We are going to listen to a selection entitled “The
Sandwich Island” by Samuel L. Clemens.
Samuel L. Clemens is popularly known as Mark Twain.
He is an American writer whose works are famous
because of its adventurous themes. Among his most
noted works are “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and
“The Huckleberry Finn”.
You have to listen to the selection carefully for I will give
comprehension questions afterwards.
(Teacher reads the selection twice.)

clothing not like in those of San
Francisco‟s “roughs and rowdies”,
streets are filled with happy people
not busy ones, and the scenes are
pricelessly more beautiful than the
Golden City‟s.

“perfumed air” and all, is a
remarkable feeling someone would
not want to end.

information read fused with our prior knowledge or our
knowledge of the subject.

 Interpret the last sentence of the selection. Draw a picture
of how you interpret the image being portrayed by it.

IV. EVALUATION
I. Directions:The teacher will read the article below and the students will answer the questions that
follow.
THE HISTORY OF HAWAII
The first settlers came across the ocean from the Marquesas Islands, a group of islands in the south east
almost at the equator. They came in big canoes, 100ft long, with twin hulls, whose sails were made of the
fiber of coconuts. They brought the first domestic animals with them - pigs and chickens.
Other Polynesians followed in the 13th or 14th centuries. They came from Tahiti. A feudal system with
powerful chiefs (the later kings), priests and ministers developed who ruled the four bigger islands.
In 1778 the English Captain Cook discovered the islands. He called them Sandwich Islands after his
superior, Sandwich, the first Lord of the Admiralty. (An Earl of the family of the Sandwichs, John
Montagu, invented the buttered toast which has been called sandwich to the present day. (The Hawaiian
Islands, however, show only a remote connection with sandwiches) Anyway in some nautical charts you
can still find the Hawaiian Islands as "Sandwich Islands".
The relationship between Cook„s sailors and the natives was very friendly in the beginning. They
exchanged coins, muskets and nails for drinking water and meat. The sailors had no problem to get into
contact with the female population. They were fascinated by their beauty whereas the Polynesians were
attracted by the utensils made of metal they saw on the two strange ships. Unfortunately they pinched
some of them. Cook was really upset about this and he had the Hawaiian chief, Kalaniopuu, arrested. As a
reaction to this the indigenous people stabbed him to death.
In spite of all this the islands became an important base for international shipping routes.

PROCEDURE Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity Routinary Activity Class, let us pray. Good morning/afternoon class! (Checking of Attendance) A.Pre-Reading Do you want to spend vacation in any place in the world? What place is it and why? Okay! So there are really lots of beautiful places in the world where you could spend your vacation. Who among you want to go to Hawaii? I have here pictures of some things which represent Hawaii. Can you name the things you see on these pictures? (Student praying) Good morning/ afternoon Maam! Yes, Maam! Answers may vary. Maam! There‟s a hula dancers!
  • 3. Very good! Very good! Very good! Very good! These are only some of the beautiful things that we can see in Hawaii. Hawaii is really a good place to visit. Do you agree? B. Vocabulary Development This morning/afternoon, we are going to discuss a selection that will help us to be familiarized with the culture of Hawaii. But before that let us first unlock the difficult words for the better understanding of the selection.   • 4. C. ListeningPhase We are going to listen to a selection entitled “The Sandwich Island” by Samuel L. Clemens. Samuel L. Clemens is popularly known as Mark Twain. He is an American writer whose works are famous because of its adventurous themes. Among his most noted works are “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and “The Huckleberry Finn”. You have to listen to the selection carefully for I will give comprehension questions afterwards. (Teacher reads the selection twice.) D. Post-Reading Now, let us check how well you have understood the selection. 1. What is the title of the selection? 2. Who wrote the selection? 3. How many miles did it take the author to reach the islands? 4. What were the first things that he saw when he reached the island? 5. What place is being described by the author? 6. To what place does he compare Hawaii? 7. How does Hawaii differs from San Francisco? 8. What does the last sentence mean? Does it contribute to the theme of the essay? How? 9. If you‟re going to choose between Hawaii and San Francisco, where would you want to spend your vacation? Why? 10. So, in what ways do you think does the physical condition of a place affect the people‟s way of life? - The Sandwich Island - Samuel L. Clemens - Two thousand miles - beach, trees, cabins, and Honolulu - Hawaii - San Francisco - In terms of the houses, Hawaii has simpler and less sophisticated dwellings compared to those in San Francisco, people are comely in nature and clothes are cool and refreshing to the eyes, Hawaii is rich in flowering plants that smells so fragrant, women are dressed in fine clothing not like in those of San Francisco‟s “roughs and rowdies”, streets are filled with happy people not busy ones, and the scenes are pricelessly more beautiful than the Golden City‟s. - It means that sitting in front of that wonderful scene provided by the “perfumed air” and all, is a remarkable feeling someone would not want to end. - Answer may vary. - If the place you live in is peaceful and clean and bountiful, your physical as well as emotional state will also be filled with positive energy.
  • 5. 11. Based from the description given by Clemens, what can you conclude about Hawaii? How did you arrive in that conclusion? So basically, we make conclusions by making a judgment or an opinion or a decision after considering all the information read fused with our prior knowledge or our knowledge of the subject. Do you now understand the selection? Do you have any question? E. Enrichment Differentiated Group Activities Since you have no question, let us now proceed to the group activities. I will divide you in five groups (the teacher will divide the class). Choose your leader and please submit ¼ sheet of pad paper indicating the list of your group members (the leaders will draw the task for the groups). Please be reminded that you only have 15 minutes to do your task. Then you have to present it finished or not. Is that clear? Okay! You may now start. Task 1:  Write a letter of commendation to the state Governor of Hawaii. Tell him how good their place is. Task 2:  Make a post-card showing the beauty of Hawaii. Task 3:  Prepare a mock interview with a foreigner from San Francisco who is visiting Hawaii. Task 4:  Interpret the last sentence of the selection. Draw a picture of how you interpret the image being portrayed by it. - Hawaii is an ideal place to live in. Given all the descriptions from the text. Yes, Maam! None, Maam! The students follow.   • 7. THE HISTORY OF HAWAII The first settlers came across the ocean from the Marquesas Islands, a group of islands in the south east almost at the equator. They came in big canoes, 100ft long, with twin hulls, whose sails were made of the fiber of coconuts. They brought the first domestic animals with them - pigs and chickens. Other Polynesians followed in the 13th or 14th centuries. They came from Tahiti. A feudal system with powerful chiefs (the later kings), priests and ministers developed who ruled the four bigger islands. In 1778 the English Captain Cook discovered the islands. He called them Sandwich Islands after his superior, Sandwich, the first Lord of the Admiralty. (An Earl of the family of the Sandwichs, John Montagu, invented the buttered toast which has been called sandwich to the present day. (The Hawaiian Islands, however, show only a remote connection with sandwiches) Anyway in some nautical charts you can still find the Hawaiian Islands as "Sandwich Islands". The relationship between Cook„s sailors and the natives was very friendly in the beginning. They exchanged coins, muskets and nails for drinking water and meat. The sailors had no problem to get into contact with the female population. They were fascinated by their beauty whereas the Polynesians were attracted by the utensils made of metal they saw on the two strange ships. Unfortunately they pinched some of them. Cook was really upset about this and he had the Hawaiian chief, Kalaniopuu, arrested. As a reaction to this the indigenous people stabbed him to death. In spite of all this the islands became an important base for international shipping routes. 1. Who were the first settlers of the islands? 2. Where did the Polynesians come from? 3.
