This document summarizes Lynn Silipigni Connaway's presentation on how libraries need to think about serving users within the context of their daily lives and workflows. It discusses how users now fragment their attention across multiple devices and information sources. Libraries need to meet users where they are by embedding services within users' existing information behaviors and social networks, providing services for what people actually do rather than what libraries think people should do, and making the library a part of users' social and information networks.

The Nebraska Library Commission will make up to $25,000 available to accredited Nebraska public libraries for internships through the 2017 Nebraska Library Internship Grant Program. The 2017 grant process mirrors the 2016 Internship Grant Program. The program works to introduce high school and college students to the varied and exciting work of Nebraska Libraries. The internships are intended to function as a recruitment tool in helping the student to view the library as a viable career opportunity while providing the public library with the finances (up to $1,000 per library or branch) to provide stipends to the student(s). In the past student interns helped libraries expand programs, complete projects, improve websites, teach classes, expand social media use, while bringing in fresh ideas to the library. Grant applications will be accepted electronically between October 21 and December 21, 2016. In this session, supervisors from select 2016 participating libraries will share their experiences from earlier this year--including successes and lessons learned. Also hear from a past grant-funded intern (who is now a full-time library employee) to learn about the opportunity from their perspective. This session will also introduce the upcoming 2017 grant opportunity for internships, offered by the Nebraska Library Commission in partnership with Nebraska’s Regional Library Systems and supported in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Nebraska Library Commission.

Presentation delivered at both the 2008 Nebraska Library Association Paraprofessional Section Spring Meeting and at the 2008 NLA/NEMA Fall Conference. Abstract: Every library has invisible barriers that dampen cooperation, from the division between public services and technical services to the division between paraprofessionals and librarians. Communication and cross-training are the keys to bridging those divides. Communication takes many forms, and multiple approaches reinforce each other. Casual communication includes conversation with people from other departments, such as hallway chats and informal meetings. Formal, library-wide communication includes the use of e-mail aliases, discussion lists, blogs, wikis, meetings, staff forums, and newsletters. Cross-training comes in three flavors: positional clarification (telling), positional modeling (showing), and positional rotation (doing). Any of these styles can enhance understanding of one another's jobs. Even library-shaking events such as strategic planning and departmental reorganizations can be used as opportunities to build alliances between departments. A library where employees regularly talk and interact across departmental lines is much stronger than a mere collection of departments.

This presentation combines highlights from two 2014 ER&L presentations: Never Mind I’ll Just Buy It: Why Users Won’t Jump Through Your Hoops and DDA 2.0: Evidence-Based Selection of E-Books.
Via an entertaining compare and contrast, this presentation explores disconnects between e-books via library PDA and third-party platforms compared to “real world” resources such as Kindle e-books.
Then, the presenter will show how UConn Libraries PDA program is quite successful from an acquisitions perspective, but access to DRM-encased e-books is a less than ideal user experience and share how UConn Libraries is working to provide access to thousands of DRM-free e-books while only purchasing titles with highest use.
The purpose is to illustrate how library resources and commercial resources aim to meet user needs in radically different ways, and how libraries can fix it.

Thanks in part to efficient search engines such as Google, on-line reading has become for many the primary way that people read. This talk will discuss how a wide range of research in web usability, psychology, education, and communication theory provides corroborating evidence that on-line reading is transforming cognition, learning, and the very nature of knowledge in some disturbing ways.

This paper presents findings of a fieldwork study that explored research practices, challenges, and directions in contemporary digital humanities scholarship. The study was conducted in the period April-October, 2010, as part of two research projects of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Oxford Internet Institute— Alflalab (http://alfalablog.huygensinstituut.nl/) and Humanities Information Practices (http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/research/?id=58). The study included observations and in-depth interviews with digital humanities scholars, policymakers, and funders, with a focus on developers and users of digital resources for humanities research. The study involved 86 participants from over 25 institutions in 5 countries. Participating institutions included: Huygens Institute; National Endowment for Humanities Office of Digital Humanities; Stanford University; University of Alberta; University of California, Berkeley; University of California, Los Angeles; University of Indiana; University of Maryland; University of Oxford; University of Virginia.
Digital Visitors and Residents: Project Feedbackjisc-elearning
Students and staff have been developing their own digital literacies for years and successfully integrating them into their social and professional activities. The Visitors and Residents project has been capturing these literacies by interviewing participants within four educational stages from secondary school to experienced scholars. Using the Visitors and Residents idea as a framework the project has been mapping what motivates individuals and groups to engage with the web for learning. We have been exploring the information-seeking and learning strategies that are evolving in both personal and professional contexts. In this presentation we will discuss these emerging ‘user owned’ literacies and how they might integrate with institutional approaches to developing digital literacies. We also will discuss the Visitors and Residents mapping process and how this could be utilised by projects as a tool for reflecting on existing and potential literacies and the development of services and systems.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
