the Spanish working
population works in
the tertiary sector.
3. The main trade relations of Spain are with UE members, although Spain has signed
trade agreements with other countries (Latin American and Arabic countries...).
The size of the countries represented on the map is related with the importance
of Spain’s exports.

6. The trade balance is negative, because imports are bigger than exports.
7. The balance of payments is positive, because of the incomes of tourism,
the foreign investments and the movements of capital, which compensate
the negative trade balance.

building and enlargement of

9. Road transport: roads have
improved, but this type of
transport shows problems:
high pollution, accidents,
traffic jams in some areas
(urban areas, entrances of
cities), due to the high density
of vehicles

10. Railway transport: big
investments have been done,
especially in high speed lines,
but local and regional trains
haven´t received the same
attention
11. Maritime transport: it is
used in foreign trade and
to transport passengers
between the Peninsula and
the Islands, Ceuta and
Melilla.
The main ports are Bilbao,
Vigo, Valencia, Barcelona,
Santa Cruz de Tenerife,
Alicante and Algeciras.
12. Air transport: small airports
have been built in touristic areas,
such as Girona, and the big
airports (Barajas, El Prat) have
been enlarged. Iberia, which
used to be a public company,
was privatized some years ago.
In the last years many low cost
companies have developed.

in Spain in the 60´s. Spain
became a touristic
destination for many
Europeans because of its
good climate and cheap
prices.

14. Tourism is one of Spain’s
most profitable economic
activities.
More tan 60 milion
tourists visited Spain in
2013 and left thousands
of millions of €.
15. Most of the foreign tourists come
from the United Kingdom, Germany,
France, Italy, U.S.A. and Portugal.
The favourite destinations are
Catalonia, the Canary Islands, the
Balearic Islands, Andalusia and the
Valencian Community.
16. Summer is the touristic season,
although out of season tourism is
increasing, especially with retired
people from all Europe.
Many retired people have settled
down in the Mediterranean,
attracted by the mild climate and
the reasonable prices with respect
to the ones in their countries.
17. The improvement of the
standards of living of
many Spaniards has also
developed national
tourism.
The development of
inland tourism is more
recent: cultural tourism,
rural tourism, adventure
sports, skiing in winter…
