Ignatius Sancho was an African man born into slavery in 1729 who was brought to England as a child. Though his early life was difficult with abusive guardians, he had a strong desire to learn and improve himself. Supported by friends in high society, he was able to receive an education and later married and started a family. Through hard work and virtue, he was able to support his family despite facing disadvantages as a black man in 18th century England. He is remembered for his intelligence, kindness, and insightful letters that provide a unique perspective on his experiences.
