Monemvasia is a small island town located off the southeastern coast of the Peloponnese in Greece. It was separated from the mainland by an earthquake in 475 AD and was founded by the Byzantines in the 6th century. The town has since been occupied by the Turks, Franks, and Venetians. Monemvasia contained many multi-level houses, squares, churches, wells, cisterns, stables, and stores. During times of war, people lived in the upper town, and during peace they lived in the lower town, which were connected by stairs and fortresses.
