Context: The Greatest Showman
premiered in December 2017. It is set
in 1850/1860 New York, and is based on
the true story of PT Barnum and how he
went from having nothing, to setting
his idea of a circus up and making
something of himself.
Narrative Structure: The Greatest
Showman has a 3 act structure which
also fits with Todorov’s theory of
equilibrium and disequilibrium. There
is also evidence of Propp’s theory
where there are different types of
characters that play to the story and
make it more interesting for the
audience.
Genre: The genres for The Greatest
Showman would be
Musical/Romance/Drama. It is
musical because it has music
throughout to help the story move
along. Romance, because there are
multiple romances that form over
the course of the film. And Drama
because of the problems and
solutions that make the film
interesting.
Target Audience: The target
audience for the film would be
families with fairly young kids and
teenagers. The film is certified as
PG so would be appropriate for
kids. On the 4Cs model the target
audience would be The Mainstream or
The Aspirer, because they are just
everyday people who want to watch a
good film but they’re also people
who will appreciate Barnum’s effort
to aspire to make something of
himself.
