SlideShare a Scribd company logo
The big 6 is a process model of how people of many different ages solve an information
problem.
It was developed by two people Mike Eisenberg ( Dean Emeritus and Professor at the Uni of
Washington Information school) and Bob Berkowitz ( School Library Media Specialist with the
Wayne Central School Distract in Ontario Centre NY).
It was developed in order to guide students through information problem – solving. As well as
this it provides a simple yet basic framework for teaching / promoting information Literacy. It
encourages teaching partnerships of both library media specialists and classroom teachers.

Task Definition
Determining what the problem is and specific information related to
the problem .
Information Seeking Strategies
Making decisions / selecting what is appropriate to the task that is
defined
Location and Access
Where the information strategy begins
Use of Information
Where students once they have located/ accessed a source and are
able to read, view, listen or interact with the information must then
decide what is valuable for the situation. They must extract
information needed by using things such as notes, copies, citations
etc…
Synthesis
Where the real learning takes place/ new information is brought in and
links made to pre-existing knowledge.
Evaluation
Determines how efficient and effective the information problem solving
was.
