The bark of Alstoniaboonei stem was analysed for the medicinal and the effect of extracts on induced
renal insufficiency. The plant material was collected in August-September 2012 and Rats 100-150g body
weights were subjected to the study. Normal saline as control, Cisplatin, and cisplatin plus Alstoneiboonei
stem bark extract were administered and the result summary for serum creatinine in cisplatin treated Rats
(2.69±0.32mg/dl) and in Rats administrates cisplastin plus Alstoniaboonei stem bark extract
(2.5±0.01mg/dl) were elevated compared to saline control (1.89±0.89mg/dl). Serum urea in cisplatin treated
Rats was (38.4 ±2.98mg/dl) compared to Rats administrates with cisplatin plus the extract (38.4±2.98mg/dl)
and saline control (24.94±3.76mg/dl). The study indicates Alstoniaboonei stem bark extract reduced the
renal insufficiency in rats.

Wild hops (Flemingia strobilifera Linn.) is a shrub belonging to Fabaceae family. The leaves of F. strobilifera are commonly used by the Subanen, the indigenous group in Lapuyan, Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines to treat inflammation. In this study, the hydromethanolic (80%) and aqueous leaf extracts of F. strobilifera were evaluated for their antioxidant activity and total phenolics content. The active semi-volatile components of 80% methanol leaf extract were analyzed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). DPPH radical scavenging activity was used to determine the potential of this plant as anti-oxidant. Total phenolics content was determined using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and calculated as gallic acid equivalence. GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of eight compounds. Both the 80% methanol and aqueous extracts of F. strobilifera showed significant scavenging activity with low IC50 values of 0.299 mg/mL and <0.25 mg/mL, respectively. There was positive correlation between the scavenging activity percentage and the total phenolics content only in the aqueous extract of F. strobilifera while 80% methanol extract showed negative correlation between inhibition percentage and total phenolics content which can be attributed to the solvent used and method used in quantification of phenolics. Nevertheless, the results suggest that these leaf extracts are potent source of antioxidant compounds and may serve as natural anti-inflammatory agents.
Bio-active phytoconstituents from non-polar extracts of Diospyros lotus stems...Jing Zang
The objective of this study is to isolate phytoconstituents from Diospyros lotus stems extracts and to evaluate antifungal, lectin and trypsin inhibitory activities of the extracts. The stems were extracted with petroleum ether, diethyl ether and chloroform, respectively, three compounds were isolated and identified as β-sitosterol, stigmasterol and protocatechic acid from both petroleum ether and ether extracts. Chloroform extract was subjected to silica gel column chromatography using CHCl3 as eluent and an increasing amount of EtOAc and MeOH gradually resulted in the isolation and identification of kaempferol 8-O-methylether, apigenin, kaempferol, kaempferol 3-O-α-rhamnoside and luteolin 7-O-β-glucoside. The petroleum ether, diethyl ether and chloroform extracts of Diospyros lotus were tested at the concentration of 0.1 mg/ml for their effect against the fungus Mycosphaerella arachidicola and for their lectin and trypsin inhibitory activities. The results showed that the extracts exhibited significant antifungal activity but had no hemagglutinating and trypsin inhibitory activities.

extract was prepared using Soxhlet`s extraction method and concentrated at 35oC in hot air oven. GCMS
analyzes phytochemicals in plant by demonstrating the structures of the chemical compounds in it. The gas
chromatogram showed the presence of eight phytochemicals. The molecular mass of the phytochemicals were
established based on the molecular ion in the mass spectra. Identification of the phytochemicals was based on
comparison with National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) database. The identified
phytochemicals with their peak area percentages are 11,14-octadecadienoic acid (1.72%), Hexadecanoic acid
also known as Palmitic acid (19.86%), 9,11-octadecadienoic acid (1.33%), 9,12,15-Octadecatrien-1-ol (2.92%),
9-Octadecenoic acid (56.40%), Ethyl palmitate (9.42%), 17-carboxyheptadec-9-en-1-ylium (1.70%) and
Glutaric acid, isobutyl 2-nitrophenyl ester (6.65%). These identified compounds exhibited the following
bioactivities; inhibition of uric acid, urine acidifiers, amino acid decarboxylase activity, arachidonic acid
inhibitor, oligosaccharide provider, decrease endothelial leukocyte and platelet adhesion . Gouania longipetala
therefore contain active phytochemicals that may be beneficial in pharmacognosy. We recommend further work
to be done on its isolation and synthesis.

Comparative Assessment of Total Polyphenols and Antioxidant Activity of Comme...AnuragSingh1049
Green Tea, made from Camellia sinensis plant leaves, is one of the most popular drinks in the world. For the past decades, scientists have studied this plant in terms of potential health benefits. Research has shown that green tea helps prevent stroke, malignancy and infections. In this paper, antioxidant activity and total phenol content of 4 samples of green tea from local Tuzla stores were investigated, of which two were of foreign origin. The antioxidant activity of the samples was analyzed using FRAP and DPPH methods. The obtained results show that the highest content of total phenols and the largest antioxidant capacity has a sample of foreign origin. The content of total phenols in the samples ranges from 60.01 to 79.34 mg GAE/g. The highest FRAP value is 3.34 mmol/g. The antioxidant capacity was also confirmed by the DPPH method. The IC50 value ranges from 0.014 to 0.030 mg/mL.
Renal Toxicity Studies of Albino Rats Exposed to Common Emulsion Paint SolutionPremier Publishers
Emulsion paint solutions (EPS) are constantly used to decorate and protect different materials in the environment. The occupational exposure of professional painters and paint factory workers to EPS may predispose them to systemic toxicity. This work investigated the effects of EPS exposure on renal function indices in albino rats to assess potential renal toxicity. Twenty male albino rats weighing between 120-140g were collected and divided into four groups. Two groups were exposed to periodic intraperitoneal administration of 2.5mg/kg body weight (bw) of the EPS for 14days while the other two groups received the same dose of distilled water and served as control. The rats were sacrificed after 7and14days respectively, and their blood collected and analyzed for heavy metals, urea, creatinine and electrolytes, using standard methods. The rat kidneys were also excised, weighed and analyzed for total protein and histopathology. Results showed that bw, kidney weight, serum creatinine, urea and electrolytes decreased significantly(p<0.05) in the exposed groups compared to control. However, urea and Na+ increased significantly(p<0.05) after the initial 7days exposure. Kidney total protein increased by 20.83% and Pb, Ni, and Cd were detected in the exposed rats. Results of kidney histopathology showed intact renal tubules and glomeruli. These results suggest that exposure of albino rats to EPS caused significant alterations in the steady-state levels of renal function biomarkers. Therefore, prolonged exposure may exert deleterious effects on renal function.

Polyphenol Oxidase (E C 1.10.3.1) from Phyllanthusemblica(Indian Gooseberry) was purified to
homogeneity by ammonium sulphate followed by dialysis and SDS PAGE. The apparent molecular weight was
100 kD. Highly active PPO extract was obtained using 1% (W/V). Triton-X-100 and 0.1M NaCl in 0.2M
phosphate buffer, pH 7.0. The optimum pH was found to be 7 and enzyme activity was stable in range of 300C
- 400C. PPO showed highest activity with Catechol compared to Tyrosine. High inhibitory effects were shown
by EDTA. PPO activity was enhanced by sulphates compared to chlorides. The data obtained in this study help
to better understand fruit browning in Indian Gooseberry

Recovery of acetyl cholinesterase inhibition by Methanolic Bark Extract of Ac...Innspub Net
Organophosphates (OPs) pesticides are reported to cause acute poisoning because of their ability to inhibit acetyl cholinesterase enzyme (AChE). Available antidotes drugs are atropine sulfur, Pralidoxime (2-pyridine aldoxime methyl chloride) and diazepam, which act to recover OP-AChE inhibition. These are controlled drugs not easily accessed and very expensive. In this present study Acacia nilotica was assessed for its antioxidant activity, and in vivo AChE depression and recovery from OP-AChE inhibition. The mice were exposed in three different OPs including chlorpyrifos 480g/l (CPF), Fenitrothion 10g/l (FNT) and Profenophos 720g/l (PFP). The methanolic bark extract of A. nilotica had a substantial increase of absorbance readings from 2.895±0.0032 to 3.716±0.0259 compared to standard (ascorbic acid) from 0.108±0.0033 to 1.468±0.0297 at P<0.05. AChE depression and recovery were assessed by using the AChE test mate kit to analyze blood collected from the mice’s tail. Recovery effect under crude methanolic extract from A. nilotica, ascorbic acid and normal feeding were compared with the untreated group. Results have shown that there is a significant decrease of AChE level from Day zero to 14th day in all treated groups of CPF, PFP and FNT which indicate poisoning. Significance of AChE recovery observed only in male mice in all treatment groups. This is a first study to assess and report the antioxidant activity of stem bark methanolic extracts of A. nilotica in controlling organophosphate pesticide toxicity in mice, hence further studies on isolation of active compounds are recommended.

The present study is the comparative GC-MS analysis of an edible plant Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb and Alternanthera bettzickiana (Regel) G. Nicholson. The shade dried aerial parts of plant powder A. philoxeroides and A. bettzickiana were extracted with ethanol. The GC-MS analysis shows different peaks with low and high molecular weight determining the presence of many bioactive compounds. The phytoconstituents in the ethanolic extract of Alternanthera philoxeroides and Alternanthera bettzickiana have been screened by using GC-MS analysis. A. bettzickiana ethanol extracts showed higher phytoconstituents when compared to the ethanol extracts of A.philoxeroides. This study helps to explore the potential compounds and the presence of these compounds may proceed to find out various therapeutic activities.

Many number of the plant species including Cocculus hirsutus L. is being used as the sources of herbal
medicine. Present work was mainly focused with the identification of the therapeutic properties of
C. hirsutus L. leaf extracts. The leaf extracts of methanol, aqueous, chloroform, and benzene showed
solvent dependent qualitative and quantitative phytochemical presence as well as antimicrobial activity.
Whereas the leaf extracts of methanol and chloroform showed significantly high antimicrobial activity
than water and benzene extracts. Further methanol leaf extract of C. hirsutus performed to liquid
chromato y-mass spectroscopy (LC-MS) for identification of active antimicrobial compound structure.
LC-MS studies give 26 structural compounds. Docking (annotating) studies revealed that among 26
compounds the Compound-5 (Hexadecanoic acid - (1R, 2R, 3S, 4R, 6S)-4, 6-diamino-2, 3-dihydroxy
cyclohexyl 2,6-diamino-2,6-dideoxy-α-D-glucopyranoside) showed highest docking fitness score with
the bacterial membrane protein sortase-A. Our data suggest that methanol extract of C. hirsutus leaf
possess medicinally significant antimicrobial compounds and thus justify the use of this leaf as folklore
medicine for preventing human microbial related diseases.

selected as natural anticancer drugs. The objective of the study was to analyze the anticancer property of turmeric
(Curcuma longa), neem (Azadirachta indica), tulasi (Occimum sanctum) and ginger (Zingiber officinale) on HeLa cells.
Turmeric, neem, tulasi and ginger capsules (Himalaya’s Company) were used and aqueous and methanolic extracts of the
turmeric, neem, tulasi and ginger were obtained using a soxhlet extraction. To check the efficacy of these drug MTT assay
was performed, that determines % viability and/or cytotoxicity. IC50 of aqueous turmeric, neem, tulasi and ginger extracts
in case of HeLa cells were 17.8, 22, 79.4, 27.86 respectively and in case of methanolic turmeric, neem, tulasi and ginger
extracts 17, 7.35, 75.24 and 16.1 respectively. To confirm apoptosis as the sole reason behind cell death
immunofluorescence based apoptosis assay was performed using TALI image based cytometer. The study has led to
postulate hypothesis that natural drugs e.g. turmeric, neem, tulasi and ginger are potent anti-cancer compound that are

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common and serious health problem affecting many people each year around the world especially females. Therapy of UTI relies on the predictability of the agents causing UTI and knowledge of their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns. A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in two major hospitals of Western Nepal. Tools for data collection were a data collection form. A total of 400 patient’s file with suspected UTI were reviewed, out of which 173 (43.3%) of the suspected samples showed the presence of potential pathogens causing UTI. UTI was most prevalent in females of age group of 21–30 years. Escherichia coli was the predominant (65.1%) bacterial pathogen. Amikacin was found to be the most sensitive antimicrobial followed by nitrofurantoin and gentamicin. Ampicillin showed a higher percentage of resistant, compared to other antimicrobials. As drug resistance among bacterial pathogens is an evolving process, regular surveillance and monitoring are necessary to provide effective treatment of UTIs.

disease, chronic renal failure and diabetic retinopathy.Diabetic retinopathy is one of the major complication
of diabetes that affects the blood vessels by causing damage to the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye
i.e., retina. At first, diabetic retinopathy may cause no symptoms or only mild vision problems. Eventually,
diabetic retinopathy can result in blindness. The diabetic retinopathy can be broadly characterized into three
stages: early non-proliferative, pre-proliferative and finally proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The chance of
getting diabetic retinopathy is when the person has diabetes for a long time and it is poorly controlled. Other
complications that may develop mainly include: cataracts, glaucoma, macular edema and retinal detachment.
Surgeries are the main treatment for diabetic retinopathy. If it is neglected it may lead to complete blindness.
Diabetic retinopathy can be prevented by monitoring blood glucose level periodically. The person with
diabetes need to check and record their blood glucose level and make sure that the blood glucose level
remains within the target range. Prevention is better than cure, it is better to prevent it than going for
treatment once after facing the problem. So, the awareness of diabetic retinopathy is needed.

Organophosphates (OPs) pesticides are reported to cause acute poisoning because of their ability to inhibit acetyl cholinesterase enzyme (AChE). Available antidotes drugs are atropine sulfur, Pralidoxime (2-pyridine aldoxime methyl chloride) and diazepam, which act to recover OP-AChE inhibition. These are controlled drugs not easily accessed and very expensive. In this present study Acacia nilotica was assessed for its antioxidant activity, and in vivo AChE depression and recovery from OP-AChE inhibition. The mice were exposed in three different OPs including chlorpyrifos 480g/l (CPF), Fenitrothion 10g/l (FNT) and Profenophos 720g/l (PFP). The methanolic bark extract of A. nilotica had a substantial increase of absorbance readings from 2.895±0.0032 to 3.716±0.0259 compared to standard (ascorbic acid) from 0.108±0.0033 to 1.468±0.0297 at P<0.05. AChE depression and recovery were assessed by using the AChE test mate kit to analyze blood collected from the mice’s tail. Recovery effect under crude methanolic extract from A. nilotica, ascorbic acid and normal feeding were compared with the untreated group. Results have shown that there is a significant decrease of AChE level from Day zero to 14th day in all treated groups of CPF, PFP and FNT which indicate poisoning. Significance of AChE recovery observed only in male mice in all treatment groups. This is a first study to assess and report the antioxidant activity of stem bark methanolic extracts of A. nilotica in controlling organophosphate pesticide toxicity in mice, hence further studies on isolation of active compounds are recommended.

GC-MS Analysis of Ethanolic Extract of Alternanthera Philoxeroides and Altern...Premier Publishers
The present study is the comparative GC-MS analysis of an edible plant Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb and Alternanthera bettzickiana (Regel) G. Nicholson. The shade dried aerial parts of plant powder A. philoxeroides and A. bettzickiana were extracted with ethanol. The GC-MS analysis shows different peaks with low and high molecular weight determining the presence of many bioactive compounds. The phytoconstituents in the ethanolic extract of Alternanthera philoxeroides and Alternanthera bettzickiana have been screened by using GC-MS analysis. A. bettzickiana ethanol extracts showed higher phytoconstituents when compared to the ethanol extracts of A.philoxeroides. This study helps to explore the potential compounds and the presence of these compounds may proceed to find out various therapeutic activities.
Structural Characterization and Antimicrobial Activity of Cocculus hirsutus L...BRNSS Publication Hub
Many number of the plant species including Cocculus hirsutus L. is being used as the sources of herbal
medicine. Present work was mainly focused with the identification of the therapeutic properties of
C. hirsutus L. leaf extracts. The leaf extracts of methanol, aqueous, chloroform, and benzene showed
solvent dependent qualitative and quantitative phytochemical presence as well as antimicrobial activity.
Whereas the leaf extracts of methanol and chloroform showed significantly high antimicrobial activity
than water and benzene extracts. Further methanol leaf extract of C. hirsutus performed to liquid
chromato y-mass spectroscopy (LC-MS) for identification of active antimicrobial compound structure.
LC-MS studies give 26 structural compounds. Docking (annotating) studies revealed that among 26
compounds the Compound-5 (Hexadecanoic acid - (1R, 2R, 3S, 4R, 6S)-4, 6-diamino-2, 3-dihydroxy
cyclohexyl 2,6-diamino-2,6-dideoxy-α-D-glucopyranoside) showed highest docking fitness score with
the bacterial membrane protein sortase-A. Our data suggest that methanol extract of C. hirsutus leaf
possess medicinally significant antimicrobial compounds and thus justify the use of this leaf as folklore
medicine for preventing human microbial related diseases.

132,000 new cases and mortality rate of 74,000 deaths annually. In this study turmeric, neem, tulasi and ginger were
selected as natural anticancer drugs. The objective of the study was to analyze the anticancer property of turmeric
(Curcuma longa), neem (Azadirachta indica), tulasi (Occimum sanctum) and ginger (Zingiber officinale) on HeLa cells.
Turmeric, neem, tulasi and ginger capsules (Himalaya’s Company) were used and aqueous and methanolic extracts of the
turmeric, neem, tulasi and ginger were obtained using a soxhlet extraction. To check the efficacy of these drug MTT assay
was performed, that determines % viability and/or cytotoxicity. IC50 of aqueous turmeric, neem, tulasi and ginger extracts
in case of HeLa cells were 17.8, 22, 79.4, 27.86 respectively and in case of methanolic turmeric, neem, tulasi and ginger
extracts 17, 7.35, 75.24 and 16.1 respectively. To confirm apoptosis as the sole reason behind cell death
immunofluorescence based apoptosis assay was performed using TALI image based cytometer. The study has led to
postulate hypothesis that natural drugs e.g. turmeric, neem, tulasi and ginger are potent anti-cancer compound that are

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common and serious health problem affecting many people each year around the world especially females. Therapy of UTI relies on the predictability of the agents causing UTI and knowledge of their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns. A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in two major hospitals of Western Nepal. Tools for data collection were a data collection form. A total of 400 patient’s file with suspected UTI were reviewed, out of which 173 (43.3%) of the suspected samples showed the presence of potential pathogens causing UTI. UTI was most prevalent in females of age group of 21–30 years. Escherichia coli was the predominant (65.1%) bacterial pathogen. Amikacin was found to be the most sensitive antimicrobial followed by nitrofurantoin and gentamicin. Ampicillin showed a higher percentage of resistant, compared to other antimicrobials. As drug resistance among bacterial pathogens is an evolving process, regular surveillance and monitoring are necessary to provide effective treatment of UTIs.

disease, chronic renal failure and diabetic retinopathy.Diabetic retinopathy is one of the major complication
of diabetes that affects the blood vessels by causing damage to the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye
i.e., retina. At first, diabetic retinopathy may cause no symptoms or only mild vision problems. Eventually,
diabetic retinopathy can result in blindness. The diabetic retinopathy can be broadly characterized into three
stages: early non-proliferative, pre-proliferative and finally proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The chance of
getting diabetic retinopathy is when the person has diabetes for a long time and it is poorly controlled. Other
complications that may develop mainly include: cataracts, glaucoma, macular edema and retinal detachment.
Surgeries are the main treatment for diabetic retinopathy. If it is neglected it may lead to complete blindness.
Diabetic retinopathy can be prevented by monitoring blood glucose level periodically. The person with
diabetes need to check and record their blood glucose level and make sure that the blood glucose level
remains within the target range. Prevention is better than cure, it is better to prevent it than going for
treatment once after facing the problem. So, the awareness of diabetic retinopathy is needed.

The type, morphology, and distribution of Calcium oxalate and Calcium carbonate crystals in mature
leaves of five species of five families were studied. All the studied species contain calcium carbonate crystals.
Species with both calcium oxalate and calcium carbonate. The calcium oxalate crystals were mainly found as
druses or prismatic crystals. Druses were located in the crystal cells of both mesophyll and bundle sheath, but
prismatic crystals were found only in cells of the bundle sheath. All calcium carbonate cystolyths were located
in the epidermal lithocysts, and the types of lithocysts were related to the number of epidermal layers.

ANTIMICROBIAL PROPERTY OF AQUEOUS AND PETROLEUM ETHER LEAF EXTRACTS OF JATRO...IJSIT Editor
The experiment was carried out to investigate the antimicrobial property of aqueous and Petroleum
ether leaf extracts of Jatrophacurcas against some gram positive micro-organisms: Staphylococcus aureus,
Bacillus subtilis and some gram negative micro-organisms: Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi using
antibiotics; Gentamycin as control. The phytochemical screening of aqueous and petroleum ether extracts
showed the presences of cardiac glycosides, steroids and terpenes, tannins, phlobatannins, anthraguinones
and saponins. The disc diffusion techniques was used to test the sensitivity of the micro-organism to the
extracts of Jatrophacurcas the results obtained show mean zones of inhibition between (19 + 0.6mm) to (30 +
0.3mm) for aqueous extract and (24 + 0.5mm) to (35 + 0.8mm) for petroleum ether extract. Micro-organisms
showed sensitivity in the following order: E.coli;(17 + 0.3mm) and (25 + 0.8mm), S.aureus; (26 + 0.2mm) and
(28 + 0.6mm), B.subtilis; (16 + 0.1mm) and (20 + 0.7mm), and S.typhi (25 + 0.2mm) and (27 + 0.6mm) for
aqueous and petroleum ether extracts respectively. The minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) for both
extracts show that the extracts inhibited the growth of the entire test organism at concentration 0.6mg/ml.
This result thus suggests the potency of Jatrophacurcas as an antimicrobial agent especially at the
concentration employed.

Phytochemical and Biological Evaluation of Cichorium intybus L. Seedsiosrjce
In this study, we aim to demonstrate, separately, the hepatoprotective activity of the total ethanolic
extract as well as the defatted ethanolic extract of Cichorium intybus L., using adult Wister albino rats
(120-170 g) as the experimental animals. The total as well as the defatted alcoholic extracts of Cichorium
intybus L., seeds possess significant hepatoprotective activity; which may be attributed to the individual or
combined effects of the phytoconstituents of each extract separately. In this study, hepatic injury caused by
carbon tetra chloride, was analyzed through estimation of AST (GOT), ALT (GPT), albumin and platelets in
blood samples taken from the veins of orbital plexus of each animal as well as the histopathological
examination of the liver. The effects of the extracts were comparable with standard drug Silymarin. On the other
hand a GC-MS analysis was performed on the fatty acid composition of the lipoidal fraction for the seeds. The
separated fatty acids were converted to their methyl ester and then subjected to the analysis.
Liver Histological Response of Hyperlipidemic Male Rat (Rattus norvegicus) to...AI Publications
The leaf of lakum (Cayratia trifolia (L.) Domin.) contains compounds that are expectedly antihyperlipidemic. This study aims to determine the liver histological response to the lakum leaf extract and its effect on the levels of SGOT and SGPT in hyperlipidemic male rats (Rattus norvegicus). The male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 4 treatment groups. P0 was a group of rats that were given standard feed, P1 was a group that were fed with high fat diet, P2 was a group that were fed high fat diet and lakum leaf extract with a dose of 40mg/200g BW (body weight)/day, and P3 was a group were fed high fat diet and simvastatin at a dose of 0.18mg/200g BW/day. High fat diet was given for 30 days, whilst treatments were implemented for 28 days. The histological descriptions showed that the hepatocyte cell repair occurred in the treatment group that was given lakum leaf extract but there were no significant differences in liver weight as well as SGOT and SGPT levels. Lakum leaf extract can be used as an antihyperlipidemic agent whilst maintaining the histology of hepatocytes and would not interfere with the liver function of the hyperlipidemic male rats.
The word “banana” is a general term comprising a number of species or hybrids in the genus Musa of family Musaceae. Many studies reported that banana is a good source of phenolic compounds, which are having potential health benefits in human beings. The phytochemical composition of eight banana varieties was investigated. Quantitative estimation of phytochemicals revealed that highest alkaloid and tannin content was noticed in variety Nendran (3.76% and 4.40 mg/100g respectively). Whereas, variety Rasakadali exhibited highest flavonoid content (9.49 mg/100). Total phenol and saponin content was found higher in variety Kadali (0.82% and 11.6 mg/100g respectively).

This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of ethanolic leaf extract of Sida acuta on the micro-anatomy of the liver and some biochemical parameters in adult Wistar rats. Thirty rats weighing between 140-180g were assigned to three groups (A, B and C) with ten animals each. Group A served as the control while groups B and C served as the experimental groups and received 100mg/kgbw and 200mg/kgbw of the extract respectively for fourteen days. All the animals were sacrificed after fourteen days. Blood was collected by cardiac puncture for biochemical analysis of serum liver enzymes s The liver was removed, preserved and processed for paraffin sections and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining. The animals in the control group showed normal histological and biochemical parameters. Conversely, animals that received 100mg/kgbw of the extract showed slight difference in their hepatic cyto-architecture while animals that were administered with 200mg/kgbw of the extract revealed distorted morphological feature showing shrunken sinusoid and dilation of the central vein suggesting that the extract has adverse effect on the morphology of the liver. Results of the serum liver enzymes of animals treated with 100mg/kgbw and 200mg/kg revealed significantly decreased values of AST, ALP and ALT (P <0.05) relative to the control. From the result of this experiment, it is concluded that administration of ethanolic extract of Sida acuta leaves may be toxic to Wistar rats at the doses administered.

The present study was undertaken to investigate the protective effect and possible mechanism of
alcoholic (AlE) and aqueous extract (AqE) from Commelina benghalensis root (CB) on EtOH-induced hepatic
injury in Wistar rat. Hepatotoxic parameters studied in vivo include serum transaminases (AST, and ALT),
ALP, bilirubin, protein, lipid profile (Cholesterol, triglyceride, VLDL and HDL) and level of antioxidants
together with histopathological examination. Liv 52® was used as a reference hepatoprotective agent
(5ml/kg-1b.w.). AlE and AqE (200 mg/kg-1b.w.) on oral administration decreased the level of AST, ALP, ALT,
bilirubin, cholesterol, triglyceride, VLDL, MDA and increased the level of protein, HDL and antioxidants (SOD,
GSH and CAT) in rats being treated with ethanol (EtOH). Pentobarbitone -induced sleeping time study was
carried out to verify the effect on microsomal enzymes Histopathological observations confirmed the
beneficial roles of MF against EtOH-induced liver injury in rats. Possible mechanism may involve their

alternative methods for plant protection, which are less dependent on chemicals and are more
environmentally friendly. Microbial antagonists are widely used for the biocontrol of fungal plant diseases.
Many species of actinomycates, particulary those belonging to the genus sterptomyces, are well known as
antifungal biocontrol agents that inhibit several plant pathogenic fungi.
Another way biological control has been developed as an alternative of chemicals to tock with plant
pathogenic fungi. Considering high presence of chitin in fungal cell wall, chitinase enzyme is camped as an
effective biocontrol agent against phytopathogenic fungi. Streptomyces bacteria are able to produce various chitinase enzymes, chitinases produced by streptomyces belong to the families 18 and 19 glycosyl hydrolases.
The antifungal activity is mostly shown by fomily 19 Chitinases. In comparison with bacterial family 18
chitinases, the specific hydrolyzing activity of chitinase 19 against soluble and in soluble chitinous substrates
has been markedly higher. Considering the importance of family to investigate antifungal potential of
streptomyces bacteria isolated from east Azarbijan region soils based on molecular identification of family 19
chitinase. encoding gene in these bacteria.
To aim the purpose 110 soil samples were collected from East Azarbaijan and 310 strepomyces
isolates were selected using macroscopic and microscopic observations. DNA genomic of all of the isolates
were extracted and PCR reactions was done using chitinase 19 designed primers as marker.
Totally isolates were selected with molecular selection and antagonistic test were done. One of the isolates
exhibit the most strong antifungal activity.
The strain was identified using 16srDNA gene, and the chitinase encoding gene were amplified partially to
prove the PCR selection. Finally the bacterium were introduced as potentially biological fertilizer.

helping bacteria(Pseudomonas spp.) and two rhizobium levels, four replicates were employed. Jamaran418
green bean was utilized as host plant. At the end, nodulation, growth and plant’s nitrogen indexes were
measured. The results showed that all above mentioned helping bacteria enhance the growth and nodulation
performance of green bean. It should be said that P.putida had the highest effect on the green bean
nodulation increase along with rhizobium (130%) followed by P.fluorescens Tabriz, P. fluorescens Chao and
P.fluorescens B119, ( 83, 63 and 17%, respectively). Also, we observed 45, 33, 22 and 8% performance
increase under the effect of P.putida, P. fluorescens Chao, P. fluorescens Tabriz and P. fluorescens B119,
respectively.

The present study provides evidence that 1,5-Bis (3,5-Dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)-3-oxapentane-diacetatocopper has an antidiabetic effect, as hypoglycemic agent and as antilipolytic agent, but with many abnormalities. It affected blood and liver biochemistry in rats. Sera of animals treated with 1,5-Bis(3,5-Dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)-3-oxapentane-diacetatocopper in the present study revealed a significant decrease in serum glucose and albumin, while reported a significant increase in ALT and AST. Moreover, significant decrease in body weight.
The study was carried out to investigate the effect of the aqueous extracts of
Myristicafragrans(Nutmeg), Murrayakoenigi(curry leaf) and Aframomummelegueta(Guinea pepper) on Some
Biochemical and haematologicalParameters. Sixteen (16) wister strain rats weighing between 130 – 180g
were divided into four (4) groups of four (4) rats each and for 21 days fed the following diets: Group A –
normal diet + myristicafragrans (Nutmeg) aqueous extract, Group B – normal diet + murrayakoenigi (curry
leaf) aqueous extract, Group C – normal diet + aframomummelegueta (Guinea pepper) aqueous extract, Group
D – normal diet (control). After a period of 21 days the rats were sacrificed and the serum was taken for the
following estimations: total protein, albumin, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, aspartate transaminase, alanine
transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and
glucose. The whole blood was taken for packed cell volume and white blood cell count. The results indicated
that oral administration of myristicafragrans, murrayakoenigi and aframomummelegueta to rat’s exhibit
remarkable hypolipidaemic activity and lowering glucose concentration. The oral administration of these
three spices exhibit protein increasing activities compared with the control rats. The packed cell volume and
white cell values of all the rats decreased after feeding with experimental diet (aqueous extract) compare
with the control rats. It is clear from this study thatMyristicafragrans(Nutmeg), Murrayakoenigi(curry leaf)
andAframomummelegueta (Guinea pepper) contain significant amounts of phytochemicals and exhibit
hypolipidaemic activity when consumed.
THE INFLUENCE OF SILICONE ANTIFOAM FROM LEATHER AND DYING WASTE WATER EFFLUE...IJSIT Editor
This study investigates the influence of silicone antifoam agent on waste water from Gashash leather
and Nigerian Spinning and Dying industries (NSD). Waste water from the outlet of the industries were
collected and analyzed for physicochemical parameters. Silicone antifoam was added to the wastewater to
determine the impact of the silicone antifoam on turbidity and chemical oxygen demand (COD)
concentrations. The result shows that both turbidity and COD values significantly increased even when small
concentration of the silicone antifoam was added. Further, independent t-test was used to identify the
variance between the mean value of the wastewater from leather, spinning and dying industries, the results
indicated that there are no significant differences (observed t 0.544, critical t 2.015, and p value 0.589)
between the waste water in leather and dying industries.
WATER INTAKE CHARACTERISTICS OF DIFFERENT SOIL TYPES IN SOUTHERN BORNO NIGERIA IJSIT Editor
The water intake characteristics of soils under arable crop practice were studied with a view to
obtaining useful information for the design of irrigation and drainage system and for effective soil
management techniques. Parameters determined; infiltration, hydraulic conductivity, permeability, bulk
density, particle density, porosity and moisture content. The textural class of the soils from the three sites
was found to be clay. The result obtained indicates that infiltration was high initially but decreases later. This
may be due to the soil reaching a saturation point. On the average the infiltration rate was observed to
decrease with time. The coefficient of permeability was found to be 9.26 x 10 , 7.66 x 10 and 2.15 x 10 cm/s
for site A, B and C respectively. Information on infiltration and permeability are useful tools in irrigation and
other engineering design.

In avoiding damage to fruit species the permissible falling height and permissible static pressure are
of great importance. The former is important in planning harvesting and handling operations, the latter in
selecting the height of transport containers. Fruits are generally transported in containers. The static and
dynamic forces which then act on the fruit will cause damage if they exceed given value. The static force may
be calculated from the weight of the fruit column being transported while the dynamic load is a consequence
of vibration caused by transport. The permitted static load for a given fruit may be determined
experimentally. In this study, physical properties of interest were determined for fresh pomegranate fruit
then calculations for the design of a suitable height were conducted based on the measured properties using
Ross and Isaacs’s theory. Maximum height for packing and storing of fresh pomegranate fruit in the box was
determined to be less than 123 cm based on a rupture force of 40.7 N.

The present study was carried out to evaluate antioxidant activity of Dimocarpus longan stems
extracts and also to investigate the main phytoconstituents in the bio-active extract. N-hexane,
dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and methanol 80% extract were tested for free radical scavenging activity on
model reaction with stable 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH). The results showed that ethyl
acetate was the most active one as antioxidant agent and phytochemical analysis of that extract revealed the
presence of triterpenes, flavonoids, tannins and carbohydrates. The results may help to discover new
chemical classes of natural antioxidant substances that could serve as selective agents for infectious diseases.
BIOMINERALISED SILICA-NANOPARTICLES DETECTION FROM MARINE DIATOM CULTURE MEDIAIJSIT Editor
Diatoms are unicellular algae the most spectacular among the microorganisms assemble into a
micro-shell with a distinct 3-D shape and pattern of fine nanoscale features. In this investigation, we present
results; Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy images show the presence of ordered arrays of silica
nanoparticles. A number of diatoms with partially opened valves were observed on the surface of the diatom,
which indicates that cell contents inside of diatoms could release the nanoparticles into the culture solution.
We believe that the film forming silica nanoparticles are either released by the diatoms during reproduction
or after cell death due to bacterial action. Further research will investigate whether the silica nanoparticles
are produced intracellular and then released or whether synthesis occurs in cell culture medium. This
approach provides an environmentally friendly means for fabricating silica nanoparticles for drug delivery,
disease diagnostics, artificial opal films, decorative coatings and novel optical materials.

Fish are at present in high demand in food markets, they are widely consumed in many parts of the
world because they posses high protein content, saturated fat and also contain omega fatty acids known to
support good health. The present study deals with biochemical composition of common fish,Sardinella
longiceps. The proximate composition of protein, carbohydrate, lipid, amino acids and fatty acids were
studied. The results of proximate composition in S. longiceps showed the percentage of protein was high in
the normal and tumor infected fish tissue (29.15 &18.93%), followed by the carbohydrate (5.81 & 2.42 %)
and lipid (15.61 & 9.28 %). The percentage compositions of essential and non-essential amino acids are
presented in normal tissue and tumor infected tissue were found to be as 46.09 % & 41.47 % and 37.23% &
40.63%. In the analysis, the fatty acid profile by gas chromatography revealed the presence of higher amount
of PUFA (Linolenic acid 32.74 %) in normal tissue. The details of the vitamins detected in S. longicepstissue.
Among them, vitamin A was found in higher levels (91.16 mg/gm) at normal tissue. In the present study,
totally 5 macro minerals and 2 trace minerals were reported. The S. longiceps normal and infected tissue
contributed maximum sodium (289.6 mg/gm) and Potassium (166.5 mg/gm) of minerals. The result shows
that marine fish (S. longiceps) tissue is a valuable food recipe for human consumption, due to its high quality
protein and well-balanced amino acids fatty acids and vitamins and minerals.
ANTIFUNGAL ACTIVITY OF SELECTED MEDICINAL PLANT EXTRACS AGAINST PLANT PATHOG...IJSIT Editor
The aim of this work was to find an alternative to chemical fungicides currently used in the control
plant pathogenic fungi Rhizoctoniasolani ,ColletotrichummusaeandFusariumoxysporum,. The antifungal
activity of the methanol extracts of six medicinal plants used in native medicine in Sri Lanka is reported.All
plant extracts were screened for their fungistatic, fungicidal activities and minimum inhibitory dilution (MID)
against above fungi. The media amended with methanol and recommended fungicide for respective fungal
strain were consider as negative and positive control respectively.Results showed that radial growth in all the
three tested organisms was significantly impaired (p<0.05) by the addition of the extracts in the culture
medium used. The test fungi differed in their reaction to the different extracts but on the whole, growth
inhibition increased with the concentration of each extract. The most active extracts, shows a marked effect of
the 20% methanol extracts from sweet flag with inhibition values of 91%, 86% and 84 % for F. oxysporum,R.
solani and C.muceawhereas those from wild basil inhibited the growth of the same pathogens by 89%, 84%
and 74%.The results showed minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were 5 % (v/v) for sweet flag and wild
basil and 20% (v/v) for all other plant crude extracts. Out of six plants extract screened, wild basil and sweet
flag showed more than 80% fungal inhibition after 6 hour immersion and other extracts could not exceed
60% inhibition after any exposure time. The study revealed that methanol crude extract of sweet flag and
wild basil exhibit strong fungistatic and fungicidal activities against tested fungi. These results support the
potential use of these plant extracts in the management of diseases caused by tested plant pathogenic fungi.
OUTCOME OF TUNNELED CATHETERS IN HEMODIALYSIS PATIENTS: FIVE YEARS SINGLE CE...IJSIT Editor
Introduction: The tunneled hemodialysis catheters(THCs) are preferred for the patients who are expected to
poor survival and the attempts to arteriovenous fistulas (AVF) are failure. In our study,in hemodialysis
patients who are implemented tunneled catheter it is evaluated the mean duration for the catheters , their
complications and the factors which affect the period of the catheters.
Methods: At the Antalya Research and Education Center Hemodialysis Unit it is retrospectively evaluated the
data of 297 hemodialysis patients who are implemented tunneled catheter during 5 years .
Results: The mean duration time of the tunneled catheters has been 224.9+162.9 days. The duration time of
right internal jugular vein(RIJV) is considerably higher than left internal jugular vein(LIJV) and subclavian
veins (235.8+96.6 days). In diabetic hemodialysis patients, the duration time of the catheter is rather lower
than the other end stage renal disease reasons(184.4±72.1 days).
Conclusions: THCs must be considered as an alternative but not a permanent vascular access in hemodialysis
patients. Because of relatively short duration times than AVF, high infection risks and thrombosis , it must be
used only in patients who have problems with the creating permanent vascular access or patients with
expected low survival time. Moreover, it must be taken into consideration the duration time of the catheter is
low in diabetic hemodialysis patients. According to our results, catheter duration time was longer in RIJV than
in other insertion sites and RIJV must be preferred as first place to placement of THCs.
ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF Citrus limonON Acnevulgaris (PIMPLES) IJSIT Editor
Research was carried out on antibacterial activity of Citrus limon on Acnevulgaris (Pimples). Samples
were obtained from individuals having Pimples, by swabbing their faces, backs and chests. Samples were
collected from Amanawa hospital in sokoto, Nigeria using Swab sticks. The sticks were transported to the
Microbiology Laboratory of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto. Citrus limon juice was used at different
concentrations of (20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%) on Propionibacteriumacnes, the bacteria that cause
Acnevulgaris (Pimples). The Citrus limon juice was found to be effective at all Concentrations used.
Conventional Cleanser was used as positive control, and it was only found to be effective at higher
concentrations of (60%, 80% and 100%) and was not effective at Lower Concentrations (20% and 40%). The
Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of Citrulimon on Propionibacterium acnes was taken and presence
of growth was observed at concentrations of 20%, 40% and 60%, and absence of growth was observed at
80% and 100%. The minimum inhibitory concentration of conventional cleanser indicated the presence of
growth at 20% and 40% and absence of Growth at 60%, 80% and 100%. The Minimum bactericidal
Concentration (MBC) taken on Propionibacteriumacnes using both Citrus limon juice and cleanser all showed
absence of growth at all the concentrations used (20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%). From the research
conducted it was observed that lemon juice have strong anti Acne vulgaris effect morethan the convensional
cleansers used for the treatment of Acne vulgaris.

weight was 512 mg. HPTLC was carried out after organizing appropriate solvent system in which maximum 2

In June 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that the novel influenza A, H1N1 as a
pandemic. After six months, as of December 29, 2009, it was reported by WHO that more than 208 countries
and territories were affected by the pandemic accounting for about 150,000 infected cases and at least 11,516
death. In Malaysia, during the first wave, there are about 14,912 cases were reported from May, 15, 2009
until June, 4, 2010 and a total number of 88 deaths were recorded across the country in 2010. The aim of this
study is to assess the transmissibility of this pandemic in Malaysia by estimating the basic reproduction
number, Ro, which is the average number of secondary cases generated by a single primary case. The value of
Ro is a summary measure of the transmission potential in a given epidemic setting and has been estimated to
range from 1.4 – 1.6 in Mexico, from 2.0 – 2.6 in Japan, 1.96 in New Zealand and 1.68 in China for this current
pandemic.

The leaves of the plant Annonareticulata were collected and extracted using different ranges of polar
organic solvents like low (Ethyl acetate), medium (Butanol) and high (Methanol). Qualitative analysis and
antimicrobial activity was investigated. The phytochemical screening of the leaf extract revealed that the
presence of alkaloids, tannins, steroids, terpenoids and coumarins. The Ethyl acetate and Methanol extracts
showed better antibacterial activity, the significant inhibitory effect against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas
putida and Lactobacillus acidophilus, and thus displayed highest inhibitory zone of 19.5mm, 19mm and 19mm
when compared to Butanol. FT-IR spectroscopic analysis of the Ethyl acetate, Butanol and Methanol extract of
A.reticulata revealed the presence of -CH, -OH, CH-OH and –NH2 bond stretching. The clinical isolates were
collected from patients suffered from different microbial infections. The antibacterial and antifungal activity
was determined by using leaf extracts.

ABSTRACT
The bark of Alstoniaboonei stem was analysed for the medicinal and the effect of extracts on induced
renal insufficiency. The plant material was collected in August-September 2012 and Rats 100-150g body
weights were subjected to the study. Normal saline as control, Cisplatin, and cisplatin plus Alstoneiboonei
stem bark extract were administered and the result summary for serum creatinine in cisplatin treated Rats
(2.69±0.32mg/dl) and in Rats administrates cisplastin plus Alstoniaboonei stem bark extract
(2.5±0.01mg/dl) were elevated compared to saline control (1.89±0.89mg/dl). Serum urea in cisplatin treated
Rats was (38.4 ±2.98mg/dl) compared to Rats administrates with cisplatin plus the extract (38.4±2.98mg/dl)
and saline control (24.94±3.76mg/dl). The study indicates Alstoniaboonei stem bark extract reduced the
renal insufficiency in rats.

INTRODUCTION
Alstoniaboonei belong to member of the medium sized genus. The tree originated from tropical
Asia. The two Nigerian species may be recognized easily by their whorled leaves, the large tree were deeply
fluted bole, yielding copious latex when slashed with branches and distinctive leaves in whorls, looked at
from below the twigs some what resemble a compound leaf with digitate leaflets. It is commonly called in
Yoruba: Awu, Edo: Ukhu, Itsekiri: Okugbo and Igbo
[1].
The plant extends from Senegal to Ethiopia and south
to Zaria, the two Nigerian species habitat were forest and forest outliers in damp situation. Alstoniaboonie
attend a height of 30m to 3m in girth, with whorl branches that are nearly horizontal, the bole often fluted,
but sometime right up to the crown, with slight buttresses. The bark is brown in colour fairly rough flaking off
in small patches slash light brown with white streaks, exuding copious white latex. The leaves 10-20cm long
by 5-7.5cm broad. In whorls of 5-8 oblanceotate to obovate, rounded at the top but with a short blunt tip
tapering gradually to the cuneate base with up to 50pairs of thin straight lateral nerve, stalk stout, up to
18mm long, but often very short flowers in October-March yellowish- white, in umbel- like clusters at the
ends of the branches of the finely hairy terminal inflorescences [1].
Flowers shortly stalked, calyx forming a shallow cup about 2.5mm deep with 5 lobes, corolla-tube to
12mm long, corolla-lobes to 6mm broad and long. Fruits in (Dec-May) hanging down in a pair of follicles up to
60cm long by 6mm thick, finely with a tuft of long silky hairs at each end. Wood very light in weight, white
and soft.[2] reported, the phytochemical analysis, indicate the presences of Alkaloid and Flavonoid. Alkaloids
were mainly indole type (alstonine, alstoniline, cillastonine and editamine). Many reported on some
preventive and curative role of Alstoniaboonei stem bark, in calcium mediated renal cortex mitochondria
damage [3][4]. Vasodilatory, causes a fall in arterial pressure leading to increase cardiac output
[5].
It was also
reported that Alstoniaboonie stem bark extract has anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and analgesic properties
[6],
this correlate with the traditional herbal medicine of the bark extract as a remedy for many pathological
condition such as malaria, diabetes, arthritis, antidote against insects and animal poisons
[5][7].
The potent
antioxidant activity of flavonoids, their ability to scavenge hydroxyl radicals, superoxide anions and lipid
peroxy radicals and the anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic activities may be the most important
functions of flavonoids, Alkaloids respectively, underlies many of the above actions in the body [8][9][10][11]..
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Collection of Plant Materials:
The plant material of Alstoneiboonei bark were collected in August – September 2012, at south of
Mambilla in Sardauna Local Government in Taraba State, Nigeria. The stem bark was identified at school of
Agriculture, Department of botany Federal University of Technology, Yola.

Collection of Experimental Animals:
Fifteen young male Wister strain albino rats were obtained fromVetenary Institute Vom, Jos. Plateau
State. They were maintained on animal feeds until they had grown to adult and attained weight between 105150kg.
Extraction of Alstoniaboonei:
The plant bark was dried at 600c in an air-circulated oven for 24hrs, ground with porcelain mortar
and pestle to fine particles and stored in screw-capped plastic containers prior to extraction.
Extraction Analysis:
Powdered sample (1000g) was mixed properly and covered tightly for 72hrs and filtered. The
residual was rinsed with 85% Methanol; the filtrate then concentrated to dry in a rotary evaporator and
subsequently reduced to constant dry weight over a low temperature water bath and waskept in the
desiccator until it was ready for used.
Serum Creatinine Assay:
The assay was done on addition of working reagent (creatinine reagent), components are thoroughly
mixed and transferred to cuvette using spectrophotometer (PYE UNICAM). The absorbance was read at
510nm wavelength at 20 and 80 seconds against reagent blank.
Enzymatic Urea Assay:
Using searchy method (1967), the enzymatic urea assay absorbance was read under 600nm
wavelength against blank.
Alkaloid Determination:
Alkaloid was determined by analyses of 0.1g of the Alstoneiboonei stem extract, boiled in 5ml of 20%
HCl acid on steam bath. The extract was filtered and the filtrate is subjected to various test, two drops of
Mayers reagent was added to 1ml portion of the extract, a creamy colour precipitate was observed.
To the Dragendoffs reagent (Bismuth potassium iodide solution), two drops to 1ml of the filtered,
orange precipitate was observed and to the picric acid solution (1%), two drops was added to 1ml filtrate
yellow precipitate confirms Alkaloid.
Experimental Grouping:
The Rats were divided into three groups (5 animals each) with an average of the same weight. Group

A was injected with cisplatin 5mg/kg/body weight intraperitoneally. Group B was Administered normal
saline 5mg/kg/body weight by gavages daily. Group C was injected cisplatin 5mg/kg/body weight
intraperitoneally followed by administration of Alstoniaboonei bark extract (1g/kg) by gavages daily.
Collection of Blood Sample:
Blood sample was collected by cardiac puncture after six days of treatment, the blood samples were
centrifuged and serums were used for the analysis.
Statistical Analysis:
Means were compared using student t-test and the level of significant difference was determined at
P<0.05

DISCUSSION
The phytochemical components (alkaloid, flavoids) were present in the methanolic extracts of the
bark of Alstoniaboonia plants, Alkaloids was found to be high in the methanol extract (mainly indole type,
Alstoniacillastonine and echitamine), followed by flavonoids
[2][12].
It is reported the medicinal properties of
extract for many pathological conditions such as malaria, diabetes, arthritis and painkiller, antidote against

insects’ Bites, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic activities [7].
The flavonoid was known to have anti-bacterial, vasodilatory and anti-inflammatory activity [13]. The
potent antioxidant activity of flavonoids underlines many of the above action of Alsttoniaboonei [9][10][11].
Intraperitoneal dose of cisplatin (5mg/kg) in this study agrees with chemotherapeutic levels known to induce
relatively mild acute renal failure [4][14]. From the study, the result of serum creatinine in cisplatin treated rats
(2.69±0.32mg/dl) and in rats injected with cisplatin and Alstoniaboonei bark extract (2.5±0.01mg/dl). Also
serum urea in cisplatin treated rats was (38.4±2.98mg/dl) and saline controls (24.94±3.76mg/dl) Cisplatininduced nephrotoxicity as reported by
[15][16],
has variously been associated with proximal tubular
impairment. Also the Ca2+ mediated renal cortex mitochondria damage
[4][14]
increased lipid peroxidation
[6].
Hence, the ability of Alstoniaboonei extracts to lower serum creatinine and Urea level may be related to its
therapeutic potential as a free radical scavenger. The anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic and Analgesic
properties shown to protect against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxiciy through free radical scavenging [6], it also
play a role of curative and preventive in Ca2+ mediated renal cortex metochondrial damage.
The reduced urea level in the cisplatin plus extracts treated rats compared to saline control may be
attributed to vasodilatory of afferent arteriole of a nephron increases the rate of blood flow into the
glumeralus and also increases the glomeular pressure and subsequently the glomerular filtration, it has been
reported to be effective in mechanism which involve, increasing cyclic nucleotide concentration,
phosphodiesterase inhibition and calcium antagonism [17]. Alstonaiboonei extract was used as tradition herbal
remedy for hypertension and this may be explained by the vasodilatory property of the extracts.
CONCLUSION
This study confirms that the Alstonaiboonei bark extracts can serve as a therapeutic potential source of
correcting renal insufficiency.
