1. The Glenn Building: Atlanta, Georgia
This 1923 building named after John Thomas Glenn, who served as Atlanta’s Mayor from 1889 to
1891. The ten story historic structure was scheduled to be demolished as part of the Public
Improvements surrounding the construction of the Atlanta Arena, due to the need for parking.
However, we the Atlanta Arena Constructors (ACC) made this building our “Construction Office” due
to its close proximity to the Arena site. We demolished the entire city block around the building for
the construction of the new parking decks and arranged the phasing to have this building demolition
done last.
During the construction of the Arena, the value of this building was recognized and plans were made to
improve on it. At which time, ACC was tasked with a large number of historic and seismic upgrades
that needed to be made, including a historic and structural reconstruction of the windows, sandstone
façade, cornices, storefronts, and elevator as well as upgrades to the building structure and foundation.
The main structural improvements consisted of under pinning and reinforcing the brick masonry and
concrete foundation using both pin piles as well as injection grout, installing new foundations, steel
strapping existing foundations and walls, fiberglass sheet backing of the brick and installing steel brace
frames. I am truly proud of the work ACC did to keep this building a vibrant part of the Atlanta
skyline.
