Editor's Notes
Welcome to The Secret Ingredients of Powerful Online Presentations. Today’s session is offered to help you understand what you will need to conduct effective and exciting webinars. I am Fran Simon, Chief Engagement Officer of Engagement Strategies, a consulting company that offers marketing and strategic services to nonprofit organizations and small businesses. I’m thrilled that you’ve joined me today to learn more about webninars. I’ve invited Matthew Fox, a talented recent college graduate with a marketing and HR background to join us today to help manage the session
Today’s menu is all about helping you determine if webinars make sense for your organization and what you need to produce them. We’ll spend about a third of the time focused on the basics…just learning more about the medium. We’ll also devote quite a bit of tine to learning more about various software features from a very high level. The goal is to give you a foundation of what to look for in software and a bit about how the functions are used. The rest of the time will be devoted to the tips and tricks that I have learned through my experience presenting via webinar, and on your questions.
I want to spend a couple of minutes learning about you and what you already know about webinars. This is going to help me gauge the pacing of the session. Your screen will changes as I launch the polls and results. That’s normal. Just stand by.First, let’s find out what types of roles you play in your organizations…..Now I want to find out more about your knowledge of webinars…..It will help to know want the group’s priorities in case we have to cut some of the content.
I want to target our thinking today. You’ve probably heard people refer to online events with various terms. You might have heard online conferencing, online meetings, webinars, elearning, online collaboration, webcasts, online conferences. Today we’re just going to laser in on webinars, but you should know that most of the software that offers webinar functionality also include functions for online meetings and webcasts. Sometimes the functionality is modularized and sold at various price points. More about that later.
Every webinar includes visuals, sound, and interactivity. Because you can’t see your audience in a webinar like you can in a live session, it’s critical that you do everything you can do to ensure that all three of these elements are as engaging as they can be.
This is a good time to stop for questions….. Any questions about basic webinar definitions, elements of webinars or roles?
My guess is you are here today because you already understand the value of webinars and the various reasons why you would want to use them for your organization, but I would be remiss if there wasn’t one slide devoted to the various uses. Remember, we’re focused on webinars, not webcasts or collaborative online meetings. The list would be much longer if we wanted to discuss those. Most of the time, these objectives overlap. For example, sharing your expertise helps you establish credibility as a thought leader in your industry, but it also will help you promote your products and generate leads.Using webinars as a lead generation tool for sales and marketing purposes is a proven and effective technique. But, regardless of your objectives for webinars, you will generate leads. People will register and you will have access to their contact information. That information is gold for your organization. How you handle those leads is critical. We’ll talk about following up with webinar participants later, but just remember that webinars let you reach out to people and bring them into your world. You might have thought of some other ways to use webinars. If you have ideas, please raise your hand and I will open your mic so we can hear from you. Or if you are more comfortable, chat your idea in the question pane, and Matthew will read it.
There are a lot of commercial and nonprofit organizations selling content through webinars. I’m really excited to see the webinars used as a part of social enterprise strategies in the nonprofit world. A lot of organizations are doing a great job with this technique. And there are also many commercial organizations selling content via webinars. It’s a good strategy, but just like with every other type of product or service, you have to consider the market, the competitive landscape, pricing, and sales models before you jump in. The price range and sales models for webinars runs the gamut from the sublime to the ridiculous. They range from $25 to $ 200. Some of the best models are subscription or webinar libraries that are sold in a bundle with access for a limited time. But other people are having success selling one at a time. What’s interesting is that the dollar value is not necessarily an indication of how good the content will be. And, some of the highest priced presenters will also occasionally provide webinars at no cost.Just remember: You cannot have your cake and eat it, too. If you are selling something or asking for a donation or trying to soclicit volunteers or advocate using webinars, you cant charge for the session. And, regardless, you have to provide value for the time people spend with you. It has to be good content because they are taking the time out of their day to spend it with you.If you do a quick Google search for webinars..revnue, you’’ll that there are a lot of people who will tell you or sell you a book or other content on how to sell webinars. Some are legit, some not. I think this a topic for a webinar in and of itself. I’m thinking of inviting some of the more successful people I know to join me for a webinar on this topic…. If you are interested, in hearing more about this, please raise your hand. I just want to get a sense of whether people are interested or not.
It’s important to point out, if for nothing but planning purposes that free webinars have higher rates of registration but lower attendance, and webinars for a fee have lower rates of registration but higher rates of attendance. It’s no surprise that when people have to part with money, they will make sure they attend! The higher the price, the lower the registration and the higher the attendance rate.
Let’s stop for a moment to find out your objectives for webinars. Let’s try another poll.
This is a good time to stop for questions….. Any questions about objectives, lead generation, or selling content through webinars?
Now we’re getting to the main ingredients….. Every webinar has content, equipment, software, audio, and every webinar requires time to prepare. And, there are a couple of extra special ingredients I recommend. Let’s take a look….
