The document is a presentation by Jez Humble on the secrets of high performance IT. Some of the key points discussed include:
- Chef is an automation and delivery platform used to build, manage, and deploy infrastructure and applications.
- The highest correlations with IT performance are having code/configurations in version control, getting failure alerts from monitoring, daily code merges by developers, and having win-win relationships between dev and ops teams.
- Characteristics of high performing IT include proactive monitoring, peer-reviewed change approval, version controlling everything, high trust culture between dev and ops.
- Continuous integration, deployment pipelines, and building quality in from the start are important concepts.
- Organizational culture

Webinar: Lean Enterprise Essentials: Configuration Management and Version Con...Perforce
Configuration management is a vital ingredient in creating high performance IT. But how you implement it matters. Join Jez Humble, Continuous Delivery expert and author of Lean Enterprise, as he shares principles that enable high throughput and stability and the configuration management practices behind them. You'll learn the essentials of lean configuration management, setting a solid foundation for bringing lean practices to your organization.
Recently I was asked to explain what dev-ops is at a large enterprise software vendor undergoing transformation.
In these slides, I present the concepts, tools and mindset that drive DevOPS.
Continuous Delivery presents a compelling vision of builds that are automatically deployed and tested until ready for production.
Most teams aren't there yet. Some never want to go that far. Others want to push the envelope further.
This deck presents a model for scoring yourself on the continuum and examples of how companies can decide what parts of CD to adopt first, later and not at all.

The world of IT is shifting rapidly towards DevOps with analysts predicting the majority of companies will adopt DevOps practices in the next few years. In fact, in a recent study on DevOps by International Data Corp. (IDC), they believe that DevOps will be adopted (in either practice or discipline) by 80% of Global 1000 organizations by 2019!
Forming a DevOps team seems like a natural step, but the idea of creating a dedicated DevOps team has ignited anger in the community. Why? What's the concern? Is a DevOps team evil? Completely necessary? A necessary Evil?
Join IBM UrbanCode's Eric Minick to learn the pitfalls of creating bad DevOps teams, and successful approaches of good ones. Along the way, we’ll explore other heresies such as using tools to change culture.
Practical Use Case: How Dosh Uses Feature Experiments To Accelerate Mobile De...Optimizely
Engineering organizations at companies know to anticipate bugs when they are about to launch a new product but, what tools can they use to reduce the blast radius and mitigate potential risks? Now, companies are thinking about preventative methods and safeguards they can put in place to make sure they deliver frictionless experiences to their customers with measurable results. In this session, you'll learn how to use feature flags and experiments across your stack (including mobile apps) to safely release meaningful features to your customers.
Newly appointed Optimizely CTO, Lawrence Bruhmuller, will kick off Developer Summit discussing the new normals in software development. After decades of leading and scaling engineering teams for high growth startups and large tech companies, Lawrence has seen the same problems crop up repeatedly for technical teams. There is a new way of delivering software that makes it possible to move fast and get it right. That new way is Progressive Delivery & Experimentation. When Progressive Delivery & Experimentation are used together, you have an efficient system for validating both quality and customer engagement across your development lifecycle. Lawrence will discuss the key principles driving software development innovation, how our engineering team puts this into practice, and the success he’s seen at other companies.
DevOps Beyond the Buzzwords: What it Means to Embrace the DevOps LifestyleMark Heckler
Session presented at CodeMash 2016.
DevOps is a hot topic, but it’s a bit ambiguous. What do developers really need to know about DevOps? What is it? What ISN’T it? What difference does it make? We’ll start by examining “DevOps”, what it means to embrace it, and the various personnel involved. We consider the potential benefits associated with a DevOps approach and the risks associated with adopting it…and with not adopting it. We take a quick look at some of the tools and platforms that can be used to implement a productive DevOps environment, including (but not limited to):
* Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) software
* Infrastructure Build Automation tools
* Virtualization, Containerization, and Cloud options
Finally, we run a live scenario using several of the tools discussed to demonstrate the key components of a DevOps-committed lifestyle. We start from nothing, using available tooling to build the target platform in a scriptable, repeatable fashion…then demonstrate effective use of CI/CD software for a more streamlined and effective software build/test/deploy cycle…and finally show how containers and cloud services form the foundation upon which everything else is built.
Tech Mahindra and CollabNet have worked together on a number of mission-critical projects, and over the course of their partnership have developed unique expertise in lifecycle, development-to-production metrics. Gain an understanding not only of what metrics are important, but also practical approaches to building reports and dashboards that deliver a single-pane view of all your delivery pipelines across the enterprise.
Participants will learn:
KPI’s of end-to-end dashboard driven development and delivery
Best practices for metrics in Agile / DevOps environments
Role of technology frameworks for integrated planning and reporting
IBM DevOps Enabling continuous integration & deliveryRoberto Pozzi
This presentation is the result of several engagements with clients on the topic of software lifecycle management and continuous delivery.

Elisabeth Hendrickson, VP of Engineering, Pivotal’s Big Data Suite
Fifteen years ago I was running a traditional QA department, and I had a horrifying realization: the better I got at my job, the worse I made things for the organization as a whole. This counter-intuitive realization spurred me on a journey to understand the relationship between testing and quality, and ultimately to the study of feedback loops in software development processes. Ultimately I found my way to Extreme Programming, and now work at Pivotal where we practice a particularly opinionated form of it. In this talk you’ll hear about my journey from the traditional silos with inherently long feedback latency to my current reality of increasingly tight feedback loops, and the lessons I’ve learned along the way.

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” – Aristotle You have been doing agile for a few years now. With a regular cadence you have retrospectives and a lot of problems and great improvement opportunities are raised but you don’t seem to really improve. Let us put your retrospectives on steroids. Start using Toyota Kata! Building on the power of habits, Toyota Kata will help you build a daily continuous learning and improvement culture, a kaizen culture. In this intense and interactive 90 min session, you will be introduced to the two main Kata* of the Toyota Kata, the Improvement Kata and Coaching Kata. We will experience the fundamental behavior patterns at the core of the Toyota Kata methodology: the rapid experimental cycles and the Coaching Dialog. You will gain direct insight into the power of the Improvement Kata and Coaching Kata through repeated personal practice. You will experience how these daily habits or routines will help you to strive towards a state of awesomeness in small experiments focused on learning. Small teams will work together striving to achieve ever higher levels of awesomeness using the Improvement Kata and Coaching Kata, thereby gaining practical hands-on familiarity with Toyota Kata. Learning outcomes: · Provide an introduction to the core routines, mindset, and behavioral practices of Improvement Kata and Coaching Kata. · Allow you to experience the core routines of the of the Improvement Kata and Coaching Kata through interactive, hands-on exercises Who should attend? The target audience are Lean/Agile Coaches, Scrum Masters, managers and anyone interested in continuous learning and improvement methods. Anyone can attend. Prerequisites No prior knowledge needed. If you want to prepare the following two books are highly recommended: Toyota Kata: Managing People for Improvement, Adaptiveness and Superior Results by Mike Rother and Lean Enterprise: How High Performance Organizations Innovate at Scale by Jez Humble, Joanne Molesky, Barry O’Reilly Time to stop collecting problems and start forming new habits of learning and improving! (*) Kata means pattern, routine, habits or way of doing things. Kata is about creating a fast “muscle memory” of how to take action instantaneously in a situation without having to go through a slower logical procedure. A Kata is something that you practice over and over striving for perfection. If the Kata itself is relative static, the content of the Kata, as we execute it is modified based on the situation and context in real-time as it happens. A Kata as different from a routine in that it contains a continuous self-renewal process.

Building and Scaling High Performing Technology Organizations by Jez Humble a...Agile India
High performing organizations don't trade off quality, throughput, and reliability: they work to improve all of these and use their software delivery capability to drive organizational performance. In this talk, Jez presents the results from DevOps Research and Assessment's five-year research program, including how continuous delivery and good architecture produce higher software delivery performance, and how to measure culture and its impact on IT and organizational culture. They explain the importance of knowing how (and what) to measure so you focus on what’s important and communicate progress to peers, leaders, and stakeholders. Great outcomes don’t realize themselves, after all, and having the right metrics gives us the data we need to keep getting better at building, delivering, and operating software systems.

Continuous Testing and Automated Deployment.
Developing and delivering applications in a repeatable way, with the expected quality is a great challenge these days. In order to maximize business value at-the-speed-of-business, initiatives are being driven both by the development or delivery teams and by operations. They each have their own focus and specifics, but in essence they are both centered around: Collaboration and integration, automation, standardization and governance.
Continuous Testing: A Key to DevOps SuccessTechWell
As IT organizations adopt a DevOps strategy, continuous testing (CT) becomes a key ingredient of the DevOps ecosystem. CT enables faster release cycles, more changes per release, upfront isolation of risks, and reduced operations costs. The approach to scale the traditional automation testing infrastructure, test environments, and test data management requires a culture shift using new tools and techniques. Sujay Honnamane discusses a CT strategy for aspiring and already implemented DevOps organizations. Sujay shares examples of tools, techniques, and practical solutions that include continuous integration using the Jenkins CI server, service virtualization through CA Lisa tools, automated code coverage analysis to create impact-based tests, automated test script load balancing for effective use of test environments, and faster test cycles, providing a holistic approach/workflow for CT. Sujay and his teams have successfully implemented CT for several clients in their DevOps journey to achieve a repeatable and highly predictable software delivery process.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
