The Korean War began in 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea, starting a three year conflict. The United Nations backed South Korea while China and the Soviet Union backed North Korea. Over time, fighting seesawed back and forth across the 38th parallel border. An armistice in 1953 ended combat, though no peace treaty was signed, leaving Korea still divided along the border. The war resulted in over 2 million military and civilian casualties and devastated the infrastructure of both North and South Korea.
