Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Editor's Notes
What’s different this time around is the public cloud
The public cloud market has established a very aggressive and transparent benchmark for how IT should be delivered
This benchmark is as much about IT agility, efficiency, and time to value as it is about price
The pressure being placed on enterprise IT is heightened by this new standard of IT service delivery
There are no shortage of names and buzzwords applied to the movement to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of IT
Whether you call it Software Defined Data Center, Infrastructure 2.0, Cloud or IT as a Service, the desired outcomes are all the same
At SolidFire, we call this vision The Next Generation Data Center
The NGDC is a collection of resources and services that are agile, scalable, automated and predictable
These attributes define the core properties that IT must embrace to get out from under the pressure they face today
NGDC attributes are imposing changes across the IT requirements landscape
Rapidly evolving IT Infrastructure Consumption Continuum
Over next 5-10 years
Cloud Builders - SPs (Public) & Large Scale Enterprise (Private)
Cloud Consumers - Small & Medium Business, divisions of large enterprise
Regardless of the name, desired outcomes are all the same
There are no shortages of terms used to describe this transition. They all boil down to a set of attributes that enable organizations to deliver a widening range of IT and application services to internal and external users. These include;
Guaranteed Performance
Global Efficiency
Automated Management
Scale-out
Data Assurance
We call this the Next Generation Data Center
Changing the way IT is being deployed and consumed
Legacy Data Center Next Generation Data Center
Single Tenant Multi-tenant
Isolated workloads Mixed workloads
Dedicated Infrastructure Shared infrastructure
Scale-up Scale-out
Pre-provisioned capacity Capacity on demand
Hardware defined Software defined
Project Based Self service
Manual Administration Automation
So where does storage rank in this discussion?
Technically the storage market has not stood still
But rejuvenating disk-based designs with a flash induced performance boost is not the answer
Similarly emerging vendors building flash into what fundamentally amounts to the same architectures of the past is not enough
Designed with flash in mind
Higher internal system bandwidth than legacy arrays
Predictable high performance even as configurations scale
Garbage collection processes don’t impact IOPS and latencies
Endurance on par with enterprise storage arrays today
Data reduction w/o performance overhead
Withstand SPFs without loss of data or performance
Controllers, drives, power supplies, and fans should be hot pluggable
Firmware upgrades, expansion or reconfiguration w/o downtime
Support HA failover, enabling shared access to LUNs/volumes/virtual disks from separate hosts
Support space efficient snapshots, clones, and replication
“A very viable platform for dense workload consolidation”
...where the TCO advantages of flash storage solutions will become very evident
For this to happen…
The system must be able to deliver predictable performance on a per-application basis as a configuration scales
Each application must get the performance it needs no matter what else is going on within the array
Update - converged
3 products for the new flash world.
AFF for a complete storage solution that no portfolio company can match in a single product. The most agile and simple solution in your data center compared to HP, IBM and EMC offerings.
EF one of the fastest application accleration platforms on the planet. When you need it to go fast, EF is there.
SolidFire is there for new model data centers and new consumption models with scale out, QOS, automation and white box economics for service oriented architectures for *AAS architectures. SolidFire takes us where no other startup can go and into areas of the market that are growing rapidly. Very complimentary to our existing products and marketplace.
We bring SolidFire resources and market access to bring this solution to more data centers.
need E series on the right, storage grid on the left as cheap and deep and S3 target, AFF or SF in middle depending
Fast silos – individaul applications
SF = flash with predicatble performance and workload isolation
Node based – scale out architecture – share nothing – *** link back to problem slide ***
Webscale – autoscale storage - NextGen
Multi – real world use cases not just marketing – proves shared/mixed workload use cases
Rapid Response
Increase Productivity
Managing Real time (add and subtract)
Decouple of performance and capacity – managing as a resource pool
No end of life, end of sale phenomenon that has plagued this industry for years… don’t have to think about it
Speaker Notes
3Par has it…
Yes they have it
Diff = guarantee, 3Par = best effort
All bets off if disk fails, node fails etc…
To come close you need an 100% SSD platform
Why are you not guaranteeing Latency
It is about getting what you want out of the system = customer sat
Dialing in a satisfaction….
ESG Lab had previously validated SolidFire’s ability to deliver consistent, low-latency performance, even in common “noisy-neighbor” scenarios. ESG Lab estimates that by virtualizing and automating performance SolidFire could eliminate the need to deal with up to 93% of traditional storage related problems. These problems might include issues inherent in a traditional architecture that are caused by workload imbalance, monopolization of a fixed set of resources, insufficient resources in a pool, requirement to move VMs, inefficient tiering, and controller bottlenecks, for example. By leveraging the guaranteed performance made possible with QoS and automated load balancing, organizations would be able to consolidate a greater variety and volume of workloads onto a single all-flash SolidFire storage system. A traditional system could not guarantee the same level of performance, and administrators would expect to deal with that in two ways: 1) spending much of their time dealing with performance issues, and /or 2) spending the company’s financial resources to overprovisioning storage arrays in an attempt to increase performance.
I think the #1 bullet could be stated better… to say admins would expect to deal with the situation in 2 ways… one of which is to “spend more time dealing with it” seems kind of weak. Maybe better stated “spend more time analyzing and managing around storage performance issues.”
To deliver predictable and guaranteed storage performance, SolidFire leverages a technology called Performance Virtualization which virtualizes performance resources in very much the same manner that capacity is virtualized today.
Patented by SolidFire, this technology allows administrators to manage storage performance separately and independently from storage capacity.
With SolidFire IT managers have unprecedented control over their storage system, and are able to deliver predictable storage performance to thousands of applications within a shared infrastructure.
Because performance and capacity are managed independently, you can create small volumes with extremely high performance, and very large volumes with very low performance. This allows you to provide predictable storage performance to a very broad number of applications.
On the right is a view of how volume level performance is set within the SolidFire storage system
Settings can be established for Min, Max, and Burst ensuring that applications get exactly the performance they require

Floor space = key issue
Consolidate 4 racks of Vmax and pull it down to one floor tile
Power and cooling
Executed across entire Data Set
As system grows becomes more efficient, increses overall
Decreasing cost / gb
Doing more with less
Running test dev spin off right next to production
Takes up no space
Include the visual comparison slide and % to tell the floor tile reduction story
Driving cost parity and advantage over disk
What the efficiency values actually are… 5 – 10 efficency
