METAL • Aluminium is used for making beverages cans and the aluminium foil that we use to wrap our food. Aluminium, like other metals, is malleable. It can be beaten into different shapes without breaking.
- 7. • Metals are used for making cooking utensils because they are good heat conductors.
- 8. • Metals are hard. It is not easy to break a thing made of metal. The hardness of metals make them suitable materials for making vehicles, machines, and tools such as nails, hammers, spanners and screwdrivers.
- 9. • We use metals to make electrical wires because they are ductile and can conduct electricity easily. We can pull a metal into wires without breaking it because metals and ductile. Copper is usually used for making electrical wires.
