GoodspeedA TEN YEAR PLAN
My name is Brad Goodspeed, I’m 16 years
old and am currently a student studying
Multimedia Journalism in college in the
hopes of pursuing a career in the radio
industry as a presenter. I went to ALNS
secondary school in Portsmouth and
completed my time there with 7 GCSEs to
show for it. I believe in complete equality
for everyone, meaning I dream of a world
where racism, sexism, homophobia and all other prejudices are
long gone. I believe that everyone should be a feminist and
mostly egalitarians, but I know this is still a long way to come
as most people have hate for someone else.
WHAT I’M ABOUT
I know the path to this job is a long, winding way with lots of
stop-off points for work experience, internships and temporary
jobs, but I hope that eventually I’ll be able to reach my dreams
by developing myself over the course of the years, and establish
myself as someone reliable with many connections in the media
industry. Eventually, I plan to move somewhere that has more
opportunities for me than Portsmouth; such as Brighton. I need
to become more in the public eye eventually and take more
work experience that involves this.
DREAM JOB ROLE: RADIO 1 PRESENTER
 Breakfast shows on radio 1 starts 6:30am, which means if I live nearby London or in London,
I’d need to wake up around 4:30 /5am.
 Being the voice of a radio station or programme
 Creating the tone and style of radio output and establishing a relationship with listeners
 have excellent presentation and performance skills
 be able to generate original ideas, and to think creatively about how to communicate them to
audiences
 understand how to use the voice ef fectively for radio
 be able to learn how to use a variety of recording equipment and to operate dif ferent radio
studios
 be able to present while operating studio controls and co-ordinating a range of simultaneous
technical activities
 be able to communicate knowledgeably and engagingly with audiences
 have excellent communication skills and be able to draw information from people
 be able to work calmly ef fectively under pressure, react quickly, and meet tight deadlines
 have knowledge of the law, ethics and industry regulations around radio production
 understand when it is necessary, and how to acquire, the relevant clearances and licences,
including copyright and music clearances
 understand the requirements of the relevant health and safety legislation and procedures
 have strong IT skills, including word processing and data handling - and, ideally, audio editing
and image manipulation sof tware
 have knowledge of the radio market, dif ferent station and programme styles, and audience
demographics
TASKS BEING A RADIO PRESENTER CONTAINS
Trevor Nelson, a DJ and Broadcaster on BBC radio 1Xtra, and
BBC radio 2. He says that in his experience, he’s been lucky;
people have offered him jobs in the industry and that’s how he
got this far in life. However, this isn’t often the case and people
have to establish themselves in order to make a successful
career for themselves.
CASE STUDY: TREVOR NELSON AND NICK
GRIMSHAW
 Strengths: I am a creative, open-minded, punctual individual who has a passion for
working in the media industry, especially radio. I am hard -working and I work well under
pressure without cracking. I have a great memory for certain things that I’m passionate
about. I try to approach a bad situation carefully and where stressful I ease peoples’
minds by using humour. I am also proficient in some photo -editing software. I am careful
about how I present myself to people image -wise, I take time to not look like I have any
negative connotations against me and look appealing to others. I am also interested in
photography and often take images for social media in my own time and am very good at
factual writing / writing copy.
 Weaknesses: I have a few confidence and anxiety issues but am working hard to deal
with them by putting myself in the public eye more just I am with my current job.
Distance seems to be the main factor standing between me and where I want to get in
life, hopefully I’ll be able to drive soon. I also tend to overthink things, expecting the
worst possible situation to be the most probable and ending up surprised when
something ends up turning out better than expected.
 Opportunities: There isn’t an abundance of opportunity where I live but I am trying to
look for whatever help I can. I am currently looking for work experience within radio,
especially Express FM in Portsmouth. However most of the other opportunities are
further afield and would require me to be able to drive.
 Threats: Sometimes my anxieties can get the better of me but this is rare. I am trying my
best to achieve as far as I can in this industry. Distance from certain opportunities are
the biggest factor in hindering me from achieving where I want to be.
 Predicted grades: DDM however I am working my hardest to achieve D*D*D*, or as close
as I can get.
SWOT ANALYSIS AND PREDICTED
GRADES
 Current point in 2016: currently in college studying multimedia
journalism in order to get a job in radio. I am looking for work
experience but anywhere that seems good appears too far away
and I can’t drive. I have a job working as a customer service
assistant in Argos waterlooville which is obviously quite far away
from where I want to be in life. I will keep applying for work
experience and if I actually get something in Express FM I will be
happy.
 Next year 2017: keep looking for more work experience, finish
college with grades around D*D*D*. Apply for a uni perhaps,
somewhere out of portsmouth with lots of opportunity such as
Brighton, or get a job within radio. Or do both??
 2018: get into uni and study radio to get connections and
perhaps a job that way or just get a job in radio and work your
way up taking opportunities as they come, will probably go to a
uni around London with lots of connections.
PLAN OF ACTION

Who to contact: David Harber
I believe doing work experience here would provide invaluable
skills for my progression through radio. I believe I would bring
fresh ideas to the table as the staff is mainly 20/30+ years old
and my views would appeal to a younger demographic. This would
also provide evidence to allow me passage into university. This
radio station plays mainly casual 80s-2010s music as that appeals
to a wider audience.
