Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. NarrativeAnd
Story
Opening of the film – Teenagers Katie and Becca discuss an urban legend about a videotape; whoever watches
it dies seven days later. Katie confesses that she watched the tape with her friends the previous week. That
night, Katie dies and Becca goes insane.
Equilibrium – The main story is about Rachel who is a journalist, investigating the death that was shown in the
opening. She rents the same cabin where the two girls and their friends watched the tapes. and watches the
tape; it contains gruesome and disturbing imagery. After the tape ends, she receives a phone call from an
unknown female who whispers "seven days".
Dis- Equilibrium - Rachel recruits the help of her video analyst ex-boyfriend Noah. He watches the tape and
Rachel makes him a copy so they can both investigate where it came from. Rachel finds their son, Aidan,
watching the videotape. She discovers hidden imagery of a lighthouse and identifies a woman on the tape: a
horse breeder, Anna Morgan, who committed suicide after some of her horses drowned themselves off Moesko
Island. She discovers hidden imagery of a lighthouse and identifies a woman on the tape: a horse breeder,
Anna Morgan, who committed suicide after some of her horses drowned themselves off Moesko Island. On the
island, she discovers Anna had an adopted daughter, Samara, but Richard denies it. Rachel speaks to the island
doctor, who explains that Anna adopted Samara due to her infertility. Samara possessed the ability
to psychically etch images onto objects and into minds, tormenting her parents and their horses.
New Equilibrium - Rachel sneaks into the Morgan house and watches the missing video, which shows Samara
explaining her powers during a psychotherapy session. Richard discovers her and strikes her. Noah arrives and
he and Rachel enter the barn. In a loft converted to a bedroom to isolate Samara from her mother, they find an
image of a tree behind the wallpaper; Rachel recognizes it as a tree at the Shelter Mountain Inn. Rachel returns
with Noah to the cabin at Shelter Mountain Inn, where they are led to a well beneath the floorboards. They
remove the lid and Rachel is pushed inside. A hand grabs her, and Rachel experiences a vision of Anna
suffocating and dumping Samara into the well, where she survived for seven days. Samara's corpse surfaces
from the water. After Rachel is rescued from the well, they arrange a proper burial for Samara. Noah tells
Rachel that they are now safe as more than seven days have passed since she watched the videotape. Rachel
returns with Noah to the cabin at Shelter Mountain Inn, where they are led to a well beneath the floorboards.

4. Mise-en-scene
Location – the opening of the film is set in a family home, the first sequence
set in the bedroom while the rest of the opening is the characters moving
through the home. This location may have been chosen to enforce the idea
that nowhere is safe and that it could be any group of teenager who can be
attacked, I think that the fact that setting is a suburban area shows the
audience that the two girls are normal girls.
Lighting – The colour of the opening is very dark and green giving the
location a cold and unhomely look. The two actors have strong shadows
across their faces. The in-shot lighting that is shown in the opening is minimal.
Costume – The costumes in the opening reflect the characters, they are young
teenagers who are dressed in school girls clothing, the colours that are used
for the costumes are black and white making the characters seem like they are
very black and white (good and bad) characters however the characters are
not the simple first girl stereotype
Props – props that were used In the opening were quite minimal the use of
the pillow showed the innocence and the child like nature of the characters
while the use of the phone is used as a scare and it also ties in with the lore of
the film.
Movement of actors – the two girls movement is quite fluid at the start of the
opening as they believe that they are in a safe location, however when the
characters are split up she is quite stiff, slow and careful.
5. Camera
Most of the camera shots are quite static as the opening begins
there is quite a lot of use of zooms into the characters faces to
empathise what they are saying. In the opening the characters are
presented in either two shots or mid shots. The movement of the
start is quite smooth which gives it an effect of care free and casual
conversation between the girls. The zooms could have been created
through the use of the settings on a camera of physically moving
the camera through putting it on a track.
As the two characters move through the house to the kitchen where
the phone is located the camera shot sticks to the wall as it shifts
focus form the ringing phone to the girls walking in frame this shot
is used to create importance to the object. There's is also a lot of use
of long corridors and the idea of an open area. As the main victim of
the opening is investigating the sound of buzzing from the tv a main
shot of a shaky handheld point of view shot is used. This gave the
effect of walking into the unknow and realism. A good cinematic
shot within the opening is at the end where character was walking
up the stairs and there is a puddle of water on the floor, the angle
was a low angle shot. This added mystery to what was happening.
6. Editing
The pace of the editing was quite slow and remained slow until the
very end this was to build tension within the atmosphere. The pace
of the film remained the same until the very end. The pace of the
film had changed for the pay off of all the tension the opening was
creating. There is a use of company logo at he start of the film while
the films style of glitch is incorporate into this. There was on use of
CGI or Practical effects while smart editing was use to cut between
the scene to footage of the ring video creating a almost jump scare
with the quickly cut ending.
7. Sound
We hear the diegetic sound of the TV, and see the
reflection of the TV screen in the window. The character
stops still in action. Showing the audience that the sound
had effected the character and that it was a notable
sound. There wasn’t prominent music within the horror
opening this lack of Non-diegetic sounds make the scene
become even more atmospheric.
9. Genre and
Purpose
The genre of the opening and the whole film is Horror, while the
sub genres of the film are supernatural and also has themes of J-
horror because the film was adapted from a 1998 Japanese horror
film ‘Ring’.
The purpose of the film is to remake the original J-horror film for
American audiences. While also grabbing audiences with this unique
concept which would be to new to the casual American film
watchers. The opening engages the audience by keeping everything
that is going on a mystery, the audience dose not get to see the
main antagonist in the opening, while the static of the tv adds
interest as the audience knows that something had happened buy
the do not know what .
10. Generic
Conventions
and
Characteristics
The film follows the codes and characteristics of a supernatural
horror film well, the opening does show various different aspects of
a supernatural horror film however as it is an opening scene the film
does not give much information of what is going on in the film. The
film also has aspects of psychological horror as the atmosphere and
feel of the film is scary in its own right . The opening also alludes to
the code and convention sex equals death as on of the characters
are talking about being with a boy. The characters also represent
the promiscuous blond character type however the character do
not fully fit this stereotype.
11. Narrative
Structures
including
application of
narrative Models
andTheory and
use of
Characterization
The narrative is linear in the opening scene and is single stranded as
it only follows a single plot thread, however because the scene is an
opening scene a lot is left open for the main film.
12. Audience
Expectations
and
Interpretation
The target audience for this film would be teenagers and young
adults near the age range of 16 to 21 as a younger group would be
more interested in the genre of film. I think that the film would be
more appealing to the female demographic as it stars a female lead
while the socio economical grouping would be in group E as the
teens would be in part time or non working in the social class this
class is usually for casual or lowest grade workers.. Within Rubicams
4 C’s I think that the audience for this film would be associated with
the Aspiers this is a group who are aspiring to become something
and make it up the social ladder this can also be seen as wanting to
acquire a certain taste in, film, art and music.
The film subverts the expectation of the audience with the two
character as they both look like the girl next door character type
however their actions resembled the blond girl who dies first in a
horror film. The Film also built up suspense and made the audience
expect a scare however it did not come until the end of the opening.
