The Nobel Peace Prize is one of five annual Nobel Prizes established by Swedish chemist and inventor Alfred Nobel. The other Nobel Prizes are awarded for achievements in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, and Literature. Alfred Nobel established the prizes in his will to recognize individuals who have conferred the greatest benefit on humanity. As a chemist who invented dynamite and ballistite, Nobel hoped to establish a legacy of promoting peace with the Nobel Peace Prize after his inventions were used for military purposes.
