Ancient Latvian Harvest Festival Tradition Brought to Life
1. Hello! We are Evelīna, Elīna, Dita and Natālija from Daugavpils, Latvia.
In the framework of the project “Voices from the Land” we are going to
prepare a series of reportages about our land. We are getting food for us
from our land, so he first in our series introduces one of the ancient Latvian
traditions.
"The Fair of Miķelis Day"
Every September our school throws a big harvest festival.
The harvest festival is an ancient tradition. All crops had to be harvested by
Miķeļi and the fields had to be prepared for the long winter ahead. The
celebrations were among the happiest of the year as the summer harvest
provided a wonderful feast for all participants.
In short, there were three things that had to be done:
a feast was held in honour of Miķelis (one of the many sons of the Latvian god);
the harvest was finished;
local markets were held throughout the countryside.
Today’s “Miķeldienas Fair” is the continuation of these ancient traditions so be thankful to our land
for good harvest and have fun at the market this year!
Why did we choose this event for our reportage?
Firstly, it is good to be thankful.
Secondly, it is good to recognize the labours of others and the needs of others.
Thirdly, it helps us to be aware of the spirituality of the environment, and our place as human
beings on this beautiful, but fragile earth.
So let us take a closer look at the participants and read Evelīnas interview.
