This document describes a study that used the AnnAGNPS model to evaluate potential wetland sites for nutrient reduction in the Big Bureau Creek watershed in Illinois. 80 potential wetland sites were identified covering 225 hectares. Modeling found these sites could reduce the watershed's total nitrogen load by 14% and total phosphorus load by 11%. Dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus were reduced more than particulate forms. Larger wetlands with buffers provided the greatest nutrient reductions. Properly sited wetlands are a key practice to achieve watershed nutrient reduction goals.

This study assessed environmental degradation in the Sool Plateau and Gebi Valley regions of northern Somalia. Key findings include:
- 52% of forest was lost on the Sool Plateau between 1988-2003. Grassland decreased by 40% and shrubland by 32% over this period. Bare land increased by 370%.
- The 2000-2004 drought dried up vegetation, causing significant livestock deaths and impacting pastoralist livelihoods.
- Soil erosion from deforestation, overgrazing, and lack of vegetation contributed to the expansion of gullies and degradation of soils. Weakened governance systems exacerbated environmental problems in the region.

This document summarizes research on sustainable land management practices on private estates in Scotland. It describes four individual research projects that studied 600,000 acres of land across private, community, and non-governmental organization estates. Knowledge exchange activities included stakeholder workshops to share cross-cutting themes from the research and develop a practical booklet for landowners. Over 1500 copies of the final booklet were distributed, and the research implications included further guidance for landowners and inspiration for additional studies.
Engaging stakeholders in sustainable upland estate managementJayne Glass
The document discusses how engaging stakeholders such as local communities and organizations can help address sustainability challenges facing both estates and communities through partnerships and collaboration. It provides examples of how engagement has helped estates access new skills and opportunities while empowering communities, but also notes challenges like limited resources, differing perspectives, and power imbalances that engagement must overcome. Recommendations include estates taking proactive leadership roles, using appropriate engagement methods, and potentially employing facilitators to help build community capacity and ensure productive partnerships.

Immersive Learning That Works: Research Grounding and Paths ForwardLeonel Morgado
We will metaverse into the essence of immersive learning, into its three dimensions and conceptual models. This approach encompasses elements from teaching methodologies to social involvement, through organizational concerns and technologies. Challenging the perception of learning as knowledge transfer, we introduce a 'Uses, Practices & Strategies' model operationalized by the 'Immersive Learning Brain' and ‘Immersion Cube’ frameworks. This approach offers a comprehensive guide through the intricacies of immersive educational experiences and spotlighting research frontiers, along the immersion dimensions of system, narrative, and agency. Our discourse extends to stakeholders beyond the academic sphere, addressing the interests of technologists, instructional designers, and policymakers. We span various contexts, from formal education to organizational transformation to the new horizon of an AI-pervasive society. This keynote aims to unite the iLRN community in a collaborative journey towards a future where immersive learning research and practice coalesce, paving the way for innovative educational research and practice landscapes.
Signatures of wave erosion in Titan’s coastsSérgio Sacani
The shorelines of Titan’s hydrocarbon seas trace flooded erosional landforms such as river valleys; however, it isunclear whether coastal erosion has subsequently altered these shorelines. Spacecraft observations and theo-retical models suggest that wind may cause waves to form on Titan’s seas, potentially driving coastal erosion, but the observational evidence of waves is indirect, and the processes affecting shoreline evolution on Titanremain unknown. No widely accepted framework exists for using shoreline morphology to quantitatively dis-cern coastal erosion mechanisms, even on Earth, where the dominant mechanisms are known. We combinelandscape evolution models with measurements of shoreline shape on Earth to characterize how differentcoastal erosion mechanisms affect shoreline morphology. Applying this framework to Titan, we find that theshorelines of Titan’s seas are most consistent with flooded landscapes that subsequently have been eroded bywaves, rather than a uniform erosional process or no coastal erosion, particularly if wave growth saturates atfetch lengths of tens of kilometers.

Anti-Universe And Emergent Gravity and the Dark UniverseSérgio Sacani
Recent theoretical progress indicates that spacetime and gravity emerge together from the entanglement structure of an underlying microscopic theory. These ideas are best understood in Anti-de Sitter space, where they rely on the area law for entanglement entropy. The extension to de Sitter space requires taking into account the entropy and temperature associated with the cosmological horizon. Using insights from string theory, black hole physics and quantum information theory we argue that the positive dark energy leads to a thermal volume law contribution to the entropy that overtakes the area law precisely at the cosmological horizon. Due to the competition between area and volume law entanglement the microscopic de Sitter states do not thermalise at sub-Hubble scales: they exhibit memory effects in the form of an entropy displacement caused by matter. The emergent laws of gravity contain an additional ‘dark’ gravitational force describing the ‘elastic’ response due to the entropy displacement. We derive an estimate of the strength of this extra force in terms of the baryonic mass, Newton’s constant and the Hubble acceleration scale a0 = cH0, and provide evidence for the fact that this additional ‘dark gravity force’ explains the observed phenomena in galaxies and clusters currently attributed to dark matter.

This process utilizes centrifugal force to rapidly spin samples, causing denser particles to migrate outward more quickly than lighter ones. As a result, distinct layers form within the sample tube, allowing for easy isolation and purification of target substances.
JAMES WEBB STUDY THE MASSIVE BLACK HOLE SEEDSSérgio Sacani
The pathway(s) to seeding the massive black holes (MBHs) that exist at the heart of galaxies in the present and distant Universe remains an unsolved problem. Here we categorise, describe and quantitatively discuss the formation pathways of both light and heavy seeds. We emphasise that the most recent computational models suggest that rather than a bimodal-like mass spectrum between light and heavy seeds with light at one end and heavy at the other that instead a continuum exists. Light seeds being more ubiquitous and the heavier seeds becoming less and less abundant due the rarer environmental conditions required for their formation. We therefore examine the different mechanisms that give rise to different seed mass spectrums. We show how and why the mechanisms that produce the heaviest seeds are also among the rarest events in the Universe and are hence extremely unlikely to be the seeds for the vast majority of the MBH population. We quantify, within the limits of the current large uncertainties in the seeding processes, the expected number densities of the seed mass spectrum. We argue that light seeds must be at least 103 to 105 times more numerous than heavy seeds to explain the MBH population as a whole. Based on our current understanding of the seed population this makes heavy seeds (Mseed > 103 M⊙) a significantly more likely pathway given that heavy seeds have an abundance pattern than is close to and likely in excess of 10−4 compared to light seeds. Finally, we examine the current state-of-the-art in numerical calculations and recent observations and plot a path forward for near-future advances in both domains.

› Community engagement widespread – more on educational elements.
› Greater focus on participative engagement emerging (including through
volunteering, regional groups etc.)
› Minority form of landownership – but clear emphasis on partnership
working and acting as exemplar sites.
› Importance of NGO ownership/management potentially increasing in a
time of rural change
› Potential for further work on reviewing impacts/benefits from wider
perspectives

Slide numbering matches report – so can follow report as we go through
The case studies are presented throughout the report to support the quantitative findings and we’ll bring them in through the presentation in the same way.
NOTE: this is the GIS data.
Colours correspond to map colours.
Doesn’t account for all land under management agreements (LEASED OR UNDER AGREEMENT) by the RSPB
Some other discrepancies explained in the report
This table is the basis of the remaining GIS analysis
‘Land under agreement’ includes land leased to the organisation and/or land managed by agreement. For the RSPB, this figure also includes land where sole sporting rights are held.
with particularly large areas evident in the Cairngorms, the Flow Country and the West Highlands.
Note: This mean figure has been reduced by the presence within the dataset of a number of relatively small NTS properties, including built properties (e.g. listed buildings).
NNR DISPORPORTIONALY HIGH
NGO owned and managed land is over 12 times more prevalent in areas designated as National Nature Reserves
This proportional imbalance is also evident (to a lesser extent) in the case of all other conservation designations.
Over 50% has at least 2 designations, over 30% have three or more and 20% have 4 or more
Particularly high levels of overlapping designations are apparent in the Flow Country and in the Cairngorms.
In contrast, 40% of land owned and managed by NGOs is not designated under any form of natural heritage designation – in total 210 NGO owned and managed sites have some form of designation on them
Key message 3: This demonstrates the comparatively high natural heritage value and national and international importance of significant areas of NGO owned and managed land.
Key message 4: In total, 48% of NGO owned and managed land is also designated as National Scenic Area, with NGO owned and managed land again accounting for a disproportional amount (9.6%) of the total area of NSA designated land.
Employment, access/interpretation, visitors, vols, direct spend
On average, site-related employment accounts for between 20% and 30% of all staff employed by the organisation.
Many sites employ a range of full-time, permanent members of staff, while others employ site managers who have responsibility for several sites. Some sites employ quite high numbers e.g. 21 permanent staff on Mar Lodge.
BRIEF
Site employs: wardens, scientific researchers, shop staff, a stalker, a ghillie, gate attendants, forestry workers and hospitality staff
Main point: even single sites can have a considerable impact on the local economy.
Other sources of employment are jobs for contractors engaged on the site; jobs supported by the local spending of staff and contractors and buying supplies; and jobs with the local timber and venison dealers supported by the site's production.
The reserve produces, processes and markets goods, including forestry products and venison.
All of them employ rangers/site managers (FT/PT/seasonal) and volunteers provide support
Access is core objectives and activity
Path development/maintenance important (NTS manages 650km of footpaths and has restored 100k of upland footpaths) – vols also involved in this
Interpretive facilities widespread (Glencoe: 120,000-150,000 and Loch Garten Osprey Centre: 30000-40000)
13 woods in an urban setting
Improve access and upgrade – to make people feel safer and appreciate their natural heritage
Six regular vols (Bellsquarry) – Bellsquarry pond recently restored in partnership with the local community.
Woodland Learning Project through BOWL – encouraging people to enjoy woodland in their local area – working with teachers to remove barriers to working outdoors. 126 teachers trained and 7000 trees planted by children.
Interpretive
Peri-urban
Visitor Centre
8-10 weekly vols carry out tasks on the reserve
Over 40 vols man the Operation Peregrine
Regularly visited by high numbers of people, including walkers, climbers, nature watchers and other recreationalists and sightseers.
NGO land includes some of the most well-known and heavily visited sites in Scotland, including a number of iconic mountain areas such as Glencoe and Dalness, West Affric, Torridon, Ben Lawers (NTS), Ben Nevis, Schiehallion and Sandwood Bay (JMT).
But also – some very important urban and per-urban sites (such as Falls of Clyde/Livingston) and cultural sites (St Kilda)
Good example of level of visitor numbers some sites experience is Ben Nevis
160,000 visit the estate annually
Work parties also engaged in path management, litter picking etc.
Should say that The Scottish Government recognises that volunteering is a key component of strong communities and volunteers contribute significantly to the work of landowning NGOs across a number of activities in Scotland.
High numbers of vols associated with the sites
Equates to average of 14 vols per site who worked an average 59 hours each
Total estimated 318,600 hours
Good example of extent of vol activity, particularly on some sites
Vols contribute to the VMP and UPM
Reason possible: very active ranger service.
Last thing
Taking the £37.5 million figure alone, this equates to an average spend of £181 per hectare on land owned and managed by NGOs.
NTS much higher (built properties)
These levels of direct spend are competitive when contrasted with traditional land uses (e.g. grouse shooting and deer stalking). There is more in the report on that.
Data on indirect spend not available but case studies and wider work demonstrate it is likely to be considerable
For example, in the area surrounding Dundreggan Estate near Invermoriston, Trees for Life staff and their conservation volunteers spend an estimated £49,600 annually on local services and accommodation.
