The pataka at Hokowhitu School was unveiled in 2005 and was carved by Craig Kawana to tell the history of the Hokowhitu area, including that it was once home to Māori tribes who fished and gathered here, warriors who left to go to war from ANZAC Park, and was later used as a training ground for soldiers during World War 2 before becoming a school.

- 3. This is the tipuna Aranaki
- 4. The tuna remind us that people came from all over to collect the fish from this area.
- 5. This reminds us that warriors left from ANZAC park to go to ancient wars.
- 6. Hokowhitu School was closed in the 1940s and used as a training area for soldiers going off to WW2.
- 7. The area was once harvested for timber.
- 8. There were lots of kereru to eat (but not now).
- 9. The European settlers brought Christianity to the area and people were called to church with a cow bell.
- 10. This was a big market garden area.
- 11. • We are very proud of our carving. • We show it to visitors to welcome them to the area. • You are welcome to come and visit it, too.
