 Principle
“Infants learn oral language from other human
role models through a process involving
imitation, rewards, and practice. Human role
models in an infant’s environment provide the
stimuli and rewards.”
The Important Features of Behaviorism theory:
 Behaviorism theory dwells on spoken language.
 Behaviorism theory is the habit formation
theory of language teaching and learning,
reminding us the learning of structural grammar.
 The stimulus-response chain is a pure case
conditioning.
Positive transfer
Negative transfer
 The major factor of interference as the speaker
is influenced by both of the source and the
target language is bilingualism.
 Example :
Students with Bahasa as their mother tongue,
tend to transfer the knowledge when speaking in
English.

 The cognitive theory underlies the comprehension and
production that develop in the mind of the learner.
 The important features of cognitive theory:
o Knowing rather than responding is important.
o Knowledge is organized and integrated into mental
structures.
o Learner is seen as the one who acts, constructs or plans
rather than simply receiving stimulus and giving response.
 L1 translation is the most effective ways of
conveying meaning of unknown word.
 The dictionary use particularly the
bilingualised dictionary.
 A theory about the development of human cognitive and higher
mental function.
 Basically, this theory related to culture which has 2 meanings:
o Broad sense
o Narrow sense
 Culture is divided into two types :
o Local/home
o Target
Mediation
Regulation
Internalization
ZPD
Verbal thought
Activity theory
 The notion that learning occurs effectively
when students interact with one another in
foreign language classrooms, yet socio-
cultural should not be viewed as a theory just
for learners.
