The shark and crocodile had long fought over territory until agreeing to divide it, with the land belonging to the crocodile and sea to the shark. However, years later as the shark's fish prey fled to the river, it began hunting there secretly. When discovered by the crocodile, they quarreled over ownership of the river mouth, and engaged in an epic final battle that left them both severely wounded. They later died of their injuries, and the site of their fight was named "Surabaya" in remembrance, combining words for shark and crocodile.
