Tenafly, New Jersey has changed significantly since its founding in 1776. Originally surrounded by forests with only four homes, a militia headquarters, and schoolhouse, it now covers 4.4 square miles with over 13,000 residents. Several landmarks illustrate its development, including the 1874 railroad station that became the downtown center, and the Clinton House built in the late 1800s to accommodate train passengers. Washington Street has been the business district since the early 1900s, and the Roosevelt Monument in a donated 28 acre park commemorates conservation.

9. Roosevelt Monument The Mackay Family, Malcom S. and his sister Jennie donated twenty-eight acres to the Tenafly Board of Education in 1924. They ordered the creation of the monument in honor to Teddy Roosevelt’s beliefs in conservation and parks.
