Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by removing or expelling the fetus or embryo from the uterus before viability. There are two main types of abortion: induced abortions, which comprise over a third of all pregnancies worldwide, and spontaneous abortions (miscarriages). Methods of induced abortion include medical abortions using abortifacient drugs and surgical abortions using suction or manual vacuum aspiration. Psychological consequences of abortion may include guilt, sadness, hostility, insomnia, difficulty concentrating, and in rare cases suicide attempts. Physical risks include infection, hemorrhage, sterility, and other complications.
