The document outlines the 8 habits of highly effective people according to Stephen Covey. The habits are: 1) be proactive, 2) begin with the end in mind, 3) put first things first, 4) think win-win, 5) seek first to understand then to be understood, 6) synergize, 7) sharpen the saw, and 8) find your voice and help others find theirs. Developing good character through practicing these habits can help people become more effective in achieving their goals and building strong relationships.
8 habits of highly effective people by Stephen R. CoveyHaseebEjaz
Our character is a composite of our habits. Changing habits is hard, but can be done by tremendous commitment.
A (good) habit can be defined as the intersection of knowledge, skill and desire. Change is a cycle of being and seeing (visualization).
Our objective is to move progressively on a maturity continuum from dependence to independence to interdependence. Although independence is the current paradigm of our society, we can accomplish much more by cooperation and specialization. However, we must achieve independence before we can choose interdependence.
Habits 1, 2 and 3 (Be Proactive, Begin with The End in Mind, Put First Things First) deal with self mastery. They are the "private victories" required for character growth. Private victories precede public victories.
Habits 4, 5 and 6 are the more personality-oriented "public victories" of Teamwork, Cooperation and Communication.
Habit 7 is the habit of Renewal, creating an upward spiral of growth.
Effectiveness lies in balancing our Production (P) with building Production Capacity (PC).
Organizationally, the PC principle is to always treat your employees as you want them to treat your best customers. We must understand that the best contributions of our employees - their hearts and minds - are as volunteers, because they want to.
This process of growth will be evolutionary, but the net effect will be revolutionary.

Design Thinking: The one thing that will transform the way you thinkDigital Surgeons
What's the one thing that will transform the way you think? Design Thinking. The startups, trailblazers, and business mavericks of our world have embraced this process as a means of zeroing in on true human-centered design.
Design Thinking is a methodology for innovators that taps into the two biggest skills needed in today’s modern workplace: critical thinking & problem solving.
Of course, if you ask 100 practitioners to define it, you’ll wind up with 101 definitions.
Pete Sena of Digital Surgeons believes that Design Thinking is a process for solving complex problems through observation and iteration. At its core, he describes it as a vehicle for solving human wants and needs.
Minds are like parachutes; they only function when open. Thomas Dewar was a Scottish whiskey distiller.
Communicating ideas or insights is often the hardest part of the design process. And PowerPoint and Excel spreadsheets are limited in their ability to do this. But the communication tools used in Design Thinking—maps, models, sketches, and stories—help to capture and express the information required to form and socialize meaning in a very straightforward, human way.
The Five things that all definitions of Design Thinking have in common:
1. Isolating and reframing the problem focused on the user.
2. Empathy. A design practitioner from IDEO, the popular design and innovation firm strapped a video camera to his head and it was only then that he recognized why the ceiling is such an important factor when working with hospital patients. As a patient you lay in bed and stare at it all day. It’s these little details and true empathy that can only be realized by putting oneself in the user’s shoes.
3. Approach things with an open mind and be willing to collaborate. Creativity with purpose is a team sport.
4. Curiosity. We have to harness our inner 5-year-old here and really be inquisitive explorers. Instead of seeing what would be or what should be, consider what COULD be.
5 - Commitment. Brainstorming is easy. It’s easy to want to start a business or solve a problem. Seeing it into market and making it successful is not for the faint of heart. We’ve all read about big “wins” (multi-billion dollar acquisitions like Instagram and WhatsApp). What we don’t read about are people like Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers, who work for years before becoming industry sensations.
Pete describes what he refers to as the “Wheel of Innovation” as a process that continuously focuses on framing, making, validating, and improving on your concept. Be it as small as a core feature in your product down to the business model and business idea itself.
Design is about form and function, not art.
What are the business benefits for Design Innovation?
IDEO started an idea revolution when they coined this phrase DESIGN THINKING. Organizations ranging from early-stage startups up to Fortune 50 organizations have capitalized on this iterative appr
I gave a talk on the role of Design Thinking to leaders in the financial industry. The focus was on user centric thinking to innovate financial products and digital services. (all case material is removed)
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but habit.” – Aristotle...Thus our character is a composite of our habits. “Sow a thought, reap an action, sow an action, reap a habit, sow a character, reap a destiny”, the maxim goes.
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Build trust in relationships.
Balance the different roles.
Allot time to attend fairly to the various responsibilities
and relationships.
Think positive and show empathy
Rejuvenate yourself
4. The Eight Habits of highly effective
people.
1. They take initiative. (“Be Proactive”)
2. They focus on goals. (“Begin with the End in Mind”)
3. They set priorities. (“Put First Things First”)
4. They only win when others win. (“Think Win/Win”)
5. They communicate. (“Seek First to Understand, Then to
Be Understood”)
6. They cooperate. (“Synergize”)
7. They reflect on and repair their deficiencies. (“Sharpen
the Saw”)
8. They find their voice and help others find theirs.
5. Character vs Personality
Much of the business success literature of recent
decades has focused on developing a good personality.
Developing a sound character is more important.
Character lays the basic foundation.
Personality can emerge naturally when character is
rooted in and formed by principles.
Forceful display of a personality that is inconsistent with
our character is like wearing a mask. It is deceptive,
manipulative and ultimately destructive.
6. Basic Principles
Certain basic principles and values make people more
effective.
They are fairness, equity, integrity, honesty, human
dignity and worth, excellence, a spirit of service,
patience, perseverance, caring, courage,
encouragement and positive thinking.
The person whose character grows from these classic
principles is a true leader who can inspire and help
others.
Character is habit.
7. Habit 1: “Be Proactive”
Highly effective people take the initiative. They are
proactive.
They do not impose limits on themselves that prevent
them from acting.
They recognize that they have the freedom to
determine the kind of character they will have.
They may not be able to control their circumstances,
but they can decide how to make the best use of
those circumstances.
8. Habit 2: “Begin with the End in Mind”
Effectiveness is not just a matter of reaching a goal
but rather of achieving the right goal.
Imagine ourselves sitting in the back of the room at
our funeral. Imagine what people could honestly say
about us based on the way we are now.
Do we like what we hear? Is that how we want to be
remembered?
If not, we must change it. We must take hold of our
life.
We can begin by drafting a personal mission
statement that outlines our goals and describes the
kind of person we want to be.
9. Habit 3: “Put First Things First”
We should never let our most important priorities fall
victim to the least important.
We spend our time reacting to urgent circumstances and
emergencies, and never invest the necessary effort to
develop the ability to prevent emergencies in the first
place.
We confuse the important with the urgent. The urgent is
easy to see. The important is harder to discern.
We must spend more time on planning, avoiding pitfalls,
developing relationships, cultivating opportunities and
recharging ourselves.
We must focus on “important but not urgent” activities.
10. Habit 4: “Think Win/Win”
Highly effective people strive for win/win transactions.
They try to ensure that all the parties are better off in
the end.
They know that any other kind of transaction is
destructive, because it produces losers and, therefore,
enemies and bad feelings, such as animosity, defeat
and hostility.
A Win-Win mindset can help us multiply our allies.
11. Habit 5: “Seek First to Understand, Then
to Be Understood”
To develop win/win relationships, we must find out
what the other parties want, and what winning means
to them.
We must always try to understand what the other
people want and need before we begin to outline our
own objectives.
We must not object, argue or oppose what we hear.
We must listen carefully, and think about it.
We must try to put ourselves in the other party’s
shoes.
12. Habit 6: “Synergize”
Effective synergy depends on communication.
We often don’t listen, reflect and respond but, instead,
we hear and react reflexively.
Our reactions may be defensive, authoritarian or
passive.
We may oppose or go along — but we do not actively
cooperate.
Cooperation and communication are the two legs of a
synergistic relationship.
13. Habit 7: “Sharpen the Saw”
We must take care of our bodies with a program of
exercise that combines endurance, flexibility and
strength.
We must nourish our souls with prayer, meditation, or
perhaps by reading great literature or listening to great
music.
Mental repair may mean changing bad habits, such as
the habit of watching television.
We must work to develop our heart, our emotional
connections and our engagement with other people.
14. Habit 8 : “Finding your voice and helping
others find theirs.”
“Voice” is the unique personal significance each of us offers,
and can bring to bear at work.
The 8th habit is all about moving from effectiveness to
greatness
Finding our unique voice means fulfilling our innate potential.
Finding our voice, involves the four elements of a whole
person: mind, body, heart and spirit.
Mind = Vision
When the mind is fully developed we gain vision, the ability
to discern the highest potential in people, institutions,
causes and enterprises.
15. Body = Discipline
We need discipline to transform vision into reality. Discipline
comes by combining vision and commitment.
Heart = Passion
When we develop a wise heart we will feel the passionate fire of
conviction, the flame that sustains the discipline needed to
achieve the vision.
Passion flows from finding and using our unique voice to
accomplish great things.
Spirit = Conscience
Developing our mental identity will lead us toward knowing the
right fork in the road, toward an inward moral compass that will
guide us.
