This study examined the effects of non-surgical periodontal therapy on levels of the inflammatory markers IL-6 and CRP in patients with chronic periodontitis. It found that non-surgical periodontal therapy significantly reduced clinical periodontal parameters like pocket depth and gained clinical attachment. It also found that therapy significantly reduced levels of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-6, but did not significantly impact levels of the acute phase protein CRP. The study concludes that periodontal therapy can lower systemic inflammation by reducing cytokine levels, but further research is still needed.
