Big 6 Research Model
Developed by Lindsay Skidmore & Lindsay
Lee
What is Big 6?
● Big 6 is a research model that was
developed by Mike Eisenburg and Robert
Berkowitz to help students improve problem
solving and decision making skills.
● In an effort to promote a uniform language
for research, DCS has adopted Big 6 &
Super 3 as a district-wide research model.

Step 1: Task Definition
● What am I expected to do?
● Do I understand what I need to do?
● What are the questions I need to
answer?
● What do I need to know about the
topic?
● What type of information do I need?
● How is it relevant to my life?
Big 6
Step 2: Information Seeking Strategies
● Where can you start to look for
information?
● Who can I talk to for information?
● What are the best sources to use?
● What types of information do I need?
(facts, opinions, pictures, primary
sources)
Big 6
Step 3: Location & Access
● Where can I find these resources?
● How do I search to get them?
● Where do I find the information in the
resources?
Big 6
Step 4: Use of Information
● What type of information did I find?
● Will the information answer the
questions I have?
● How do I write notes on the
information?
● Is the information reliable?
Big 6
Step 5: Synthesis
● How do I fit all the information
together?
● How do I write an outline of the
project?
● How do I present the information to
my teacher to answer the question?
● Did I remember to make notes of all
the sources for the bibliography?
Big 6
Step 6: Evaluation
● Did I solve the problem?
● Did I write the project in a format that
will be understood?
● Will I do anything different next time?
● What did I learn?
● Am I pleased with the project?
