In your organization, you frequently need to train others on how things are done. Whether it's for customers or new employees, there is information you know that they will benefit from.
Almost every organization offers some form of training or classes or seminars to employees (and sometimes to customers) but very few are succeeding in getting those “students” to learn. In this workshop, we will explore the use of technology and E-Learning environments to improve the actual knowledge transfer in your organization.
Much of today's learning can take place on-line in organized, downloadable segments and we'll show you the best way to create and deliver your important content using technology. We'll also discuss on-demand reference systems and the types of information that is best made available from a webpage or smartphone instead of asking people to memorize it. No more wasting time with on-the-job training or day-long classes that are not effective.
Here are some of the topics that will be covered:
• How to design courses so that learning really takes place
• What kinds of knowledge or information is best taught and what is best made available from a Wiki or other reference system?
• Tools for “recording” PowerPoint presentations (and other applications) so that others can learn on their own time
• The use of new media (video and audio) in your e-learning courseware
• Learning Management Systems and keeping track of learner’s progress

Lessons Learned: Canada’s Past, Present, and Future Leadership in Digital Acc...3Play Media
Canada is recognized as a global leader in digital accessibility, most recently with their introduction of the Accessible Canada Act. Like all countries, Canada has an imperfect history when it comes to accessibility and inclusivity, but what can others learn from Canada in how to operationalize an accessible ecosystem? How can other countries build inclusive practices into their culture and legislation?
On Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), join us as David Berman, an internationally recognized expert in inclusive design and strategic communications, discusses Canada’s history of leadership in accessibility, as well as predicting where the puck is heading regarding regulations and emerging standards that can benefit everyone within and beyond its borders.
David will share experience and insights that will help you leave no one behind online... while enjoying the “Accessibility Dividend” for all.
As Product Professionals we are told our job is to create products that either solve user problems or take advantage of opportunities. The challenge is that, during this time, this seems hard to find as new product innovations are being released every day. Are we running out of problems or opportunities? No, we have simply only been looking at the problem/opportunity from our usual viewpoint of the average user. What if we looked at it from a different lens? What if we look at people who always struggle with problems based on their environments not accommodating their unique needs? I argue, this is the gold mine of opportunity for creating innovative products. Solving the mismatches of people with disabilities will lead into innovations for your users and customers of all abilities! We will discuss the real-world examples of this, how to do it, and future market demand. We will all be disabled one day.

2023 State of Automatic Speech Recognition3Play Media
This session will discuss the findings from a 2023 research study of leading ASR engines to understand how speech AI measures up to the task of captioning and transcription without the intervention of a human editor. The study tested 549 files across nine industries, testing approximately 107 hours of content with a total of over 900,000 words.
Although Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is commonly heard of in higher education, most are implementing it at the level of individual interactions or think it's just another facet of accessibility efforts. During this session, we will build on the foundational knowledge of UDL to create expert-level UDL systems at our institutions. We will work together to develop observation and assessment techniques for UDL to create a foundation from which we can build.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

8. MEASURING ACCURACY
Formatted Error Rate (FER)
FER accounts for formatting errors like
capitalization, punctuation, and other
grammatical considerations, as well
as captioning requirements like
speaker IDs and sound effects.
Word Error Rate (WER)
“99% accurate captions” translates
to a WER of 1%, which means 1 in
every 100 words is incorrect. This is
the standard for recorded
captioning accuracy.
*Typically, this is the metric you see when
discussing caption accuracy.

How caption delivery works for live events
One platform: manage all services on the platform
CART Support: Live Professional Captions offer CART support, meaning that you can display live captions on a separate screen.
API Control: Schedule and manage live caption support via API, and caption events with any RTMP stream and over 30 different platforms. (no need to email anyone to schedule services!)
Viewer experience: multiple viewing options including second screen
Integration & APIs
Maybe throw in the stat: THE BEST ENGINES CAN ACHIEVE UP TO 93% ACCURACY …. FOR NON-SPECIALIZED CONTENT WITH GREAT AUDIO QUALITY (state comes from 3play’s state of asr)
Saves them time - understaffed
In stadium: In-stadium captioning not only creates a more accessible experience for students and fans; it’s also required by law.
Without in-stadium captioning, attendees who are deaf or hard of hearing may miss out on important information or feel excluded from the full experience of a live event, such as a graduation ceremony or sports game. Real time in-stadium captioning can also benefit people who aren’t native speakers of the language spoken in the stadium.
3Play Media’s real time captioning projects captioning to multiple caption boards, including Daktronics, Ross Video, and Samsung. In addition to jumbotrons, concourse monitors, encoders, and second screens, 3Play also delivers in-stadium captioning to personal devices.
Commencements: Graduation ceremonies are an opportunity for students to feel rewarded for their hard work. In order for families and students to enjoy a graduation ceremony to the fullest, they must be able to understand what’s being said throughout the commencement.
Providing live captions during hybrid graduations, both on the streaming platform and onscreen in person, creates a more engaging and accessible experience for all attendants.
MENTION: this is the standard captioning protocol for analog television.
We’re built to scale with your needs: whether you have one student or dozens who require real-time accommodations, you can be confident that no lecture is ever missed.
