This document discusses the effects of social networking on education. It presents research that found the majority of students start using social media between ages 13-14 and use it several times a day. More females reported being harassed online than males. 3. What is a Social Network?
 Social network is a mean of
communication that is used to
communicate, share interests,
backgrounds, ideas and other
information among individuals.
 According to Dhyfeer (2013), ‘Social
Networking is a virtual web of
interactions, comments, ideas,
conversations and a display of a
person's existence on the global
network of the internet through pictures
and videos.’

4. Effects of Social
networking on education?
ADDICTION
 Lack of motivation and concentration
 According to Derbyshire (2009), ‘Sites
such as Facebook, Twitter and Bebo
are said to shorten attention spans,
encourage instant gratification and
make young people more self-
centered.’
 Not being able finish home works.
 Not being punctual

5.  According to Kelly (2011), People are sometimes
bullied by spreading rumours, posting
embarrassing information and images,
Commenting on someone’s appearance in a way
that can hurt, Threatening and mocking someone
either for fun or to hurt him or her.

to older girls and to teens of
either gender who have a strong
online presence.’

writing
 Students who use social networking
daily get use to the chat language
and tend to use them n academic
writing

 According to Nutt (n.d) ‘English is a
craft, and this craft should be
practiced regularly in order to train
and engrain proper techniques.
Unfortunately, the use of chat rooms
and slang has begun to replace
reading and letter writing as primary
forms of communication, ultimately
harming our language skills.’

Aim
 Guide the students on how to use social network
sites
 Provide better guidelines to the parents on how to
monitor the students
 To provide guidelines to the teachers and parents
on how to help the students understand how SNS
affect the education.

FOR SCHOOLS
 Better monitoring of computer labs
 Blocking Social sites from the server
 Hold workshops and sessions to give information
on online safety and responsible use of internet
and social sites

15. FOR TEACHERS
 Utilize activities that can create awareness on SNS;
 Hold role plays, debates and discussions based on
disadvantages of SNS on education and health
FOR PARENTS
 Prepare a schedule which gives limited time for the
students to use internet
 Monitor the internet use
 Check what they are posting on SNS and have
limitations and rules for it

16. STUDENTS
 Avoid providing their
personal information and
pictures on public.
 Avoid accepting friend
requests from strangers.

share with a trusted
person

17. IMPLEMENTATION
 Introduce the workshop with lectures from
people active in Information Technology
 Both parents and teachers will take part in
the workshop with the students
 Include some presentations on real life
incidents that happened due to excessive
use of social networking sites, cyber
bullying and harassment.
 Include activities such as surveys
 lectures based on how to use the social
networks in a beneficial way

18.  Sessions with in the workshop on how to
protect themselves from cyber bullying and
harassment
 Sessions on how to help the victims of cyber
bullying
 The participators can also be asked to
prepare a role play based on incidents
regarding social networks
 Hold debates among participators

19. CONCLUSION
 Social networking can be adventurous and
in some cases very helpful to the students.
However, if they are not aware of the things
that can happen because of their
carelessness, these helpful sites might turn
out to be disastrous to their education.
Therefore, it is very important to
understand how these social networks will
affect their studies and self-monitor how
social sites are being used
