Characteristics of Bermudagrass
Bermudagrass has short, grey-green blades with rough edges. The flattened stems have a hint of purple. Two to
six spikes at the top of the stem cluster to form the seed heads.
Bermudagrass has a deep root system in order to penetrate soil in dry and arid environments. During drought,
the root system can grow to more than 2 meters deep. The grass grows both above ground and under it. It grows
roots wherever a node touches the ground, allowing it to form a dense turf.

3. Cultivation
Bermudagrass is commonly found in the southern US regions. It possesses the fastest growth rate
amongst the warm-season turfgrasses. The grass is an ideal choice for lawn grass because it is better
at withstanding daily foot traffic compared to other species.
For the best results, plant Bermudagrass in late spring. It requires frequent watering, especially
during the first few weeks. When the grass begins to sprout, watering can be reduced to twice per
day. Once your lawn is established, the grass can survive on regular watering twice per week.
Maintenance
Because of its fast growth rate, Bermuda grass requires more maintenance than other turfgrass. It
will also need to be fertilized every month, especially during peak growth.
Testing the soil pH before planting Bermuda grass is essential for healthy growth. The soil acidity in
which the grass grows is ideally between 5.8 and 7.0 pH, although the grass can tolerate a more
alkaline condition. In environments that have overly acidic soil composition, apply lime regularly to
keep the pH at optimal levels for nutrient absorption.
